Evaluation Question 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Page 2: Evaluation question 3

How we collected feedback.

•We made two survey monkey surveys in order to firstly, research our music video genre and secondly to collect the audiences response to our video. we posted them on Facebook along with our video, as well as on Kate Nash fan sites and with the video on YouTube.

What we learned from our RESEARCHFrom these questions we got an idea about who we were targeting our video at, we posted the survey on Kate Nash’s official fan site and the response we got showed that all the fans who did the survey were girls aged 17-20. this gave us the basics of our target audience. It also made us realise that our video must appear to be quite feminine but not too childish.

Page 4: Evaluation question 3

This question was very important as it gave us an indication of what Kate Nash fans expect from a Kate Nash video. The result reinforced what we had found out in our Kate Nash video research as the majority of her fans prefer narrative videos which is often the type of video made by Kate Nash.

This question taught us that it was extremely important to dress our actress for our video appropriately as the style of the artist strongly influences the target audience.

Page 5: Evaluation question 3

By asking what type of music video Kate Nash fans preferred it helped us get an idea of what our video should be like, this question backed up our first thoughts that the video should be realistic and in a naturalistic setting. The question after this showed us that ‘Foundations’ is the most popular Kate Nash video, this video is very realistic so we decided to use this video as the one we drew most of our inspiration from, as its the ones her fans all like best and it fits the conventions that her fans said they prefer in music videos in general.

By finding out more about our target audience it helped us decide how to portray our singer in the video as many fans have similar interests as their idols. We found out that the majority of our target audience are fun and friendly girls who enjoy socialising. We used this information when casting our lead actress as we wanted someone who looked like someone the fans could imagine being friends with, who looked fun loving and very sociable.

Page 7: Evaluation question 3

We learned that our target audience all liked happy songs as opposed to sad songs, this again helped us to understand the type of music video we needed to make in order to make it appeal to the fans of Kate Nash.

This question helped us to expand our primary research further by learning which other indie singer/bands our target audience like, enabling us to research more into the forms and conventions used throughout this genre of music video.

Conclusion of what we learned from our audience RESEARCH• We learned that our target audience is fun loving,

friendly, sociable teenage girls aged 17-20, who like happy songs with realistic music videos and a narrative.

• From the research we understood what conventions of Kate Nash's music videos were most important to her fans and that the music video that would help us most in the planning was ‘Foundations’. The survey was extremely useful to give as an outline of who we were directing the music video towards. It showed us quickly and easily what we needed to include in our music video in order to for fill the expectations of our audience.

What we learned from our audience FEEDBACK

The music video was liked by the majority of the fans who viewed it, this showed that we had successfully created a video that met the expectations of Kate Nash’s fans. They all thought that it made use of forms and conventions seen in Kate Nash's other music videos and that our video matched her typical style of video.

Page 10: Evaluation question 3

The response to this question showed a general consensus that our videos best feature was the mise-en-scene. There were many comments on having a good choice of actress, costume and location which we worked very hard to make sure looked authentic and it appears to have worked as one comment says “it looks like a real Kate Nash video”. The variety of different camera angles was also picked up on which is good as we aimed to used similar angles seen in many Kate Nash videos and from the feed back I can see that the audience recognised this. From this feedback I've learned how important finding the right cast for a video is and how mise-en-scene is what the audience most picks up on as the key identifier of a genre.

Page 11: Evaluation question 3

The criticisms of our video were mostly improvements of editing and camera work, like using shorter shots for example. This feed back made me think about what I’d change if I was doing the project again, personally I would of chosen a more upbeat song and I think the first comment is right and next time I would like to find some way of making the camera steadier in the opening shots. I would also of made the cutting pace faster as some of the shots last quite a while, however this is something seen in other Kate Nash music videos. We agree with many of the criticisms and understand that improvements to the smaller details of filming and editing could be made better in order to have a more smooth running final result.

Page 12: Evaluation question 3

Two of the most important things to us in the making of our music video was insuring we had followed the Kate Nash convention of having a narrative video that fits with the lyrics of the song along with having a cast that look authentic to the music genre, and as these questions show we were successful in achieving these two things.

Page 13: Evaluation question 3

Although some people had criticisms of our editing, the majority agreed that it was similar to the editing forms and conventions seen in real Kate Nash music videos, this shows that although the music video may not be to everyone's taste, they mostly think that we followed the genre conventions well. Conclusion of what we learned form our audience feedbackWe learned that our audience noticed how our video had a strong

use of mise-en-scene that closely followed that seen in music video from our artist and that this is crucial in making the video look authentic. However we now know that if we were to re do the project more attention needs to be paid to the smaller details' of editing and filming to make our video look as much like a professional music video as possible.
