EVALUATION QUESTION 3

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?By Hannah Chyriwsky

Page 2: Evaluation question 3

THE STAGES OF PRODUCTIONFirst of all somebody would have to pitch the idea. This is because in order to come up with ideas for the magazine they should know what type of magazine they are going to create and if they think that it would sell. So once it has been decided that they are going to produce a music magazine, the company must decide on what genre they are going to focus on. By picking what genre they are going to focus on it then makes it clear to the producers what age group they are going to be focusing on. The reason for this is because if they were to create a pop music magazine they are often bought by teenage girls so the magazine would be made for that specific audience. Next they would have to create flat plans of the magazine so the graphic designer knows what the magazine is going to look like and what sort of content there will be in the particular issue. To go with the flat plan they would need a photographer and a journalist, this is because they would need somebody to take the pictures of celebrities to use in the magazine alongside the article which the journalist would write. So once all of the pictures have been taken and the article has been put together they will be sent to a graphic design that has the flat plans so that the magazine can be produced. Once this has happened it will then be given over to the distributors who will make sure that they advertise the product and get it in the shops for the public to buy.

ROLE OF THE DISTRIBUTERThe role of the distributor is to get your product into the shops so that people are able to buy your product. They will first start off with the advertising which could be through social media, billboards, bus stops and actual buses, so that they will get the public familiar with the name of the magazine and the content. This is because before it goes in shops they should get peoples attention of the new magazine so that it has a chance of being bought. Then after all of the advertising it is important to then get it into the shops. So to do this they would pitch to supermarkets, book stores and newsagents to persuade them to sell the magazine, once this has been done the magazine is then in the public eye because it has been put on the shelves so that people can then buy the music magazine.

WHAT COMPANY WOULD DISTRIBUTE YOUR PRODUCT AND WHY?

To produce my magazine I would get Immediate Media Co. The reason for this is because they produce the magazine Top of the Pops, so because they produce this magazine they will have room to produce my magazine because my magazine that I produced has a very similar target audience. So by doing this they will be able to produce more pop music magazines which could bring them in more money because buyers have more of a choice of magazine. Then by working with the production company I will then get Frontline to distribute my magazine so that people could buy it. Frontline do distribute music magazines like: Top of the Pops, MOJO, Kerrang! so this distribution company would be an ideal distributor for my magazine. Frontline distribute magazines in 55,000 retailers across the whole of the UK, so because of this if they distribute my magazine it means that there could be potential buyers as it will be available in many shops. They should want to produce my magazine because they don’t distribute a lot of magazines aimed at children and this is often the target market that buy magazines because they are more appealing to people of this age.

Page 5: Evaluation question 3

DO THEY KNOW THE TARGET AUDIENCE WELL? Frontline magazine distribute a variety of magazines aimed for pre-teens to teenagers that are aimed for both boys and girls. So because of this it shows they know what type of magazine that specific age group buy because they are varied in the type of magazine they distribute. This would be a benefit because the magazine that I created is aimed for this age group, so they would be able to tell if it would sell because they distribute five different magazines for this target audience so Frontline will be able distribute my magazine as they know what they are looking for in customers. My product is similar to Top of the Pops, which Frontline distribute, but this could be a good thing. The reason for this is because even though they are both pop music magazines they will have different content, so if somebody were to buy one of the magazines it would be because they prefer the content of one of the magazines over the other. Frontline do have a good reputation because it is the ‘UK’s leading magazine sales and distribution company’, so as it has a good reputation it won’t put people off buying the magazine because of the company that I allow to distribute my magazine. As my magazine is mainstream it could affect the company, however they already produce magazines aimed for this specific tribe, so because of this my magazine shouldn’t affect Frontline.

Page 6: Evaluation question 3

HOW WOULD YOUR MAGAZINE BE ADVERTISED?My magazine would be distributed mainly on Facebook and Twitter because it is a platform that many teenagers use. So buy doing this it would help advertise what will be in the next issue of my magazine, this could then persuade people to buy my magazine because the post could have been appealing to them. As it is appealing and they would want to find out more they will buy the next issue to see what has to be said. Also to persuade people to follow the magazine on social media, the posts/tweets could also be news about the celebrities for people that are interested in what is going on in that world. Another way how I could advertise my magazine would be on billboards, there are two different ways on how the billboard could look. This is because I could advertise the name of my magazine so then people are familiar with the name when they see it in the shops, but I could also show pictures of the magazine and tell them what is in that issue. By doing this it would raise awareness of my magazine so that when people see this product in the shops they might buy it as they have seen it advertised through social media and outside. Finally I could also advertise my magazine on Frontlines website. By doing this it shows people that there is a new magazine available which could be appealing to their children, it also makes a point that Frontline are producing a new magazine that is aimed for children.

HOW WOULD YOUR PRODUCT BE DISTRIBUTED? Just like normal magazines it will be available in shops because that is where the majority of people buy magazines. The reason for this is because they are on the shelves in supermarkets and bookstores which then catches people’s attention. However if there are people that want to buy the magazine but they don’t particularly want to go out and buy the magazine they can always get it delivered to their house buy subscribing to the magazine. Magazines like Empire and Radio Times allow the magazines to be delivered and they also create a subscriptors addition. On the Empire magazine the subscription cover is different and doesn't have and sell lines. This is because it shows the reader what the main focus of this issue is. Another way how it could be distributed for people who don’t go out every month to buy the magazine could be by making an online edition. This would be appealing to my target audience as well because they tend to use the internet because it is free which will be more ideal for this target audience. So by making an online edition they can still read all of the articles and print off the posters without buying the magazine.
