Banks, retailers and merchants alike are having to rapidly adapt to a new payments landscape that is quickly being dominated by Fintech disruptors.
The payments, banking and financial sectors are currently undergoing a fast-tracked period of progress, defined by innovations and developments in technology and regulation.
In this ever-evolving reality, collaboration is the key to survival.
Over the last three years, the region’s commerce ecosystem has seen an abundance of investment, new business models and cutting-edge players emerge.
There has been a significant shift in what consumers expect from their shopping experience. Consumers don’t just want to find you online, they want to interact and transact in their own time and on their terms.
Retailers are being forced to adapt, grow and innovate like never before in order to meet the heightened expectations of today’s tech-savvy, cross-channel consumers.
Innovating is no longer a choice for retailers, it is a necessity to thrive in this new world of connected commerce.

AI 2017 saw several major banks in the region adopting chatbots for supporting customer interactions. In 2018, expect more chatbots to be deployed with improved quality of interactions, speed of responses, and accuracy in decision-making.
Machine Learning Banks in 2018 will start adopting new models powered by machine learning to deliver better offerings, insights into customer behaviour, expectations and responses. These insights will be gained by adopting big data tools and will enable banks to predict customer needs and meet them in a customised manner.
Digital-only banking and challenger banks This is hot, and millennials are demanding it. They want secure, streamlined, and wholly digitally-based banking solutions. When they can get a loan in 24 hours from a digital bank that takes a legacy bank weeks to approve, something has to change.

ICO’sIn the back end of 2017, Bitcoin reached a value of $11,000. It is no surprise that the rise of cryptocurrencies will continue in 2018, and there will be many more initial coin offerings. Given this trend, fintech startups have two options. They can enter the cryptocurrency industry themselves through an ICO of their own and raise funds with the help of blockchain; or they can “piggyback” on an existing successful cryptocurrency by developing systems and apps that allow customers to utilise that cryptocurrency in their transactions.
InclusionFintech innovation is quickly evolving in response to the needs of the underbanked. Fintech innovators are aware of the challenges and see the potential in pursuing financial inclusion. Not only does it provide a size-able market opportunity, but it also comes with the promise of creating a positive impact on people's lives. This has created the opportunity for real ecosystems to be built, and for real roadmaps to be collaboratively laid out.

Fintech will continue to disruptThe one thing we can say for certain is that fintech is here to stay and will continue to challenge traditional financial activity. 2018 will be just as critical a year in fintech as 2017 was. Consumers are increasingly open and demanding with respect to new banking innovations. And those forward-looking individuals and firms that can meet those demands will certainly get their market share.
CybersecurityData is the new oil and with so much data being generated every second, hackers are constantly devising ways to acquire it. Most cyber security measures until now have been reactive rather than preventive in nature. In 2018 banks will begin to adopt additional measures to ensure data security at all stages using a combination of encryption, OTPs, biometric authentication and more.

The rise of fast deliveryOver the last few years ecommerce delivery timescales have dramatically reduced. Customers are demanding multiple delivery options and ‘precise delivery.’
Encouraging loyalty in a disloyal marketplace Everyone is competing to create the perfect customer experience. The real winners when it comes to customer loyalty schemes will be those that capture information about their customers as they shop and utlilise it to the full.
Digital payments Gone are the days where consumers need to take their card out to make a purchase. With buy now buttons, biometric payments and online pins, transactions have become quicker, smoother and more secure than ever before.
