1 Introduction1.1 Notice• This manual provides all instructions on using the Event Log Explorer to acquire and save to a

personal computer (PC) all event data from a Dimension Fire Alarm Control Panel. The DimensionFire Alarm Control Panel can hold a maximum of 512 data log entries.

• The material and instructions covered in this document have been carefully checked for accuracyand are presumed to be correct. However, the manufacturer assumes no responsibility for inaccu-racies and reserves the right to modify and revise this document without notice.

This manual is not intended to be used as a fire detection system design guide. It isassumed that the user of this document is a suitably-qualified system engineer who isfamiliar with the relevant regulations.

• This manual should be read in conjunction with the following documents:

1. Dimension Fire Alarm Control Product Manual (996-147-X)

2. Dimension Fire Alarm Control Panel Operating Manual (996-148-X)

3. Dimension Reference Guide (996-149-X).

1.2 General• Event history log data information can be downloaded from the Dimension Fire Control Panel and

stored for easy access on any IBM-compatible PC conforming with the mimimum specification asdescribed in Section 1.3.1 Computers.

Before connecting a PC to the Dimension panel, refer to Section 1.3 Hardware Require-ments. Incorrect connections could result in damage to the comms port of the PC.

• The Event Log Explorer is compatible with Dimension fire control panel firmware V2.05 onwards.Dimension panels with firmware earlier than V2.05 will require an update to V2.05, or later.

• The Event Log Explorer is fully Year-2000 compliant.

1.3 Hardware Requirements1.3.1 Computers

• It is recommended that the Event Log Exporer runs on an IBM PC-AT compatible, Pentium-classPC, running under Windows® 98SE, NT 4.x, Me, 2000 or XP with 32MB of memory and withInternet Exporer 4, or later. The PC must be equipped with at least one serial port and one(prefarably) printer port. Laptops should have a pointing device installed. For optimum performanceit is recommended that the PC has, as a minimum, 32MB of free memory (RAM) and 10Mbyte freehard disk space. The PC should be configured for operation with a monitor resolution of at least640 x 480 pixels and 8-bit colour mode.

• If you experience problems, then contact Morley-IAS Fire Systems or your computer supplier.

1.3.2 Printers• The Event Log Explorer will allow you to print the data log files to any configured Windows® printer

connected to the serial, or parallel, port on your PC. There are no special printer drivers in thesoftware and the more sophisticated printers (e.g. some laser printers) may not operate as ex-pected. Consult Morley-IAS Fire Systems if you experience any difficulty.

1.3.3 Data Transfer Lead

• A Data Transfer Lead (795-080) is required to connect the the panel, at PL5, to a standard PCRS232 port (refer to Section 2.1 COM Port Setting).

1.4 Backing Up• When installing this program on a PC, follow the on-line installation procedure. Make back-up

copies of all event histories that have been downloaded. If your PC (or laptop) is not fitted with aCD/DVD burner the history log files created are small enough to be backed up on to a 3.5” floppydisk. To avoid inadvertant file deletion, it is always a good idea to create an archive folder on yourPC’s hard drive and keep copies of the files there.




2 Connecting the Dimension Panel to a PC• Before you can use the Event Log Explorer to download the event data from the Dimension Fire Alarm

Control Panel to a PC a connection must be made between the panel and PC as follows:

1. Use the Data Transfer lead (795-080) to connect the PC to the panel. Connection at the panel ismade at the four-pin plug connector ‘PL5’, which is located at the top-left corner of the base PCB(this connector is marked as ‘PC’ on the wiring connection guide diagram located on the frontface of the plate below this PCB).

2. The panel LCD displays a fault message when the Data Transfer Lead is connected. The generalFAULT and EARTH FAULT LEDs illuminate and the panel’s internal buzzer sounds. Press ‘MuteBuzzer’ to silence the internal buzzer.

3. Double-click the icon on your PC desktop to open the Event Log Explorer. Use the Event Log Explorerto send all event history data to your PC, where it can be saved on the PC’s hard drive and/or printedvia the PC’s printer. You are prompted to name the log file; it is suggested that you use a name thateasily identifies, for example, the location of the panel and the date that the history was uploaded. Thisshould be done especially if data from more than one site is to be collected for archiving purposes.

