EVALUATION QUESTION 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

WHAT DIFFERENT SOCIAL GROUP IS REPRESENTED?

My magazine represents men and women, but as the main image is a male, it would suggest that the males are more dominant within the Ska music industry and culture, we can tell this from the front cover of the magazine because the main image is taken from lower angle, instead of a front full on view, this makes us think that the men that are features in the magazine and the way that the target audience is made mainly for men shows they have a more dominant role.

Social groups such as young people and the older generation are represented as being into the Ska music.

WHAT PARTICULAR WAY ARE THEY REPRESENTED?

Women are represented as young as stylish, although they come across as moody because of the facial expressions throughout the magazine. This represents both males and females as into Ska music. The facial expressions fit with the genre of music and represent the listeners of Ska music as being serious and passionate about it. I wouldn’t say that they look glamorous in this shoot because the girls are shown more as ‘stylish’ and ‘pretty’ rather than a glamour look.

Men on the other hand are represented and seen as being tough and very individual. This identifies the target audience as being male, although this may appeal to women because of the uni-sex vibe that the magazine gives off. I think this conforms the stereo type of mods and skinheads, the pose is different and I think that it fits well with my magazine.

HOW IS THIS SHOWN? (MEDIA TERMINOLOGY)

The way that this is shown is by simple things such as body language. This shows that they are more laid back and show the personalities within the Ska music.

The way that the body language is shown in the image on the double page spread shows that he is patient, the pose that he is doing shows that he doesn’t see a rush and gives off the impression that he is photogenic in areas and backdrops that he likes.

WHY IS EACH SOCIAL GROUP REPRESENTED IN THIS WAY?

Social groups are represented in this way because I wanted to challenge the stereo types and see if I could manage to come up with a realistic magazine which will appeal to the correct social groups and social groups. The social groups such as men and women and young people and the older generation are a main part of my target audience therefore I wanted it to appeal to the correct audience so that it was representing them positively so that it works and fits in with the genre of music that this magazine gives.
