The Ringling is a center for art and history, situated on 66 acres of grounds and gardens along the shore of Sarasota Bay. It is built on the remarkable legacy of circus entrepreneur, collector of art, and financier John Ringling and his wife Mable.

The Ringling inspires visitors with an acclaimed collection of Old Master paintings, delights them with the story of the American circus, told through the first American circus museum and the world’s largest circus model, and transports them to the Roaring Twenties during a tour of the magnificent Ca’ d’Zan mansion.

The Ringling is also committed to exhibiting the work of an emerging community of living artists whose work moves beyond traditional practice and features dynamic and engaging contemporary visual and performing arts, including a diverse roster of theater, music, dance, and film.

SAMURAI: THE WAY OF THE WARRIORMUSEUM OF ARTJAN 15 – APR 17

Drawing from the rich and varied Japanese collection of the Museo Stibbert in Florence, Italy, this evocative exhibition features over 80 exquisite objects related to the legendary samurai warriors—full suits of armor, helmets, swords, sword-hilts, and saddles, as well as objects intended for more personal use such as lacquered writing boxes, incense trays, and foldable chairs that all characterize the period in which Japan was ruled by the samurai military class. This exhibition is organized by Contemporanea Progetti, Florence, Italy in collaboration with the Museo Stibbert. On left: Sword / Ko-wakizashi; Steel, iron, gold, silver, horn, wood, lacquer, stingray skin; First quarter of the 19th century; Blade: 33.4 cm; Grip: 11.3 cm, Museo Stibbert, Firenze.

INK, SILK AND GOLD: ISLAMIC ART FROM THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON

MUSEUM OF ARTFEB 5 – MAY 1

This exhibition features approximately 100 great works of Islamic art from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Never before presented in a dedicated exhibition, this collection covers virtually all aspects of Islamic art in almost all media, ranging from the eighth to the twenty-first century and from Spain to Indonesia. Through silver inlaid metalwork, Qur’an pages inscribed with gold, brocaded velvets, luster-painted ceramics and more, it offers a window into many different facets of the dynamic and complex artistic traditions of the Islamic world. More than 130 years after the MFA began collecting Islamic art, the objects presented in Ink, Silk and Gold are being comprehensively studied, restored, and presented to the public for the first time. This exhibition was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.Cover image: Mosque Lamp, early 1320s, Egypt (Cairo), Glass with gold and enamel decoration, 27.5 x 20 cm, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jackson Holmes. ROYAL TASTE: THE ART OF PRINCELY COURTS IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY CHINA

MUSEUM OF ARTTHROUGH JAN 10

Royal Taste offers a unique glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles and religious practices of princely courts in early- and mid-Ming China (1368-1644). Organized by The Ringling, this exhibition of more than 140 works of pictorial, sculptural, and decorative arts reveals some lesser-known aspects of palatial lives, religious patronage, and afterlife beliefs of Ming princes, whose world has long been a mystery. The quality of craftsmanship and beauty of design testifies to the richness and sophistication of the art and culture of the nobility in the provinces. This exhibition is organized by The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in association with the Hubei Provincial Museum, China.

GLITTERING GRANDEUR: SPECTACLES UNDER THE BIG TOP

CIRCUS MUSEUMTHROUGH FEB 29

While the classic circus performance is a rich spectacle in itself, in the late 19th and early 20th

centuries, show owners including P.T. Barnum and the Ringlings recognized that they had the ability to increase attendance by including a different kind of spectacle in their traveling shows. Circuses would frequently open with a large-scale theatrical performance that included hundreds of

performers engaged in scenes of battle and festivals of dance and song. These “spec” displays were created on such a grand scale that they frequently rated several different poster designs each season. See the illustrated extravagance of the spec in print.

Support for this exhibition was provided in part by Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax revenues. Additional support was provided in part by the E. Rhodes and Leona

B. Carpenter Foundation, the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation Endowment, and the Arthur F. and Ulla R. Searing Endowment.

CIRQUE/CYRK/CIRKUS: CIRCUS POSTERS ACROSS EUROPE

CIRCUS MUSEUMMAR 4 – JUN 20

Around the globe, some aspects of circus performance remain universal, while others take on a local

personality. Audiences are always thrilled by the high-flying feats of an aerialist, the danger of an exotic animal act, or the comedic antics of a clown. However, circuses also reflect the unique cultural climate of each region through the mediums of performances and advertising. This exhibition explores how 20th century circuses of Eastern and

Western Europe expressed their strong individual identities in print.

FILM + PERFORMANCE

UNSTRUCK Kate Weare Company

HISTORIC ASOLO THEATERFEB 12 & 13, 7:30 PM

For her third New Stages engagement, Weare delves deeper into her exploration of spontaneous movement with UNSTRUCK—a work created in collaboration with composer Curtis Macdonald. In an intimate trio of unceasing contact and energetic exchange, an ever-morphing sculpture of dance emerges wherein the dancers’ relation to their own bodies and the surrounding space is a sensual one; every gesture is alive to the environment and to all others who inhabit it.