2.1 COM Port Setting• Before downloading any event history logs to your PC first you need to specify which communications

port (usually COM1 or COM5 for USB connection) you are connecting the data lead to on your PC.Leave the data speed as 57600 baud.

3 Starting the Program• With the Event Log Explorer program installed on your PC (see Sections 1.3 and 1.4 - it is not

possible to run the tool from the CD):

1. Either select Start\Programs\MorleyIAS\Event Log Explorer\Event Log Explorer.exe (or specify thepath in which the program is installed, if different) or double-click the Event Log Explorer icon onyour PC’s desktop.

2. The Event Log Explorer starts. The following window is displayed:




4 Getting Started• To use the ELE tool you first need to download the event history log from the Dimension fire alarm

control panel. Refer to Section 2 for details of connecting the Dimension panel to your PC and theDimension Product Manual for setting up the comms port to enable you to download the data.

4.1 Understanding the Tool Layout• Select the icon on your desktop or go to the Start menu icon to select the ELE download tool

application. The ELE download tool is displayed as follows:

The Event Log Explorer layout comprises thefour following parts:

a. The Menu and Tool bars

b. The Filter-by-date range selector

c. One large Download History button

d. Two event history data panes: Connec-tion View pane and Detail View pane.

• When the tool is opened no event history information is displayed until either:

a. An event history download is requested or

b. A previously-saved history file is opened.

• To download a panel’s historic log file see Section 4.2 Downloading an Event History.

• To open a previously-saved historic log file refer to Section 4.4 Opening a History File.

- Use to request a download of a panel’s event historylog file. Also press function key ‘F5’.

- Restore defaults - will collapse all expanded views ofevents and present a top level display. The ‘All’ tab willbe re-ordered in the Detail View pane to now be ontop.

- Use when exporting log file to different formats. SeeSection Section 4.1.2 Exporting Historic Log Files

- Print the event history log(s) to your PC’s printer.

- Selecting this allows you to specifiy which communica-tions port on your PC you are using.

4.1.1 Menu & Icon Tool Bars

• The following menu options are provided:

1. File - Open, Save As, Export and Print functions

2. View - lists all the log history view options available withthe Connection View and Detail View panes. Settings op-tion can be selected here also.

3. Action - Download History and Restore Defaults optionsare selectable.

4. Help - Select for the version number of the Event LogExplorer.




4.2 Downloading an Event History• With the PC connected to the control panel, download the event historic log by selecting one of the

following methods:

a. Select the ‘Download History’ option from the Action menu, or

b. Select the ‘Download History’ icon on the tool bar, or

c. Select the large ‘Download History’ button located below the tool bar, or

d. Press F5 on your PC keyboard.

• During the log download the following transfer progress window is displayed:

• Once the event history data has been downloaded from the panel, a list of all events (maximum of512) is displayed. This list can be filtered by selecting the ‘By Loop’, ‘By Zone’ or ‘By Event’ tabs inthe Connection View pane. Further filtering can be made using the ‘All’, ‘Fires’ or ‘Faults’ tabs in theDetail View pane.

• To stop the transfer of the event log data at any time select cancel. The cancellation window isdisplayed:

• Once the event log has been downloaded you can now save the file for printing or archiving.

4.3 To Save the History Log• To save the event history log file go to the ‘File’ menu and select ‘Save As...’ as shown below:

• Select the directory you wish to save the file to and name your file with something meaningful toaid future retrieval. In the example you will see some event history log files (with the file extension‘.ehl’) that have already been saved. You could use the date the log was downloaded in the filename or perhaps the name of the site or panel location. Having chosen the directory location andfile name, now select ‘Save’.

• The logged event data now appears in the Connection View pane. The data is displayed at the toplevel only, typically as indicated in the example below:

• You can see in the example on the previous page that 512 of logged entries have beendownloaded to the PC. This information is shown in the Connection View pane and broken downinto non-loop-based (referred to as ‘onboard’) events and loop-based events.

• The maximum number of event entries that the panel can log is 512. When the event history loghas reached the maximum of 512, newer events will replace the oldest events in the panel’shistoric log. The older log entries will have lower numeric values, i.e. log entry 1 is older than logentry 2. However, the total number of log entries cannot exceed a total of 512.

