Evaluation Question 2:

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary

texts?

Page 2: Evaluation Question 2

How my audience can identify my products and ancillary text

The TrailerAt the bottom of the video there is a Twitter name ‘@TheKiteHillDisappearances’, this was done as it allows the fans of the film to follow up on their interest with the trailer and find out more about it. We thought that Twitter was the best way to do this is is easily accessible to the mass market, also many of the people at whom this film is aimed at are on twitter.

The text in which the title is written is also another clear way for the audiences to identify that this film is ours. We used the same text throughout our main product and our ancillary texts. The way that the text is aligned to the left was used to demonstrate

The Trailer

• The settings/different locations I use give a clear indication to the audience of what product is being presented to them.

• The classroom setting show a teacher, with a few students and other educational equipment that you would typically find in a classroom. This will give the audience the idea that what they are watching and the genre are related.

• The titles that appear in the trailer also suggest heavily to the audience that it is a found footage horror film as the way is which they are alligned show that is is done in a documentary style.

• The story of the trailer is demonstrated almost straight away with titles and the first sequence of the trailer. It will straight away tell the audience what they are watching.

• The other important setting which was the forest was vital in giving the audience the impression that they were watching a horror film as typically these types of horror films are set in dark and gloomy woodlands.

• The fact that I am covering various horror film conventions shows that I am making many similarites towards existing and popular horror films therefore this makes the product even more indentifiable for the audience.

The Poster

The Poster• The poster follows all typical conventions such as

the the title being the prominent part of the poster, having a picture in relation to where the film may be set or what may happen there and also tag lines.

• The main image is a long-shot a dark, gloomy and scary woodlands. It will be one of the first things that people will see when looking at it. For the target audience (who are aware of the genre and its conventions) it will automatically make them identify the poster with another one that is similar thus making them realise that this film is of that sub-genre

• Along side the image is the name of the film and its tag-lines. Just by reading them the audience will identify what type of product is being presented to them

How the audience can identify my products and ancillary texts

• This is the name of the twitter oage that I created.• I decided to create this twitter page and add it to my poster as my

research into the mergers of different media formats shows that filmmakers are using web 2.0 to promote there films across other formats too.

• It allows the fans of the film to go to one place and find out more about the film such as its release date.

• Since the poster is something that many people will be able to see I found that it was an important thing to advertise the twitter page on it so more people are aware that there isa twitter page for the poster

• the '@' sign since the emergance of twitter is unviersally regocised as now a twitter name which is why I didn't have to suggest that it was a twitter name.

• This is the twitter page that was create for the fans of the film to go and visit to find out additional information about the film.

• Since our target audience is both males and females aged between 16-24 and twitter's target audience is the same exemplifies the choice we made in creating a twitter page for the film.

• Many international films now are using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to promote their film as its free but also it's very effective in reaching audiences they wouldn't have thought of.

The Magazine

Page 9: Evaluation Question 2

How the audience can identify my products and ancillary texts

• The mid-shot of the three protagonists in the film takes up the majority if the space on the front cover. This is so that the attention goes straight to the three characters and the audience instantly know who is featured in the film.

• The title of the film is the standout part of the cover time terms if texts around the characters. The other words are in similar colours to each other whereas the name if the film is ina completely different colour

• The blood trickling down the 'Empire' suggests further that this is a horror film edition of the magazine.

• The features of the magazine around the front cover also heavily suggesst that this not only suits our film but our sub-genre too as its the 'Found Footage Films Issue'

Success? Expectations met?• With all the products I believe that most of the genreal

conventions were covered enough to make the audience identify them easily.

• Presenting the horror film trailer, film poster and magazine on our test screening event to various people (of the specific target audience) allowed me to get useful feedback, which was mainly positive. This suggests to me that they were satisfied and able to recognised the products.

• I do think that improvements could be made to further develop the identities of these products

• From evaluating this however, I can conclude that expectations were met as far as my products being indentidfied by the audience and therefore it being a success.
