Aces In The Postseason The Opening Tip- Evansville wrapped up its best season in 14 years, finishing 21-15 following a CIT semifinals loss at East Carolina- It marked the final game in the careers of Colt Ryan, Troy Taylor, Ned Cox, Lewis Jones, Andy Chinn and Brandon Williams- With the two tournament road games at the end of the season, the Aces were away from home for a span of seven out of eight days
Colt Sets The Record- Colt Ryan is the all-time leading scorer in University of Evansville program history; his 3-pointer with 1:56 remaining in the first half at Canisius gave him the mark- He passed Larry Humes, who set the mark in 1966 with 2,236 points- Ryan finished his career with 2,279 career points, tops for UE and 6th in Missouri Valley Conference history
Ryan In The UE Record Book- Since his arrival at UE in 2009, Colt Ryan has made his mark on the UE record book; below is where he finished his career in several career categories:- Scoring - #1 - 2,279 (6th in MVC history)- Steals - #1 - 183- Free Throws Made - #1 - 601 (4th in MVC history)- Field Goals - #2 - 708 - 3-Pointers - #2 - 262 (T-8th in MVC history)- Free Throw Percentage - #4 - 86.2%- Assists - #6 - 406- Scoring Average - #8 - 17.8
Strong Postseason Mark- CIT play in 2013 saw the Aces post a 3-1 mark; it was the first time UE has won more than one postseason game since taking the 1971 national championship- The championship season of 1971 was the last time UE has won more than one game in a postseason tournament as the Aces went a perfect 5-0 en route to their fifth NCAA College Division National Championship- Evansville also reached the magic 20-win mark for the first time in 14 years; the last time UE did so was in the 1998-99 campaign where they posted a 23-10 record
Three In A Row On The Road- With the win at Canisius on March 26, the Purple Aces won their third in a row on the road- It marked the first time UE has done so since grabbing wins at Wichita State, Missouri State and Indiana State in the 1998-99 campaign where UE went 23-10- The last 4-game road win streak also came that season as UE topped Morehead State, Drake, Creighton and Northern Iowa - In its last three true road games, UE topped Wright State before earning its first win at Wichita since 2001; that continued with the win at Canisius
7-1 Stretch- From the home game versus Illinois State through the Canisius game in the CIT, the Aces had their second 7-1 streak in five years- It is the second such streak in the Marty Simmons era as UE was 7-1 to open up the 2008-09 campaign- Shooting has been the primary difference in the streak as UE has outshot the opposition 47.2%-41.8% while also owning a 45.6%-32.1% edge from outside- Colt Ryan has averaged 25.8 points per game over that stretch while also contributing on defense with nine steals and 5.0 rebounds per game- The Aces have outscored the opposition by 9.3 points and own a +2.1 rebounding edge and a +2.4 lead in turnovers
Postseason Road Contests- On March 30 at ECU, UE played its 14th true postseason road game since 1975 and fell to 9-5 in those outings- In Division I play, UE is 1-2 on the road, they fell at Boise State two seasons ago in the CBI before picking up their first road win at Canisius - In the NCAA College Division, Evansville posted an impressive 8-3 mark in road tournament games
Putting Their Work In- Evansville played 36 contests in 2012-13, the most in program history- Prior to this season, the most games played in a season in program history was 33 in 1998-99 when UE went 23-10

Scoring In The 80’s- After notching just 50 points in the Arch Madness loss to Indiana State, Evansville averaged 84.7 points in the first three CIT games- It is just the second time UE has posted three games in a row over 80 points in the Coach Simmons era, the other time came in the 2010-11 season when the Aces notched 90 vs. Maryland Eastern Shores, 81 against Middle Tennessee State and wrapped it up with 87 versus Norfolk State
The CIT- 2013 marked the fifth annual CollegeInsider.com Tournament, which started in 2009- Past winners of the tournament include: East Carolina (2013), Mercer (2012), Santa Clara (2011), Missouri State (2010), Old Dominion (2009)- Evansville played in inaugural event in 2009, falling to Belmont in a home game at Roberts Stadium by a 92-76 final; the Bruins scored 49 in the first half before outscoring UE by a 43-41 margin in the second half to take the win- Other MVC teams who have played in the tournament include Bradley (2009 and 2013), Creighton (2010), Drake (2009 and 2012) Indiana State (2012), Missouri State (2010) and Northern Iowa (2011 and 2013)- UE was one of three MVC teams in this year’s tourney as UNI and Bradley have also accepted bids
Back In The Postseason- Since arriving at UE, Marty Simmons has led the Aces to four postseason berths in his six years including two appearances in the CIT- In seven career postseason games, Colt Ryan averaged an even 22.6 points per game, his high of 39 came against Canisius- Last year, the Aces participated in the CBI, taking on Princeton at the Ford Center; the Tigers came away with a 95-86 win, shooting 60% on its way to the win; UE was also stellar from the floor, hitting 59.6% of their shots
