Evaluation of College Magazine
Mast head is the biggest font on the page, to catch the readers attention.
Main cover line is the second biggest font, it also anchors the main image.
Subtext is in a different colour to make the cover lines stand out more.
Cover lines frame the main image.
Consistent colour scheme throughout.
Limited fonts used.
Main image uses direct address. I used a different image to my sketch because it didn’t have direct address.
Main image is brightly lit in medium shot. She has open body language and her outfit matches the colour scheme: grey.
Font’s not unique to the other fonts used on the page.
Colour makes it difficult to read against the main image.
Text overlaps her face. Main image doesn’t fill up the whole space.
Main image may be too bright because you can’t see some of the text.
No puffs are included, this would add value to the magazine and make people want to buy it.
I’ve not included an issue date or barcode.
There’s no positioning statement like “Best selling magazine at Priestley!”
I could have used colour bars to highlight the text and make it more readable.
Title is the largest font on the page. The white stands out against the image.
Column structure. Little description for each page.
Pages are numbered, the page title is in a bigger font to catch the readers attention.
I have included smaller sub-images which relate to articles in the magazine.
Similar font used throughout.
Headings to divide the contents.
Colour scheme is too simple.
I haven’t included an issue date or the magazine title.
Only one font used.
The page name doesn’t stand out very much.
I’ve only included two sub-images which aren’t near their relevant pages.
How did you use new media technologies in the construction of your college magazine?
To create the front cover we used PhotoShop.
To create the contents page we used QuarkXPress.
I used the text tool, circled above, to create my masthead and cover lines and I inserted my main image by opening the file and fitting it to the page.
Opening QuarkXPress we had to select how many columns we wanted and the facing pages button. I used the text and image tool to insert the columns and sub images.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of both the product and your use of new media technologies?
Main image fills the whole of the page, attracting the readers attentions whereas mine is mainly background.
My cover lines frame the main image like the GQ magazine.
Main cover line anchors the main image and is the biggest second biggest text on the page, similar to College Read but it’s not as visible on my magazine.
Mast head is the biggest text on the page and is in the top left corner like “GQ”.
This magazine includes an issue date but not a barcode whereas mine has neither.
Colour scheme is simple and consistent: white and grey.
The colour makes it difficult to read whereas in GQ the font stands out.
The main image gives direct address to attract the reader but the GQ magazine doesn’t.
The GQ font is memorable and unique but College Read is very basic.
