BAUER MEDIA Bauer Media would be a good company to publish my magazine because they are a well known publishing company that publish popular magazines such as Q and Kerrang which are both very popular and successful within their target market. These are just two examples of popular magazines Bauer publish that are well known by the public by their names alone, and because they are high quality. There is a gap in the market for Bauer Media as they mainly focus on rock music, whereas my magazine is Acapella and nothing like my magazine is published by them. This means that if they published it the people that read their other magazines may be more comfortable spending their money and reading my magazine because it’s published by a reputable and well known publisher.

BAUER MEDIA – THEIR BACKGROUND

Bauer Media Group is a multinational media company based in Hamburg. They were founded in 1875 and they operate in over 16 countries. In a week they publish over 38 million magazines, and have a turnover of over €2000 billion. Magazines they publish feature Kerrang, who specialize in rock, pop punk and metal music, and Q, who specialize in indie, rock and alternative music. They have expanded into Television and Radio, with Kerrang now having their own TV channel and radio show. They expanded into Television in 2005 and into Radio in 2004.

KERRANG MAGAZINE

Kerrang is the worlds largest music magazine published weekly, and they specialize in rock, pop punk and metal music, much like most of the magazines that Bauer publish. The age range of the people that mainly read Kerrang Is 15 – 24, which makes up for 56.1% which shows from that alone they are successful within this social group. Predominately their readers are male, with 54.7% being male and the further 45.3% being female. I have to make sure my magazine also fits within Group E of the Jicnar Scale as that is who Kerrang target their magazine at (students) and I want my product to be the same.

Q MAGAZINE Q magazine is published monthly and they specialize in rock music and they feature bigger artists for example, Coldplay but also smaller artists. This is like my magazine as I feature big, well known Acapella artists and also smaller ones that aren’t as well known yet. Q Magazine is the most purchased magazine and they are also known for the quality of the articles are photography that they have inside their magazine. They are a well known magazine that influences their target audience, which is people aged 15 – 24 with this making up 35.5% of their readers. Kerrang also have a similar target audience. Also like Kerrang, their readers are mainly male with 68.3% being males and only 31.7% being females. I need to make sure my magazine appeals to both genders more equally than Q does.

OPPURTUNITIESBauer Media could market my magazine in different ways, such as with a website which both Q and Kerrang have, which they use to advertise their magazine and what’s inside that week, and the website also allows people to subscribe to the magazine which is a good way to gain more readers. Social networking is a good way of marketing magazines, as nowadays most people use Facebook or Twitter, and my target audience fits within this. Social networking sites are used to keep up to date with what’s going on, people and events that might be happening. As Bauer Media have may magazines and also radio stations, they would be able to mention the release of a new magazine that may appeal to people, for example I found that people that liked acapella music also liked rock music or pop music, which means that my magazine could be advertised in magazines such as Q and Kerrang, or on their radio stations.