What A Half - Down by nine at the break against the Golden Griffins, the Purple Aces roared back thanks to one of their tops halves of basketball in over two years- UE shot 60% in the second half (18-of-30) en route to 56 points in the latter period; Ryan was responsible for 30 of those tallies- That is the most points in a half for Evansville since it notched 58 in the second half against Norfolk State on Dec. 23, 2010
Cracking Down Inside- In 2011-12, the Purple Aces finished the year being outrebounded by 5.2 caroms per game- Thanks to a great deal of effort on all ends, UE finished just -0.3 in that category this season- The 2011-12 season saw the opposition grab 1,095 boards while UE was held to just 927; on the offensive side, UE was on the wrong end of a 337-279 tally- Last season, Evansville turned the tables, holding a 378-343 edge on the offensive glass while down by just ten (1218-1208) in the overall rebounding battle
MVC Postseason Honors - Four players were named to various MVC postseason teams- Colt Ryan earned All-MVC First Team honors for the second year in a row; the only other Ace to be named to the list on two occasions was Marcus Wilson in 1998 and 1999- Ryan also became the third 2-time MVC Scholar Athlete of the Year while earning a berth on the Scholar Athlete Team- For the second year in a row, Troy Taylor earned a berth on the All-Defensive Team; he is just the third player in program history to make the list- A pair of freshmen earned All-Freshmen Team honors as D.J. Balentine and Egidijus Mockevicius took a spot on the 5-player list; they are the third Evansville duo to be named in the same year- Balentine was also named to the MVC All-Bench Team on March 6- Aside from the MVC honors, Colt Ryan was named to the NABC District 16 First Team along with earning a berth on the Lou Henson All-America Team; he also eanred a berth on the CollegeInsider.com All-Tournament Team

Tale of the Tape
Evansville and East Carolina meet for the third time in Saturday’s CIT Semifinal matchup. In a home-and-home series in 1998-99 and 1999-2000, the home team took each game. The first meet-ing in Greenville saw the Pirates take an 82-79 win before UE defended Roberts Stadium to the tune of a 68-63 win.
Of the 12 schools currently in Conference USA, Evansville has played six, including ECU. UE has posted a 6-15 mark against those schools with the most meetings coming against Marshall where the Aces are 4-5. Evansville and Tulsa met in the mid 1990’s as MVC foes where the Golden Hurricane won 6 out of 7 match-ups. The Aces are 0-1 against Rice, Southern Miss and Tulane.
More On Colt- He finished the season as the No. 2 scorer in the MVC and 15th in the nation with 20.1 points per game- Over the course of the final 25 games of the season, he registered double figures in 24 of those outings- Against Drake, Ryan surpassed the 2,000-point mark in style, recording a season-high 33 points; in the 25 games since facing Butler, he has posted an average of 23.4 points per game after struggling to begin the year as he averaged 12.4 points in the first 11 contests- In two games versus Drake this year, Ryan drained 30 out of 31 free throws; for the season, he shot a league-leading 89.3% from the line- A steady player on the defensive end, Ryan will leave UE with the most steals in school history; he continues to add to his total, which stands at 182; Reed Jackson was the previous record holder with 150- Ryan is back at 100% following a hip pointer and led the MVC in conference minutes played with 37.4 per game; that was 1.7 minutes more than anyone else in the league averaged
Free Throw List- Aside from his other accolades, Colt Ryan finished No. 1 in UE history with 601 free throws made, he passed Matt Webster for top honors; Webster finished his career with 533- Ryan also made his mark on the MVC record book as his total of 601 put him fourth all-time- His 9-for-12 outing against Illinois State helped him jump four spots on the list, most notably passing Larry Bird’s tally of 542 set in his career at Indiana State, which spanned from 1976-79
Doing It All- Troy Taylor has the ability to affect the game on all ends of the floor as he led the Aces in rebounding and assists while posting the second-leading total of steals- Taylor’s play was pivotal against Canisius as he registered 10 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals- The point guard averaged 7.5 rebounds in the Valley outings, fourth in the league tally; he led the Aces in rebounding in 11 out of 18 league games this season and while hauling in at least five in all but two league contests, in UE’s Arch Madness outing, Taylor led all players with 10 caroms- Aside from his performance on the boards, Taylor cranked it up offensively, posting double-digit outings 10 times overall in his senior season, he began the year with just 8 double figure outings in his UE career- A perfect 7-for-7 performance vs. EKU gave Taylor a career-best 16 points; he came close to his second triple-double, tallying 7 rebounds and 7 assists- He led the way for Evansville with 10 boards against Indiana State; over the last two years, he has led UE in rebounding on 31 occasions, more than anyone else
Call Him “Triple T”- Troy Taylor recorded 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on his way to just the second triple-double in UE history versus Creighton; it marked the 36th triple-double in MVC history and the second in as many seasons as Jake Odum of Indiana State had one a year ago- The only other time it happened in program history was when Reed Jackson did so vs. New Hampshire on Jan. 3, 1995; he finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists- While it is hard to go up from having a triple-double, Troy Taylor gave it his best shot on January 5 versus Missouri State as he finished with 19 boards; it marked the first time a UE player grabbed 15 or more since Nate Garner did so vs. Western Kentucky on 12/13/08

