In What Ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The Notion Of LookingThe notion of looking is one of the aspects of Godwin’s theory. In my music video there are several references to the notion of looking.

The first is with reference to the mirror. As the VW is on it journey it has an encounter with a mirror, and as such there are several shots of us seeing the VW through the mirror, and the change that happens during the mirror adds more reference to the notion to looking.

Another reference to the notion of looking in the video is the googly eyes on the VW. The eyes not only bring the VW alive and give it personality, it makes the viewer connect with the VW and lets it take them on a journey.

Also the eyes mean that the VW itself can ‘see’ and creates a sense of understanding.

Not so close up…One convention of music videos is that close ups

are the predominate shot of choice.

In my video this is challenged as most of the shots are from higher angle to help create the bigger picture and a sense of

scale fro the viewer.

Close ups!...However there are numerous points throughout the music video where the close ups predominate.

In these instances is ads to the connection the viewer has with the car, it helps the emotion of the car come across, and it makes the video more interesting and varied.

There is a strong relationship between music and visuals in the music video.

The editing of the video is done to match the beat of the music (the song: what I want) and the cuts between shots.

Page 7: Evaluation question 1

As the main content of the video is stop frame it was made so that all the pictures changed on the beat, not only did this mean that the music had a relationship with the

visuals, it meant that the pictures had a time consistency through them and the cuts flowed, this made it look more professional.

There is also a relationship between the lyrics and visuals in the video.

The main lyric of the song being ‘not getting what I want’, this is said at various moments through out the song and in the video there is an idea that the VW is ‘not

getting what it wants’.

For example the is an incidence in the kitchen when the spaghetti fall down on VW, in the bedroom when it gains a moustache and in the garden when it gets covered in leaves.

In the editing process it was important it get these ‘situation’ as closely matched to the lyrics as possible.

The music video I have made is a concept/narrative video…

As the VW goes on a journey it tells the viewer a story, all be it not very complicated there is a beginning, middle and ending.

… It challenges this by being a stop frame animation in the most part.

Beginning Middle End