• After choosing the export format, select ‘Next’. You are now prompted to make other selectionsbefore you can export your data.

4.3.1 Exporting Historic Log Files

• Selecting the icon displays the following Export Wizard screen:

• Select the export file format; the availableformats are:

1. Text document (*.txt)

2. Hypertext markup language file (*.html)

3. Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet (*.xls)

4. Microsoft® Word document (*.doc)

5. Internet database file (*.xml)

6. Microsoft® Access Database file (*.mdb)

7. Microsoft® Windows clipboard data

8. Adobe® Acrobat document (*.pdf).

• File Origin - the default is ‘ANSI (Windows)’. ForMS-DOS applications select ASCII (MS_DOS).

• Selected records only - this function is notapplicable. The range is selectable in theConnection View pane.

• Include column titles - tick box if you requirecolumn titles. If selected you can choose whetherto include a blank row after field names or not.

• Blank if zero - selecting this option blanks allcells containing no data.

• The screen below shows the following ‘data origin’-related options:

• Specify the data origin and then press the ‘Next’ button. Press either to return to the first/previous screen. Press either to go to the last screen or to cancel exporting the file.

• If you chose to export as a *.txt file, or to your PC’s clipboard, you will be prompted to enter detailsabout text settings. First, select either the ‘Delimited’ or ‘Fixed Width’ option.

• Selecting ‘Delimited’ uses one of the followingto separate the event data fields:

None, Tab (default), Semicolon, Comma,Space or other Symbol (user specified).

• These characters can be used to separatethe data fields in your export file.

• Selecting ‘Fixed Width’ the export functiondefaults to ‘Space’ but this can be changed.

• Use the ‘Other symbol’ to enter an alternativekeyboard character (one character only).

• If required, select “ or ‘ text qualifier to encapsulate all text strings in the exported data file.




• After you have made your text settings or if you chose any other format, specify a path and file nameand select the ‘Execute’ button. You will be advised when the data has been exported successfully.

• Open the application to review and print the saved data file.

• If you try to export without first opening a log history, the following warning is displayed:

4.4 Opening a History File• Once the Event Log Explorer has been used to download one or more history log files, to open one

of these saved files proceed as follows (to save a historic log file see Section 4.3):

1. From the File menu select the Open option. Any saved history log files can be selected.The example below shows three log files, ‘log 001.ehl’, ‘log 002.ehl’ and ‘log 003.ehl’, with thefirst highlighted.

2. Select Open, or press Enter on your keboard, to open the file. Alternatively, to choose anotherhistoric log file select ‘Open’, or press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.

3. If, when opening a log file no list of files is displayed, browse other directories on your PC’shard drive until one or more files are listed.

4.5 Understanding the Historic Log4.5.1 Connection View Pane• Each historic log, when opened, displays all downloaded, event-related information filtered under

the following tabs:

: lists the number of loop-based, fire and fault events logged

: lists the number of all zone-based, fire and fault events logged

: lists the number of all fire, fault and panel control operation events.

• The Connection View pane works in the same way as the Windows® Explorer on your PC, in thatyou can expand any branch simply by clicking the name of the branch to see the related informationdisplayed in the Detail View pane. If you select the sign it will display the sub-directories (in thesame pane) as shown below. Similarly, selecting the sign will collapse that branch. Selecting the

sign or the sign will expand all sub-directories or collapse all sub-directories respectively.

• In the Connection View pane, select the ‘By Loop’, ‘By Zone’ or ‘By Event’ tab to display appropriatefiltered events in the Detail View pane. The events listed in the Detail View pane change as youselect different sub-directories in the Connection View pane. When the icon is selected theevents listed in the Detail View pane do not change when changing tabs. See Section 4.5.2 DetailView Pane for a description of the tabs and listed events.

• Three tabs are provided with the Connection View to allow quick filtering of event types in thehistory log. A brief description of these tabs is as follows:

1. Selecting the ‘By Loop’ tab enables filtering of the historic log using further filtering by selectingon the icons displayed below it.

2. Selecting the ‘By Zone’ tab you can display the events related to each zone. Further filtering ona zone-by-zone basis is also available.