Quick Facts Nelson Stepping Up- Through UE’s first 29 games of the season, sophomore Jordan Nelson tallied just 26 points while six 3-pointers- In the last seven games, he has made a full 180, nearly matching his output in the first part of the season as he has posted 34 points over that span; he has been almost automatic from long range, knocking down 7 out of 10 treys - His five points at Wichita State may have been the most important five as they ended scoreless droughts while helping the Aces to the win- Against Indiana State, all 11 of Nelson’s points came in the first half as he helped the Aces to the halftime lead and the win; the 11 tallies marked a career high
Dishing It Out- Evansville was one of the most unselfish teams out there; led by Colt Ryan’s 4.0 assists, the Aces ranked 15th in the nation, averaging 15.9 per game- For the season, UE had assists on 64% of its field goals, 11th in the country- Colt Ryan has also averaged 4.0 assists per game and finished 4th in the league with his total; he was the only player in the MVC to rank in the top six for points (2nd), assists and steals (6th)
Back In Form- D.J. Balentine found his stroke at the end of the season, resulting in berths on the MVC All-Freshman Team and the All-Bench squad- Balentine got back on track with 18 points and Wright State, from that point on, he posted 9.3 points per contest, second on the squad behind only Colt Ryan- Balentine was sharp over that span, draining 42.6% of his shots, including 14 out of 32 treys (43.8%); that was a sharp improvement over his numbers in the first 16 MVC games as he posted just 5.4 PPG while shooting just 29.9% (32-107) overall and 24.6% (14-57) from 3-point range- In the win at Wright State, he found the bottom of the rim seven times, including four 3’s en route to 18 points- With his average of 15 PPG in the games against Miami and Murray State, Balentine garnered MVC Newcomer of the Week honors on Dec. 10; it was the first honor for a UE player this season- His 26-point outing against Colorado State was the top effort by a freshman since Colt Ryan notched 31 at Creighton in his freshman campaign of 2009-10. It still marks the top scoring output for a UE player this season
Wing Making Impact In Starting Lineup- One of the special stories for UE over the last ten games of the season was the play of Adam Wing, who started each of those contests- Prior to making his first start, Wing had not played more than 20 minutes in a game, however, in the games following, he played at least 23 minutes in eight of those contests while averaging 4.0 boards- Through the first 26 games of the year, Wing hauled in just 41 rebounds, he registered 40 in the ten games after- Wing saw 214 minutes of action (10.7/gm) in the first 26 games for UE, but the last ten have seen him on the floor for 253 minutes (25.3/gm)- After a 10-point, 7-rebound effort versus Creighton, Wing came back with a career-high 35 minutes of play against Illinois State and has set a career ark with 8 rebounds in the games at Wright State and Wichita State- Just as important as his efforts on the stat sheet was the fact that he has been called for just 11 fouls in his last 224 minutes of action; entering the Illinois State game at the Ford Center, Wing averaged 6.3 fouls per 40 minutes of play
Defending The Ford Center- In just its second season, the Ford Center has proven to be a tough place for the opposition to play; last season, UE was 11-7 at home before winning 15 of its 18 home contests this season
Saving His Best For Last- Ned Cox put the perfect finishing touch on a solid career at UE- Despite suffering a slight injury at Wright State, Cox has still managed to put together his top season, notching a total of 379 points, besting his total of 293 a season - The San Antonio, Texas native has scored at least eight points in all but seven games, four of those coming since his injury- Prior to suffering injury against the Raiders, Cox was on fire, hitting 16 points in three of the prior four games- His offensive output as a senior helped him rocket up the all-time scoring list as his final total of 1,115 put him in 32nd overall- Since the beginning of last season, Cox has been one of the top free throw shooters in the league as he has hit 97 out of 113 attempts, including 52 out of 62 as a senior- Cox did an excellent job of taking care of the ball while finding his teammates for open baskets; Cox finished the year with 106 assists against 42 turnovers, good for an assist/turnover ratio 2.5 (2nd overall in the MVC); in league play, his ratio of 3.4 was tops amongst all league players

