Evaluation Q2

How does your media

products represent particular

social groups?

When researching my

target audience, I noticed that there were

fixed groups almost for

my most significant social groups; Jazz fans

and the Youth. These set

groups are known as

stereotypes and as Perkins stated, ”Stereotypes are NOT

simple!”

Jazz

Fans

Profile

The stereotypical Jazz players links back

to the Golden Age of Jazz during the

American Prohibition so a lot of the

stereotypical values are very traditional.

Stereotypes:

-Older figures-Traditional values-Smokey rooms-Organized fashion-Alcoholic areas (Pubs, bars, Speakeasies, etc)-Plain Colours

Youth

Pro

file

The youth profile has been around for a long

time, but it has evolved along with the human

race and modern life. Although the youth is seen

as a wasted generation, they have shown the

most potential for the future than they ever have.

Stereotypes:

-Bright Colours-Young-Energetic-Creative-Different-Modern

.Young female Figure catches young male eye

Bright Colours appeal to young people.

Slick, modern design of graphics makes the magazine seem more attractive to young people.

Male and female models usedso that it appeals to both sexes.

Stylised font used to draw in teenagers whoare interested in art.

The language I have used

is mainly simple with a

select amount of advanced words. This is

because since the majority

of the text is simplistic,

youth will be able to

understand it, the select

amount of advanced

words is for the more

mature audience and only

add to the text so are not

essential to know.

I have used 4 separate models for

my magazine. Two young female

models, one old and one young

male model. For each model I

have kept their identity secret but

given them a star image, as Dyer

said, “A star is an image, not a

real person.” this means that

people can look up to these

‘stars’ and have them as a sort of

role model. The role model of

each would be useful for the

youth social group as the youth

like to be able to look up to

someone and mold themselves in

their image.