3. Selecting the ‘By Event’ tab you can list all the events stored in the panel’s historic log by eachseparate category.

• Clicking the left mouse button on any expands the list of events for that category.

• A number of icons are used in the presentation of different types of event downloaded from thepanel’s historic log. In the example below the Onboard sub-directories the following icons are used:

1. The icon indicates that the events are related to the panel or to non-loop-devices.

2. The icon indicates the Onboard events.

3. The icon indicates a detection zone.

4. The icon identifies output devices, in this case sounder output circuits 1 and 2.

5. The icon identifies an Input/Output (I/O) unit.

6. The icon identifies an input module.

• Expanding the Onboard sub-directory, we can see, in this example, that there are three typesummary entries listed in the Connection View pane. Each type summary includes an iconwhich defines the log entry type.

• With reference to the example shown below, by expanding the Loop 1 summary a different event loghistory listing is displayed. This listing only includes events associated with devices on Loop 1. Asimilar type of listing could also be displayed if there are other working loops on the panel. The loopfilter selection introduces some different icons in this listing, and these are described as follows:

1. The icon indicates a fire or smoke detector. The address, type and status of the device is given.

2. The icon indicates a control module and the icon indicates an input module (not shownin the example listing below)

3. The icon is displayed when no meaningful data is available, for example when no devicewas found at an address on the loop when one should have been present.

Task bar: A description of the panel/device related to the selected event is displayed here.




• Using the right-hand button on the mouse, click anywhere within the Connection View Pane todisplay the context-sensitive menu as shown below:

• From this menu you can select:

1. Select All - Displays the complete list of event types in the Detail View pane no matter what tabis selected in the Connection View pane. However, the number of events listed in the DetailView depends upon the tab selected: All, Faults or Fires. See Section 4.5.2 Detail View Pane.

2. Expand All - This will show all event log sub-directories in the Connection View pane. The scrollbutton (A) now appears at the right-hand edge of this pane if this was not already displayed.

3. Collapse All - this command will hide every sub-directory, leaving only the top line in the Con-nection View pane.This action may hide the scroll button (A) - depends on the size of the pane.

4. Properties - select an item in the listing this option provides further information about that event,such as address, device type, device text, loop and zone numbers. An example is given below:

4.5.2 Detail View Pane

• The Detail View Pane lists historic log events based on the selection made in the Connection Viewpane. The Detail View pane enables selection of one of the following three categories:

: The pane lists all event types that are filtered by the tab selected in the ConnectionView Pane (see Section 4.5.1 Connection View Pane). If the Connection View right-hand mouse menu option ‘Select All’ is selected, this panel lists all event types.

: Lists only fault events for any selection made in the Connection View Pane.

: List only fire events for any selection made in the Connection View Pane.

Fire - filters only fire events in the historic log

Fault - filters only fault events in the historic log

All - lists all events in the historic log.




• The event information displayed in the bottom right-hand corner of the Event Log Explorer changesas the tabs are used to filter the history. Looking at the example below, the ‘All’ tab is selected andthe event listing can be seen in the Detail View pane. You can now explore the complete list of 512events (as confirmed by the ‘Viewing 512 of 512’) by using the slider bar (A) or simply by selectingan event and then use your PC keyboard’s Up and Down arrows.

• In the the right-hand example above the event history is filtered using the ‘Fire’ tab and the onlyFire event (in this particular event history file) is shown.

• Right-mouse button click on any listed event in the Detail View pane to see a full description of thatevent.

4.6 Filter Details by Event Range• It is possible to specify a date range when reviewing downloaded event history logs. This is useful

when you want to limit the review to a specific history period only.

• Tick the Filter Details by Date Range box (A). Use the ‘From’ date to select the start date of theperiod and the ‘To’ date to select the end date of the specified period. Click the mouse on the icon to display the interactive calendar (B):

• To change the year from that indicated on the calendar, select the year part of the calendar, e.g.2006, (C) to reveal a set of spin buttons (D) - see example below. Selecting the upper buttonincrements the year while selecting the lower button decrements the year.

• To select the month, use the the or spin buttons (E) to select earlier or later months respec-tively.

• To select the day, just click on the required date in the calendar; the calendar closes and nowdisplays the date selected in the ‘From’ date window.

• The procedure is the same for selecting the ‘To’ date.