Evansville Stat Rankings (FINAL)Getting Better By The Day- Through the first 19 games of the season, Egidijus Mockevicius played 20 minutes or more on just four occasions, since the home game versus Bradley, he got his chance to play more minutes and responded in a big way - Mockevicius saw 20 minutes of action or more in 10 of those 17 games while playing 36 minutes on two occasions; after posting 16.6 minutes and 3.7 rebounds through the first 19 games of the seasons, the frosh played 20.4 minutes while hauling in 6.5 rebounds per game in the 17 games after- The No. 2 shot blocker in the MVC (and No. 1 in league play) posted a career-high of six in homes games against UNI and Drake; his total of 64 on the season was the most since Sascha Hupmann had 74 blocks in the 1991-92 season, Hupmann’s mark came six months prior to Mockevicius being born in September of 1992- His top offensive outing of the year came against Missouri State where he finished with a game-high 18 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting effort; he also connected on six of his nine free throw attempts- Mockevicius was the top shot-blocking freshman in the Valley
It ’s Tough On The Road- Since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, the Purple Aces are 24-102 in MVC road games; in their first five years in the league, UE was 21-24 in road games, making for a grand total of 45-126 in Valley games away from home since the 1994-95 campaign- Evansville has had just one season over .500 away from home in league play and has not won more than three league road games since the 1998-99 season- This season, two big difference come in turnover margin and rebounding; in home league games, UE was +2.0 on the boards while forcing 4.8 more turnovers; that was a different story on the road as they were outrebounded by 4.7 per game while the turnover margin was a bit lower at +1.2
MVC Wins vs. Losses-Defense has been the key for UE when pitting its wins versus its losses in MVC play this season- through ten victories, UE’s defense has allowed opponents to shoot 42.3% overall and 32.7% from 3-point range; in the eight league losses, the opposition has shot 47.8%, including a 43.1% from long range- UE’s shooting from outside is also a determining factor as its wins have seen 38.6% of its treys go in while the losses have seen UE shoot 32.8% beyond the arc
Strong At The Line- Evansville hit 70% of its attempts or more in 14 out of 18 league games, including seven efforts over 80% - Those performances from the line have been pivotal all season, especially late in games as Evansville has won 16 out of 17 games when it has been ahead with five minutes remaining - UE also outperformed its opponents in MVC games as the opposition has hit 70.8% of its free throws while Evansville has hit 76.6% of its attempts- Following a 6-12 performance at Colorado State, the Aces team percentage stood at 66.3%, however, after that, Evansville hit 420 out of 557 attempts, 75.4%- Last season, UE was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the land, hitting 76.4% of its attempts
Taking A New Role- One of the unsung heroes of the Aces’ late season streak was Lewis Jones- In the nine games prior to coming off of the bench, Jones shot just 35% (21-60), but in the nine games following, he hit an accurate 42.5% of his shots as 21 out of his 49 field goals were good- At Wright State, Jones had one of his best games in recent weeks as he shot an efficient 5-of-7 to register 10 points and four rebounds- UE’s performance from the line has gotten better as the season has gone along and Jones has been a large part of that; through the first nine games, Jones was just 10-of-23 on his free throw attempts, but he has turned that around, hitting 41 of his last 57 attempts- In the CIT win over Eastern Kentucky, Jones set a career mark, pulling in nine rebounds
Near The Top- Evansville ranked near the top of the nation in several statistical categories thanks to its unselfish play- With an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.457, UE was 6th in the nation; UE also turned the ball over an average of just 10.9 times per game, which ranked them 26th overall- Taking care of the ball was one of the strengths for the Aces, they turned the ball over on just 16.2% of their possessions; the national average for that statistic was 19.3%- As a team, the Aces averaged just 10.9 turnovers per contest; that was 2.2 below the national average of 13.1

Aces vs. Ranked OpponentsOvertime Success- Overtime has been kind to the Aces this season as they are a perfect 3-0 in the extra period this year- UE overcame a late 7-point deficit to send the home game vs. UNI to the extra period; Ned Cox hit the game-tying three with 30 seconds left in regulation; against Drake, it was Colt Ryan whose late trey sent the game into the extra session- The 54 points scored in the OT win were the least UE has posted in an overtime triumph since defeating Eastern Kentucky by a 47-44 final in the 1945-46 campaign
Success Continues Against Ranked Squads- For the first time in program history, Evansville has defeated a ranked opponent four seasons in a row- Coach Simmons has led UE 4-6 mark in the last 10 games versus a ranked team; that is the top 10-game stretch in program history- The Aces have won three home games against ranked teams, dating back to the win over UNI in 2011; Simmons is 3-2 in home contests vs. ranked teams
Moore A Force Down Low- Jaylon Moore has enjoyed playing against the Alabama schools this year, notching ten points in games against Alabama A&M and Alabama State- Through 36 games in 2012, Moore scored 123 points; he registered 30 all of last season
