The websites for local newspapers in my area helped give me ideas and interesting facts on how to plan and make my newspaper. There were some conventions that needed to be followed such as the date and the website on the top of the front page. I have also seen that most newspapers use a logo of some sort to define their newspaper. Such as The News uses the Spinnaker tower to define Portsmouth’s local newspaper.

Researching the local Papers

After looking through the local papers I tried to find out what are the common differences and similarities between all of them.

Such as the master head. The same fonts and colours seemed to be used on the newspaper to link it all together. The colours used are normally not very bright such as yellow as it will hurt the readers eyes but a bold colour that will bring the attention to it. Some newspapers use red as it stands out more than other colours.

Also most newspapers are in black and white rather than any other colour. I believe that this is because the price for colour is more expensive to use compared to black ink which is cheaper and much easier to see and read. Normally the only colour on the page is from the photo or the master head. This is so that both stand off the page and draw the attention straight to it rather than anywhere else.

Most of the newspaper web pages I looked at used a lot of advertisement on their pages as it is a good way to get money and see advertisements as many people look on web pages from more information. On web pages advertisements are normally on the top or near the bottom so that they do not need to keep changing the layout every time someone new wants to advertise. Also it means that the layout of their product is not effected by the advertisement and detracts the attention away from the web pages main focus – the stories or headlines.

Developing forms and conventions of real media products

I developed the forms and conventions by using and putting some of my ideas into my product. This was made by adding my newspaper to the web page by having the poster on it to advertise the newspaper.

Another way I developed forms was by adding competitions and interactive things for the audience. I think that this is expected from the audience as I

Challenging the conventions of Local newspapers

I challenged the conventions of local newspapers by making the price lower than some of the newspapers around today. This meant that it would have given them competition for the audience to choose. This will then help with making the product better as the newspaper will want to be that audiences favourite.
