Music Stream Center’s comprehensive private lessonprogram combines individual lessons with computer lab time,musicianship classes, MSC recitals, Music Teachers’ Associationconcertopportunities,andvariousauditions,competitions,masterclasses,specialawards,etc. TheSchoolyearrunsfromAug.28,2017throughAug.18,2018 with open enrollment throughout the year. Lessons arescheduled on a year-round basis; however, we reserve the rightnottoadheretoasetnumberoflessonspermonth.Studentswillgenerallyhavelessonsonaweeklybasiswith5weeksofscheduledbreaks:Thanksgiving,WinterVacation(2weeks),SpringBreakandtheweek of August before the following school year. MusicLabNationally, more and more teachers are reaping the
benefitsofhavingamusiclabtopromotetotalmusicalgrowth inconjunctionwith private lessons. TheMSCmusic lab is equippedwith a digital pianowith interfacingMIDI unit, 6 computerswithmorethan150musicsoftwareprograms,alisteningstation,andamusic library. Our lab assistants will help students use ourequipment to learn composition, improvisation, theory, musicappreciation,musichistory,rhythm,eartraining,andsight-readinginaself-pacedandfunway.
MusicianshipClasses¯ Musicianship classes consist of topics of music appreciation,
music history, composing, conducting, theory, ear training,improvisation, transposition, harmonization, performance,ensemble,sight-playing,singing,repertoire,musicdictation,andtechnique,etc.
¯ Students learn each subject through the benefit of groupteaching and games. The detailed content of each class willdependontheageandlevelofeachgroup.
¯ StudentoftheMonth:Eachteacherwillselectonestudentwhohasrecentlysurpassedexpectationsorachievedanoutstandingaccomplishment. This student will be recognized with acertificateatthenextrecital.
¯ 100 Day Club: This award is given to students who havecompletedourchartshowingtheyhavepracticedfor100days.Students can choose a special prize from the prize box whentheyturnintheirchart!
¯ CM Theory Cash Award:Given to students who score 95% oraboveontheCMtheorytest.
¯ Student of The Year: Each teacherwill select one student peryeartoreceivethisaward.
¯ Outstanding Performance Award: This prestigious award goesto those students who have participated in at least 4 recitalsthroughouttheyear,havepassedtheCMtest,andhavepassedtheNationalPianoGuildorequivalentaudition.
¯ Perfect Attendance Award: For those students (and parents)whohaven’trescheduledanylessonsfromSeptembertoJune.
¯ Excellence in Computer Lab and Theory: Our office and labmanager will select students to receive this award who haveexceededexpectationsduringtheirweeklylabtime.
¯ Parents of the Year: We appreciate those parents whodemonstrateateamapproachtoeducatingtheirchildinmusic.Yourextraeffortswillberecognizedattheyear-endrecitals.
Evaluations
¯ AllpianostudentsareencouragedtoparticipateintheNationalPianoGuild auditions. This provides a goal for the student andmeasuresthestudent’sprogress.Eachparticipatingstudentwillreceive a certificate with comments and a pin. Auditions takeplaceinAprilandMay,andareheldinDavis.Thefeeis$35-$75dependingonhowmanypiecesthestudentisperforming.
¯ All oboe, piano and string students are encouraged toparticipateinastudyprogramsponsoredbytheMusicTeachers’Association of California (MTAC) called the certificate ofMerit(CM).TheCMevaluationincludestechnicalskills,preparationofvaried literature for performance, sight-reading, ear training,and the study of theory and music history. Each student whopasses all phases will receive a certificate with comments andwilladvancetothenext level.Therearemanyhonorprogramsfor outstanding students. Please visit the MTAC website(www.MTAC.org)formoreinformation.TheCMtesttakesplaceeveryFebruaryorMarchand isheld inDavis.Thefee is$55to$90anddiffersbylevel.
¯ TheMSCannualGuitarEvaluationprovidesa“musicalcheck-up”under outside adjudicators, acknowledges progress andencourages students to continue their guitar studies. Studentswhoreceiveahighperformanceratingwillbeinvitedtoperformat the MSC Guitar Honor Recital. The students play against astandardofexcellenceintheevaluation,notagainsteachother.Thefeeis$40.