Telling Numbers- Rebounding was a telling stat when looking at the win/loss results for UE; when the Aces won or tied in rebounding, they were 15-4, when they were on the losing end of that stat, they finished 6-11- In its wins, the Aces hold a +3.0 edge on the boards, however, in the losses, the opposition is outrebounding UE by 4.9 per game- Shooting also affected the outcome; Evansville held a .472-.426 shooting edge in its wins while the losses saw opponents outshoot UE by a .480-.392 margin- Evansville won 11 opening tips last season, going 9-2 when gaining the first possession- The status of the game with five minutes remaining had a direct impact on the final results; the Aces were 16-1 when holding a lead at the 35-minute mark, but came back from a deficit at that point just five times, going 5-14 when trailing with five minutes remaining; UE and Wichita State were tied in the 1/13 matchup as UE pulled out the win in Evansville- Since the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign, UE has had 17 games where four or more players have reached double figures in scoring; the Aces were 9-2 when doing that last season and are 5-2 thus far in 2012-13
Congratulations Are In Order- A sincere congratulations go out to former Ace Scott Haffner who was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2013 class; the Noblesville, Ind. native led his high school to an undefeated season in 1984 before coming to UE in 1987; he set the UE record with 65 points versus Dayton- Others in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame with ties to UE include: Shelly Brand Adlard, Don Buse, Gus Doerner, Robert Hoffman, Larry Humes, Bryan Jerrel, Arad McCutchan, Kern McGlothlin, Clarence Riggs, Walter Riggs, Bill Robertson, Bob Sakel and Steve Welmer
Welcome To UE- On November 19, head coach Marty Simmons announced that three players have signed to play in 2012-13, including Jaylon Brown, Duane Gibson and his son; Blake Simmons- A 5-11 guard, Jaylon Brown will attend UE after finishing out his high school career at Fishers (Ind.) High School. Brown led Fishers with 13.2 points and 2.8 assists last season and was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com.- Duane Gibson, a 6-3, 190 guard, is a native of Cleveland, Ohio and played his high school career at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High. His alma mater is a hotbed in sports as basketball players Clark Kellogg and Kevin Edwards attended as well as football players Mike Golic, Elvic Grbac and Desmond Howard. In his junior campaign, Gibson averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds and he was named to the Preseason All-Ohio First Team.- Blake Simmons, son of head coach Marty Simmons, will come to UE from just down the road in Newburgh, Ind. where he played at Castle High School. The 6-5 guard averaged 19.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season while shooting 41% from three-point range. Simmons led the Knights to a 20-5 record in 2011-12 along with its second Class 4A semistate appearance. He was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association All-State First Team a season ago.

2012-13 PURPLE ACES gAME NOTES
2012-13 UNIVERSITy OF EVANSVILLE MEN’S BASKETBALL 11
Previous NotesBack At The PAC- Evansville is 2-0 on the west side of town following the 86-72 win over EKU; in 2011, the Aces also called the PAC home in game one of the College Basketball Invitational- Hofstra was the opponent as Evansville ended a six-game postseason losing streak to earn a 77-70 win over the Pride; prior to that game, the last postseason win came in the NCAA Tournament over Oregon State in 1989- That contest saw four Aces register double figures, led by Colt Ryan’s 21; UE and Hofstra each hit 50.9% of their shots (27-53)
Team of the Week- Following a 3-game win streak with victories over Illinois State, a BracketBusters victory at Wright State and an impressive road win at Wichita will make national news and EPSN honored the Aces as the “Team of the Week” in Myron Medcalf’s Mid-Major Report on Feb. 28- The finale win over Indiana State marked the 18th win of the season for UE, the most in Coach Simmons tenure at UE, surpassing the 17-14 mark in 2008-09
Four-Game Win Streak- With its four-game win streak to end the regular season, Evansville finished with its first 18-win season under Coach Simmons and its first since going 18-12 in the 1999-00 season- The last time UE finished the regular season on such a streak was in the 1992-93 campaign when the Aces reeled off wins against Dayton, Butler, Detroit Mercy and Loyola- They rode the momentum to three more wins in the MCC Tournament on their way to a berth in the NCAA’s where they faced Florida State
10 Wins In The Valley- For just the fourth time since entering the league, Evansville won 10 league games- The Aces were 11-7 in 1994-95 and 1996-97 while going 13-5 to win the regular season championship in 1998-99- The championship season was the last time prior to 2013 that UE won ten league contests
Win In Wichita- Evansville ended a few streaks with a 59-56 triumph in Wichita on Feb. 27- It marked the first win for the Aces at Koch Arena since Feb. 6, 2001 when they picked up another 3-point win, taking down the Shockers by a final of 77-74- That season also marked the last time Evansville swept the season series from Wichita State
BracketBuster History- The game at Wright State marked the tenth and final
appearance in the BracketBusters series for Evansville; UE was an even 5-5 in the series- Below are the all-time results from UE’s BracketBuster history.
