Question 3:What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The genre of our film “One Eye Open” is crime drama. This is shown within our film opening when the man find the body of his wife, Lynette. Her wounds and the man’s shock when he finds her body suggests to the audience that the death of Lynette was not an accident and that she was murdered.

However, as the film is set and created in Britain, “One Eye Open” also qualifies as being a British Social Realism film. Therefore, looking into what companies would produce this kind of film has been extremely useful.

Richwater Films is a British film distribution company which specializes in crime, thriller and action films. The company was launched in 2013 by Jonathan Sothcott and has already established itself in the British independent film criteria. Richwater Films would be a highly suitable film distributor for our film “One Eye Open”. As our film fits under the crime thriller genre it would fit well within this distribution company because it focuses on the same genre, making our film easily recognizable and allowing it to reach our intended audience. The company also focuses on independent films, making Richwater Films more appealing. This allows smaller scale films, like our own would be if produced, to appear in cinema’s. Overall, Richwater Films would be a very suitable distribution company for our film as it has everything that we would look for when choosing a distribution company. Its focus towards crime and thriller independent films makes the company suitable for the distribution of “One Eye Open”.

A larger film production company such as Film 4 is also well suited to distribute a film like “One Eye Open”. Film 4 distributes a wide range of films, all with different genres, this makes it a perfect company to distribute our film. This would make the company well suited to us as it means that they are not particular about the type of film that they produce. They offer a wider range of films to audiences meaning that “One Eye Open” would have no issues in reaching our intended target audience. The company also has a large selection of films which were filmed and edited in Britain, again making it a suitable company to choose for the distribution of our film as it also means that they are more inclined to choose to distribute films with a smaller budget.

In the research process for this task, looking at several thriller films proved to be beneficial as I was able to see what distribution companies they used. I looked at the film Gone Girl to see which company distributed it. The result I got was company Regency Enterprises.

Regency Enterprises would be ideal for the distribution for “One Eye Open” as it offer a wide range of film genre’s therefore there is a higher chance that they would be interested in distributing a film like “One Eye Open”. Another beneficial aspect to this company is that they are well known, this means that the film’sthey distribute would reach a wide audience which would increase the amount of times the film would be watched, generating a large income.
