A shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals

The most obvious link between the lyrics and the visuals in our music video is lip synch, because you can actually see a person singing the lyrics.

In most of Marilyn Manson`s music video the lip synch is used a lot. Normally there are almost no other direct links, since the videos are very artistic and abstract.

Page 3: Evaluation q1

The less obvious links between lyrics & visuals

In the music video "Issues" by Escape the fate when

the lyrics are "This is the death of me, I feel it constantly, Just like an enemy, That wants to see me bleed." we can see many people with different killing devices, such as hammers, axes, ropes, etc.

In Marilyn Manson`s music video "Putting holes in Happiness" when he sings "take a child out back and shoot it" we can see a girl carrying a child, but only for a second.

The less obvious links

In our music video when MM sings "Do we need it? NO. Do we want it? Yeah." we can see a girl waving her head in disapproval and then a crowd putting their arms up, like on elections when people are approving something.

a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented

This shots display how the record company would want the artist to be represented in order to attract the potential target audience. The artist has tattoos (one of which is Marilyn Manson),tongue piercing and wears black clothes and big necklace and a large leather bracelet. She represents a typical fan of Marilyn Manson and rock music, who we are targeting. The relatedness is what the record company would want to emphasis.

a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented

Marilyn Manson is presented as a very powerful controversial provocative stage persona, with an obvious gothic style and who is always as the main character. In most of the music videos other members of the band to not even appear and the band is called "Marilyn Manson".The record company tries to show him as much as possible, because this is what the target audience is interested in. His music is very gothic, which is always being reflected by his appearance, which is quite excentric, over the top and is almost like a representation of the King of Gothic culture. All the makeup, clothes and jewelry make his look even more recognisable.

a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre

This shots are from Ozzy Osbourne`s music video "Let me hear you scream". They first shot illustrates the genre since the look of Ozzy is very conventional for rock music - long dark hair, many rings (skulls and crosses). The colour scheme is also very gothic, the actions are taking place in a castle looking house.

The second shot from the same music video also illustrates the music genre, the gothic looking woman with very crazy long hair, who is wearing all black and has spikes on her shoes is screaming. The writing "hell"on the background is also one of the connotations of the rock genre.

a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre

The first shot illustrates the gothic rock genre, first of all because of the look of the artist - she is pale and wearing black. This is a typical behaviour of people on the rock concerts - dancing, jumping and screaming, exactly what she is doing. We used this shot before the LIVE footage to emphasise it.

The second shot has a very gothic look, the traditional graveyard gothic imagery combined with the dark looking overlay lip synch. The colour scheme is dark and the writing on the graveyard can be seen.

a shot that shows an intertextual reference

This shot in the beginning of our music video was influenced by the film "The strangers", where a girl was standing outside and just staring. There is nothing much happening, however, the character is being introduced to the audience, since the artist is making an eye contact. It works in an effectively creepy way as well, the questions rise straight away - what is she doing there? why is she not doing anything, just looking?

a shot that demonstrates your use of camera

The first shot is a close up of Alex`s face, which we have filmed through the tree. The shot has a lot of texture and is very detailed, the usage of foreground makes it more interesting and keeps up with our theme of nature and decadent fairy tale.

The second shot is also an extreme close up which varies in focus. We have used manual focus again and changed it. It fits very well with the music and makes it more dynamic.

a shot that demonstrates your use of camera

The first shot from the MM`s music video Hey, cruel world is an extreme close up, which was deliberately blurred. Close ups are widely used in the music videos.

The second shot is from a video "Never call me when you sober" by Evanescence, which, as well as our shot has foreground with bottles and food on the table. It makes the shot more interesting, full and introduces us to the character, since it changes our perception of him, we almost see him "through this bottles".

a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting

The first shot was lit by a table lamp, in a video it is moving and creating a very interesting mysterious atmosphere, also, because it is out of focus. Different parts of the face are being lit, not everything at the same time which makes it more dynamic, it fits with the music and is generally an unconventional usage of lighting.

The second shot was lit using a studio lighting, however, we made sure it is relatively hard and lits only the smoke and the artist. It created a very eery feel about the shot, and helped to keep up with the decandence fairy tale look.

a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting

This two shots are from Lady Gaga`s music video applause. Even though the genre of it is different, this music video has connotations of a rock music video.

The first shot clearly demonstrates the use of light since the flash was used and a shot was overexposed. It creates kind of a show-like atmosphere and is very effective.

The second shot is being lit with a very hard light, which created the sharp edged shadows and lit the fog, which creates a mysterious atmosphere. This usage of light is similar to the way we have used it in the shot 2 on the previous slide.

a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene

This two shots are from the music video "I just wanna live" by Good Charlotte. They look very unique because of the very unconventional mise-en-scene. The artists are dressed up as food, which makes the whole video ironical, but they still have loads of tattoos and can see them playing which represents the rock genre.

Page 15: Evaluation q1

a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene

This two shots represent our idea of the style of the video being a decadence fairy tale.

In the first shot the artist is wearing a very weird blue coat and hills, there is fog everywhere and confettis on the floor, but you can not see any surroundings, which creates a feeling of her either being lost in her head or her fairy tale.

In the second shot an artist is riding a tiny bike in the fog. Once again, it contributes to the idea of fairy tale and childness. However, the colour scheme and the style is maintained to still look gothic.

Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos

The idea of violence and fighting in the music video was borrowed from Eminem`s music video Till I collapse, made of scenes from the movie "Green street". i thought it worked quite effective and made it more dynamic. Also, we used the idea of having cold colour scheme, blue colours, since it creates a feeling of detachment of the two characters, and emphasises the idea of fighting.

Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos

We have used a church imagery in our music video since it is quite typical for MM`s music videos. One of his albums is called "Antichrist Superstar". In the music video for his song "Disposable Teens" he is wearing Pope`s clothes, and performs in his normal manner, which works effectively as this two images are very contrasting