2013 - at Wright State - W, 70-582012 – vs. Western Illinois – W, 68-452011 – at Murray State – L, 72-472010 – vs. UIC – L, 82-802009 – vs. Miami (OH) – W, 75-612008 – at Eastern Illinois - W, 63-552007 – at Samford – W, 69-652006 – vs. UT-Martin – L, 69-622005 – vs. Loyola – L, 68-642004 – at Central Michigan – L, 90-73
Teaming Up On The Boards- Egidijus Mockevicius and Troy Taylor combined to grab 25 rebounds in the win over UNI; Mockevicius set his career mark with 13 boards (8 on the offensive end) while Taylor recorded 12- It marked the first time two Aces have recorded 10 or more rebounds in the same game since Taylor and James Haarsma each finished with 12 in a 76-46 win over SIU Edwardsville on Nov. 18, 2009; in the 2008-09 campaign, UE had three games in which teammates hauled in ten boards apiece

2012-13 PURPLE ACES gAME NOTES
2012-13 UNIVERSITy OF EVANSVILLE MEN’S BASKETBALL 12
Senior Achievement- In the 1/5 victory over Southern Illinois, all four senior starters (Ned Cox, Lewis Jones, Colt Ryan and Troy Taylor) scored in double figures; it marked the first time in their careers that each finished a game with 10 or more tallies
Winging It- Relentless effort in practice resulted in freshman Adam Wing seeing a career-high 17 minutes of action against Miami- That effort paid off as the Morehead, Ky. product his 4-of-5 shots while finishing with a career-best 9 points to go along with 5 rebounds and a blocked shot- In the contest at Creighton, Wing hit 3-of-4 shots to finish with six points in 14 minutes of play
Sawvell Back In Form- Prior to the game at Creighton, sophomore Ryan Sawvell rode the top scoring streak of his career as he has notched a total of 37 points in the three games before the trip to Omaha- The Mundelein, Ill. product has used an efficient scoring touch over that three-game span, (16-of-21) to hit 76.2% of his attempts; he has also averaged 6 rebounds- Over a stretch of six games prior to facing Alabama State, Sawvell tallied a total of ten points prior to his recent streak- That streak was the second time in his career that he notched 10+ points in three consecutive contests
Hitting The Century Mark- Tuesday’s 103-69 win over Oakland City marked the first time the Aces have hit the 100-point plateau since a Nov. 19 game versus Central Michigan in 2004- The game marked the 103rd time in program history that UE eclipsed that mark and just the third time since the season opener of the 1995-96 season- That total marked the top scoring output since Marty Simmons became head coach and was a Ford Center record
Two In A Row- Fans have been treated to some great games at the Ford Center as UE topped Alabama A&M by a 72-46 final before grabbing a 94-68 win over Miami in early December- Back-to-back wins by 25 points or more at home have been hard to come by; the last time UE did so was in 2009-10 with wins over Oakland City and SIU Edwardsville to begin the year; the last time the Aces won by that margin over two Division I opponents came in the 1999-00 season as UE took down Morehead State, 78-48, before downing Charleston Southern in its next home contests by a score of 96-67- Evansville posted 94 points in the win over Miami; the last time the Aces put up that many points at home was in the 2004-05 season opener as UE topped Central Michigan by a 100-85 final
Presence Down Low - Ryan Sawvell posted another solid effort as he grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds at TTU; it was the second time he led the Aces in rebounding this season- Sawvell had a blue collar effort at Notre Dame, especially on the defensive end. In what UND center Jack Cooley called “a Big East game”, Sawvell limited Cooley to just seven shots on the day. He got the job done on both ends of the floor, tallying 11 boards and ten points. - Sawvell registered the third double figure rebounds effort of his career and the second double-double. His first double-double came at Bradley last season when he notched 12 points and 16 rebounds; he posted another 10-point performance to lead UE to a 66-56 win over Yale
Boarding It Up- Through the first four games of the 2012-13 campaign, UE found itself being outrebounded by an average of 10 per game; that all changed in the wins over Tennessee Tech and Alabama A&M as the Aces were on the better end of the final tally, finishing with an average of 8 more rebounds than the opposition- Last season, Evansville had just one two-game streak of outrebounding its opponents, doing so against Bradley and Illinois State
Defensive Streak - Evansville’s defense turned it up in a November 3-game win streak, holding WIU, TTU and AAMU to just 46.7 PPG while holding WIU and TTU to under 20 points in a half (AAMU had 21 in the first half ); large runs have been key in those contests; in the win over WIU, the Aces held the Leathernecks scoreless over a span of 8:28 in the second half, forcing them to miss all five shots along with eight turnovers; a similar run in the first half at Tennessee Tech saw UE go on a 20-2 run while holding the Golden Eagles to 1-11 shooting over that span; the defense was at it again versus the Bulldogs, in the first half, the Aces went on a 22-3 run while holding AAMU without a field goal over the span of 8:55

Evansville’s Record When.... - UE has held those three opponents to 50 or fewer points; by comparison, Evansville held just one team to under 50 last season as Western Illinois mustered up 45 points in a Feb. 18 meeting; this year the Leathernecks scored just 44 points versus UE, the fewest point an opponent has scored since Oakland City had 42 in the 2010-11 season opener- The last time the Aces held three opponents in a row under 50 points as UE held Cleveland State, Buffalo and SEMO to 49, 44 and 45 points, respectively, early in the 2006-07 season.
Coaches vs. Cancer Classic - Evansville is proud to be associated with the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic for the first time. The tournament began in 1995 and 1996 in a showcase format before becoming a tournament in 1997 with Princeton winning the inaugural event. Since its inception, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised almost $85 million to support the fight against cancer. The first four games of this season were a part of the tournament as UE fell at Notre Dame before winning two out of three contests at the Ford Center. Evansville fell to Buffalo before rallying to defeat Yale and Western Illinois.- WIU failed to hit a three-pointer in the Nov. 17 contest, the first time UE had not allowed a trey since Bradley failed to hit one against UE on Feb. 17, 1999- After suffering a hip pointer in the loss to Buffalo, Colt Ryan saw just ten minutes of action in the three-game tournament at the Ford Center; despite the loss, Evansville rallied to pick up victories over Yale and Western Illinois
Preseason Poll - For the second-straight year, the University of Evansville was picked to finish fifth in the Valley. Last season, UE surpassed the pick, taking the third seed for the 2012 MVC Tournament and the Aces seem poised to repeat that feat this year as they return four seniors who will be the core of UE’s squad.
