Introduction

The 9U-7500 Transmission Analyzer II shiftselectronically-controlled Caterpillartransmissions. These include the Powershiftplanetary, the Powershift countershaft, the ICM(Individual Clutch Modulation), the ChallengerTractor, the H-Series Motor Grader, and theECPC (Electronic Clutch Pressure Control)transmissions. The analyzer controls thesetransmissions by replacing the vehicle harnessand the electronic transmission controls thatare on board the vehicle. This allows thetechnician to check Caterpillar transmissions on the hydraulic test bench, independent ofthe vehicle.

The following features are contained in theTransmission Analyzer II:

• Easy to read menus, on a lighted LCDdisplay, step the operator through thesequence of operating the TransmissionAnalyzer II. It performs three differenttransmission system functions; checkssolenoid condition, shifts thetransmission, and checks shift leveroperation.

• Analyzer is controlled by an Intelmicroprocessor with Flash memory, so theanalyzer can be easily updated to newtypes of transmissions.

• Connects directly to the solenoids of anelectronically shifted Caterpillartransmission.

• Outputs PWM (Pulse Width Modulated)current to the initialized solenoids, asrequired by Challenger and ElectronicClutch Pressure Control transmissions.

• Capable of turning on solenoids in atimeline sequence, as required for the H-Series Motor Grader. It is also capableof modulating current to one, or all, of theinitialized solenoids at any point in time.

• Performs automatic or manual testing forshorted, and open solenoid coils, on all orany one of the transmission solenoids. The analyzer will also alert you to anintermittent problem with the solenoid coil.

• Checks the shift lever to make sure it isfunctioning properly, on a transmissionthat is not controlled by the Autoshiftelectronic transmission control feature.

Power

Operating on 240 Volts AC

The 9U-7500 Transmission Analyzer II can bepowered from either 110 or 240 VAC 50/60 Hz.It comes from the factory with a line cord whichhas a U.S. 120 VAC, 60 Hz plug. To power itwith 240 Volt AC, remove (cut-off) the 120 VoltAC plug and install a new 240 Volt AC plug.

Power Requirements for Challenger Transmissions

The Challenger 35, 45, and 55 Tractors needmore power to operate their solenoids thanother Caterpillar transmissions. To use the 9U-7500 Transmission Analyzer II on thesetransmissions, a larger power source must besupplied to the Analyzer.

Two different DC power sources are availablefor the transmission analyzer. First, a 12 Voltbattery and the DC power connection with theDC power cable supplied with the unit can beused. Second, a DC power supply with filteredoutput that is capable of supplying 12 VDC at20 Amps, can be used. This is a large powersupply and can be quite expensive topurchase. Do not use a battery charger ofany type to power the transmissionanalyzer.

Operating InstructionsWith the engine turned OFF, the TransmissionAnalyzer II can be used in the Solenoid Test orShift Lever Test modes with the transmissionmounted on or off the machine.

If agear that is not valid for the selected machineis entered, a message stating "!!INVALIDGEAR!!" will appear on the screen. Thismessage will also be displayed if an "R", "N",or "F" is entered when not needed.

3. Continue to shift between different gears, stop testing, or go to a "Shift Lever Test".

a. To stop testing, or to go to a "Shift LeverTest", first leave the "TRANSMISSIONTEST" mode by pressing the "MACHINFO" key.

b. If the transmission has not been shiftedinto "NEUTRAL", the analyzer willcontinue with the screen telling theoperator to shift into "NEUTRAL". Thisscreen will appear as follows.

4. Wait for transmission to stop and hit the"ENTER" key. This screen will appear.

4. Remove both axles from the tractor orscraper, whichever one is being tested.

5. Permit only one operator on the machine.Keep all other personnel away from themachine and/or in the view of the operator.

For Off-Highway Trucks Only, FollowSteps 6 through 15.

6. Move the machine to a smooth, levellocation away from working machines andpersonnel. Put the transmission shift leverin the NEUTRAL position.

7. Activate the parking brake. Raise the body(bed) and install the body retaining pins.Stop the engine. DO NOT move the hoistlever to the LOWER, FLOAT, or RAISEposition while the engine is in operation.

8. Remove both drive axles.

9. Permit only one operator on the machine.Keep all other personnel away from themachine and/or in view of the operator.

Steps 10 through 15 Are for WheelTractor Scrapers and Off-HighwayTrucks.

10. Install the 9U-7500 Transmission ShiftAnalyzer II cables between the Analyzerand the transmission.

11. Turn the engine ON and run at low idlespeed only.

12. Operate the engine until oil is at normaloperating temperature. Cold oil may giveincorrect results.

NOTICE

Do not go above 1st speed, as machine damagemay result.

13. Perform a NEUTRAL to 1st shift with thetransmission analyzer.

14. Check the rotary switch assembly positionby going to the "Shift Lever Test" andverifying that the switch is in 1st gear. Forthe 4/8 SPD, the LOCKUP solenoid shouldbe turned ON.

15. Go back to the Transmission Test screenand perform a 1st to Reverse shift.