I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING BETTER David Neumann/Advanced Beginner Group

HISTORIC ASOLO THEATERMAR 11 & 12, 7:30 PM

As Hurricane Sandy slammed into the eastern US, David Neumann’s father was dying. With the storm ascending the seaboard, his father sank deeper into dementia. To see beyond the surface of catastrophe and to understand what animates death, Neumann drew upon Einstein’s challenge to “look deep into nature and you will understand everything better.” The result is a “deftly strange and confident” (The New York Times) performance that blurs the roles of dying and caretaking, and in Neumann’s words, “walks the thin line between the purely presentational and the deeply personal.”

JAN 16 The Way of the ShogunDaphne Lange Rosenzweig, Ph.D., ISA CAPP; RCAD

The Edo Period (1615-1867) of Japan was dominated by a set of social and political codes reinforced by the shogunate family, the Tokugawa. This talk explores the culture of the shogun, samurai, and emperor, the development of Edo (now Tokyo), theater, religion and literature, the relationship between the Japanese government and foreign lands, and the major art forms developed during this period.

FEB 6 Ink, Silk and Gold: Medium and Meaning in Islamic ArtLaura Weinstein, Ananda Coomaraswamy Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art; MFA, Boston

Artworks such as a colored bowl, ornate tombstone, or handmade books are among the most tangible manifestations of Islamic culture. Because objects like these are most meaningful when put to use, exploring Islamic art requires considering what it might feel like to serve food in the bowl, carve the tombstone or create the manuscript. Curator Laura Weinstein will discuss how the material, out of which objects in the exhibition were made, offers a window into what it meant to make or use them, exploring what they can teach us about Islamic societies.

PROGRAMS

CONVERSATIONS $5 / Free for MembersJoin in the dialogue with this series presented by Ringling staff and invited experts. Less formal than a lecture presentation, Conversations are designed to be programs in which staff and guests can share research projects or topics of special interest.

CONVERSATION WITH CHARLOTTE PERRET

HISTORIC ASOLO THEATERJAN 29, 10:30 AM

Writer, educator, and arts patron Charlotte Perret shares the fascinating stories behind the creation of her book, At Their Doorstep—a historic and pictorial account of the itinerant street fairs that brought mass entertainment to the neighborhoods of early 20th-century Paris. While still residing in Paris in the early 1980s, Ms. Perret connected with the few surviving carnival folk who owned and operated these great game stands, carousels, and performance venues. It is from these first-hand interviews and hundreds of never-before-published photographs that she tells the story of a culture that has vanished.

CONVERSATION WITH A COLLECTOR

JOHNSON-BLALOCK EDUCATION CENTERFEB 4, 10:30 AM

Textile expert John Kreifeldt will share his collection and speak about decorative woven textiles of tribal people in the remote areas of Southeast Asia—the Iban people of Borneo. Used for festivals and coming-of-age rituals, the sophisticated cloths were believed to capture forces of the spirit world. Their jewel-like designs feature images from nature such as crocodiles and birds, creating powerful cloths that reflected the dreams and emotional life of their creators.

CONVERSATION WITH THE ART LIBRARY

JOHNSON-BLALOCK EDUCATION CENTERFEB 11, 10:30 AM

Scrolling Through TimeScholars consider the scroll one of the earliest forms of the book. The Romans, and then the rest of Europe, adopted the codex format of the book we use today. The scroll format remained the popular medium for painting and narrative throughout most of Asia. Join us for this program that will explore the development and use of the scroll with Asian art scholar Daphne Rosenzweig.

CONVERSATION ABOUT PAUL RUDOLPH

JOHNSON-BLALOCK EDUCATION CENTERMAR 8, 10:30 AM

Paul Rudolph is considered one of America’s most important architects. We are most fortunate that he chose to practice here in Sarasota and the surrounding community. Join us for this program that will focus on Rudolph’s legacy in Florida. The program will include a visit to the Walker Guest House Replica located on The Ringling grounds and a book signing event with architect and Rudolph scholar Joe King.

CONVERSATION WITH THE ART LIBRARY

JOHNSON-BLALOCK EDUCATION CENTERAPR 28, 10:30 AM

John Ringling’s library includes a number of beautifully-bound catalogues and volumes on the impressive collections of the British aristocracy. As was often the case during this period, entire art collections in England were sometimes offered for sale, providing John Ringling with the opportunity to add to his rapidly-growing set of acquisitions. The titles in John and Mable Ringling’s private library indicate a keen interest in the art that was housed in these country estates and offer insight into the collecting philosophy of our founder.