Looking Towards The Future- It was recently announced that freshman David Howard will redshirt this season. That will give him the opportunity to work ahead and learn UE’s system entering next season with a great chance of making an immediate impact.
Season Openers- Evansville opened its 94th season of basketball against Notre Dame. The Aces fell to 62-32 all-time in their season-opening contests with the loss, ending a streak of four season-opening wins in a row.
Preseason NotesA Lot To Look Forward To - Fresh off of its best MVC effort in 13 years, the Aces have plenty to be excited about heading into the 2012-13 season. Evansville is set to return three starters and 11 letterwinners, which comprise 69.3% of its scoring, 77.9% of its rebounding, 68.4% of the squad’s assists and over 70% of the team’s minutes from 2011-12. The Aces used an overtime win in the regular season finale over Missouri State to move from the possibility of being as low as eighth in the league to a final finish of third.
Big Shoes To Fill - Two slots in the starting lineup are available following the graduation of Denver Holmes and Kenneth Harris. Holmes started 89 games in his UE career before finishing with 975 points. The Olathe Kan. native was the top free throw shooter in the Valley last season, hitting 87.3% of his attempts. In two seasons with the Aces, Harris made 63 starts, including all 32 as a senior. He posted 617 points in his time at UE while recording 327 rebounds. Looking to fill those slots will be seniors Ned Cox and Lewis Jones, who each played in all 32 games in their junior years.
A Home Of Their Own - With the hectic schedule at the downtown Ford Center, the Aces were forced to move their practices on campus to the Carson Center. With the schedules of other UE sports along with the university as a whole, the time that the Aces had on the practice floor got to be limited at times. That all will change in October with the opening of the Fifth Third Basketball Practice Facility. Built at a cost of over $3 million, the structure will have floors for both the UE men’s and women’s teams along with new offices and a lounge for both squads.
2011-12 Season-In-Review NotesPlaying Against The Best - The Missouri Valley Conference proved that it is one of the best in the country as it sent seven out of ten teams to postseason play in 2012. Evansville was one of those squads, advancing to its second consecutive CBI. The Aces played 32 games in 2011-12 with 21 of those against postseason teams. Thirteen of its opponents also advanced to the postseason. In all, seven of UE’s games came against teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament.

In 55 seasons at Roberts Stadium, the Aces amassed an amazing .723 win-ning percentage, capturing 604 games. Below is a rundown of the Aces home history at Roberts Stadium and the Ford Center.
Home Court AdvantageJust The Second Time - In the 2012 Missouri Valley Tournament, the Aces went in as the No. 3 seed, the second-highest ever while advancing to Saturday’s semifinals for just the second time. It was a stark turnaround for a team that entered the tournament with just a 4-17 mark in its previous 17 tries. Evansville began with a 72-64 victory over Missouri State, earning the season sweep of the Bears. The win marked Evansville’s fifth Arch Madness victory. With the three-game sweep of Missouri State, the Aces completed their second ever three-game sweep, the other came in 1999 when UE was a perfect 3-0 over Wichita State.
We’re Back - For the third time in four years and the tenth time since entering Division I in 1977, the University of Evansville played in the postseason. In 2009, only Coach Simmons’ second season, he led the Aces to the CIT where they squared off against Belmont. Last year, UE picked up its first postseason win since the 1989 NCAA Tournament win over Oregon State in the opening round win over Hofstra. It has been almost 20 years since UE accomplished the feat as Jim Crews led UE to three-straight postseason berths, including two NCAA tournaments, from 1992-94.
Coaching Them Up - Since his arrival at UE in 2007, head coach Marty Simmons has steadily turned the program around. In three of the last four years, Simmons has finished in the top six in the league after the program had done so just once in the eight seasons before 2009. His squads have shown vast improvement against top competition, winning three of his last five games versus ranked opponents. Prior to that streak, Evansville had fallen in ten-consecutive games against top-25 squads. With a 15-14 regular season mark in 2011-12, Simmons helped UE to its first back-to-back winning regular seasons since 1998-99 through 1999-2000.
Making The Adjustment - For the first time since 1956, the Purple Aces opened a home arena as they began play at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville in 2011. In their first season at the home venue, UE posted an 11-7 mark which included wins over Butler and nationally-ranked Creighton. Evansville got more comfortable with its new surroundings as the season went on, winning its final four regular season home games at the Ford Center.
Award-Winning Performances:
First Team Honor - Junior Colt Ryan became just the fifth player to be named to the MVC All-Conference First Team and the first to garner the honor since Shy Ely did so in 2009 (Marcus Wilson was named on two occasions). Ryan led UE and was second in the MVC, averaging 20.5 points per game while tying for the league lead in steals, swiping two a game. The three-time MVC Player of the Week scored a career-high 43 points last week against Creighton before tallying 12 in Saturday’s win over Missouri State. Ryan was also named to the CollegeHoops.net All-MVC Team. On Thursday, Ryan was named the MVC Scholar Athlete fo the Year.
Sixth Man - Coming off the bench can be a tough task, but don’t tell that to junior Ned Cox, who showed that the role suits him better than anyone else in the MVC. It is that attitude that helped Cox earn Sixth Man of the Year honors. After averaging 7.3 PPG a season ago, Cox saw his average rise by two points. He has ten double-digit scoring efforts, led by a pair of 20-point outings. In a November contest at Illinois Chicago, he set his career mark with 24 points as he hit 9-of-13 shots. He followed that up with a 22-point performance at Indiana State where he was a perfect 4-4 from long range. Cox made two starts for the Aces, scoring 16 points against Oakland City before leading Evansville with 17 points in a start in the regular season finale against Missouri State. He is the second Aces to be honored with the award; Curt Begle picked up the award in 1999.
Honor For The Young Gun - Making the All-Freshman Team was Ryan Sawvell. He got better as the season went on, scoring 10 or more points in a span of seven out of 11 contests in January and February. Sawvell’s top scoring game came against Drake where he knocked down seven shots to score 14 points. In UE’s win at Bradley, Sawvell hauled in 16 rebounds, the most a UE player has had this season. He has been an extremely accurate shooter, hitting 61.7% of his attempts, a tally that would be in the top ten in the nation with enough tries. Sawvell is the 10th UE player to be named an All-Freshman player.
Playing Some D - One of the pleasant surprises for Evansville last season was junior Troy Taylor. The point guard, and the leading rebounder for UE, was named to the All-Defensive Team. Taylor leads the Aces with 5.1 rebounds per game while contributing in other facets

as well, notching 104 assists, 43 steals and 5.4 PPG. Taylor has made two stabs at just the second triple-double in Evansville history, most recently in the home game against Indiana State. He fell just two assists and a point short of accomplishing the feat. He is one of just three players to receive the honor for the Aces. Jeremy Stanton was named to the team each season from 1999-2001 while Reed Jackson notched the award in 1995.

Bringing the University of Evansville basketball program back to glory was the goal for Marty Simmons when he took the head coaching position at UE in 2007. Five years into the process, it can be said that Simmons is well on his way to bringing the Purple Aces back onto the national scene. In three of the past four seasons, he has led the Aces to the postseason, including berths in the College Basketball Invitational in each of the last two years. He helped Evansville to its top MVC finish in over ten years, leading UE to a third place finish in 2012 while leading the Aces into the seimfinals for just the second time since entering the league in 1994. While last season was a roller coaster ride, it is obvious to everyone that the UE program is on its way back to the top.
With a 15-14 regular-season mark in 2011-12, Simmons helped the Aces finish the regular season over .500 for the third time in four seasons, something that had not been done since the 1990’s. Evansville has also enjoyed success against the top competition in the nation, winning three of its last five games against ranked opponents after failing to defeat one in the ten years prior.
Simmons’ success has been noticed by his peers. In three of the past four years, he has finished among the top four in voting for Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Most recently, he finished second in the voting in 2012 after leading UE to a third-place finish in the league. That came after 2011 when Simmons’ Purple Aces finished 9-9 in the MVC and in sixth place after being voted 10th in the pre-season poll. The Aces went on to achieve their first post-season victory since 1989 by defeating Hofstra in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.
Simmons returned to his alma mater as head coach in the spring of 2007. His first squad finished 9-21, bu t one year later, in 2008-09, Simmons led his Aces to a 17-14 record and a berth in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Post-season Tournament. For his efforts, Simmons finished third in balloting for MVC Coach of the Year, trailing only the coaches who led their teams to a co-championship. The 2008-09 Aces achieved Evansville’s best winning percentage since 2000, and first post-season ap-pearance since 1999, when Simmons was an assistant coach with the Aces. Senior Shy Ely was second in voting for Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, and senior Jason Holsinger earned Academic All-America honors.
Prior to his return to Evansville in 2007, Simmons served as head coach for five years at Division II Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where he took over a program that had not won 10 games since 1999 and led the Cougars to 23 wins in 2005 and 25 in 2006. SI UE reached the NCAA NCAA Tournament in 2005 for the first time in 15 years, and Simmons was chosen as Great Lakes Valley Coach of the Year. His 2006 squad did even better, winning three games in the NCAA NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships and advancing to the Elite Eight. SI UE appeared in the national rankings 16 weeks.
A native of Lawrenceville, Ill., Simmons led Lawrenceville High School to back to back Class A state championships and became one of the most celebrated players in Illinois prep history. Simmons spent his first two years of college at Indiana. It was during Indiana’s NIT run in 1985 when Indiana University assistant coach Jim Crews was chosen as Evansville’s head coach. Two months later, Simmons transferred to Evansville. Already designated as the Aces’ team captain while sitting out his redshirt season, Simmons immediately helped turn around the UE program when he became eligible in 1986-87.
