IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT, USE DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

MASTHEADMy masthead is very similar to the masthead of the Rolling Stone magazine with the main image overlapping some of the masthead as it is in the Rolling Stone magazine. In the Rolling Stone magazine the font of the text is serif this makes the magazine relate more to the genre of mixed music. However in my magazine I have done my font in a sans serif font which relates more to the target audience and the genre of my magazine. So I believe I have developed the masthead from the Rolling Stone magazine as I made it fit in with the genre and the style of my own magazine but with the same positioning of the Rolling Stone magazine.

COLOUR SCHEMEThe colour scheme of my magazine in black and white. I have chosen this as my colour scheme as the target audience for my magazine is males age 16-24. This colour scheme works well for the intended target audience as they are colours that this style of people would wear in the genre of rap music. I also looked at the Vibe magazine which is a rap music magazine the colours used on this magazine front cover was black, white and yellow. This works well as it has a bold appearance. So I followed this convention so that my work also had a bold style to it; the only difference being I took out the yellow in my magazine.

STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHYFor my front cover I have done a medium long shot of my male model. I chose this to be that shot I took as it was what the majority of rap artists photo shoot shots consist of and I discovered this in my research. In my contents page I had a long shot of another male model this is used rarely in other rap music magazines. However I did find an image like this in the Vibe magazine and this works effectively as it fills a whole page. In my contents page I have followed this convention so that my work also had a long shot in the contents page as this was unusual and looked different. However in my double page spread I had another medium long shot and a mid shot. I had the mid shot cover up one whole page of the double page spread as I had seen this in the Q magazine and I think this worked very effectively. I have again followed this convention so that my work also had a mid shot in the double page spread as this made it look professional and neat. However the difference in mine and Q’s magazine double page spread is that I have also added another image into mine whereas Q hasn’t and left it with only one image.

BARCODEFor my front cover I have added a barcode to the front page most magazines do this apart from Rolling Stone so this makes that magazine look more unique and different. However I have challenged this convention as I think a barcode on the front cover works well and finishes the front cover off.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT, USE DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

PAGE NUMBERSFor my contents page I have very closely used the same set up as Base magazine with the line up of what’s that most interesting pages in the magazine and these are the only ones used for the contents page. I followed the conventions for this as the page numbers are on the contents page in large and have one of the first things that grabs your attention.

FONTSFor my front cover the masthead is in a bold sans serif font making it really clear what the magazine is and the masthead stands out. However the subheadings on the front page are in a serif font taking away the complete masculine edge a little bit. This is effective as there is a contrast between the two fonts and this is the same on the Rolling Stones front cover apart from they are the other way round. On my contents page my font is very neat and bold in serif with the clear showing of difference between the subheading and normal text. This was done in the Base magazine and works effectively. In my double page spread my masthead for was similar to the front cover and was very bold and in a sans serif font so you can see the difference between the normal text and the masthead. The subheadings are in the same font as the normal text but just larger. This is similar to the Vibe magazine. So in the fonts section I have followed these conventions very closely and it has worked effectively.

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

GENDERMy magazine features male characters only. This is shown through my use of photography in my front cover , contents page and double page spread. This shows that the magazine features male characters only as the people I have used to photograph are only male and I have no female characters in this magazine.

Page 9: Evaluation

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

AGEThe age group that my magazine features is 16-24 year olds. This is shown through the layout of my magazine as it isn’t formal and has quite a teenage appeal to it and the use of photography again as the characters in my photography are of the similar age to the age group my magazine features. The characters of my magazine are in the age grouping of 16-24 so this adding photos of characters this similar age range will help to reflect the age range of my audience my magazine features. The age range in my magazine supports the stereotype of a typical teenager which everyone presumes to be a gangster or a chav. This is correct as the genre of my magazine is rap music and this is a style of music that this stereotype of teenagers listen too.

Page 10: Evaluation

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

CLASSThe social class featured in my magazine is working class. This is because the magazine is cheap and the characters used in the magazine are also shown to be of the working class as they are not posh but are not of a complete lower class so the characters in the magazine relate to the intended audience that are going to read the magazine. There is also middle class that might want to read this magazine as it in ways can be quite sophisticated and the social group of a teenager young adult can be quite hard to recognise. But I believe that my magazine represents more of a working class social group. If we go back to the stereotyping of the social class of teenagers/young adults it would most definitely be the working class so my magazine supports the stereotype.

Page 11: Evaluation

ETHNICITYThe ethnicity of my magazine features a someone of the Philippines ethnicity. This character is the most dominant for my magazine and it the main coverage of the pages that I have produced. The look of the character I have used works effectively as there fashion adjusts there culture to the genre of the magazine. The ethnicity in my magazine is not reflected in my audience as in my research I thought that my magazine would have an audience of black (British) but as I have changed the ethnicity of the characters in my magazine to Philippines and white (British) my audience is now multicultural. There are no positive or negative representations of ethnicity in my magazine. My intention in my research was to have someone of the black (British) ethnicity but this isn’t how my magazine photographs ended up being making my magazine open to any ethnicity and this also takes away the stereotype of only black people being interested in the genre of rap music.

AUDIENCEThe audience may read my magazine for entertainment purposes. For example, escaping, relaxing, getting intrinsic cultural or aesthetic enjoyment. Or they could be reading the magazine to help them with their personal identity. For example, finding models in behaviour. These are the type of things my intended audience would buy my magazine for and would hope to discover and be able to see in the magazine itself.

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

INTERMEDIA PARTNERSInterMedia Partners would be the company that would fund my magazine. I have chosen this company as a possible publisher, as they also fund magazines such as Vibe, which is the same music genre to my magazine. Even though the company already have a magazine of the same genre they would also want to publish mine as my magazine consists of more underground artists and not well known artists. If the publisher has two similar magazines in their company it is going to start a sense of competition so the audience will buy the magazine they prefer but this doesn’t matter for the company as either way the money is going back into their company.

Page 14: Evaluation

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

HARRISON PRODUCERSHarrison Producers are the competition to InterMedia Partners this company also publishes a magazine called XXL which is also the same genre of music my magazine is. Again even though the company already have a magazine of the same genre they would also want to publish mine as my magazine consists of more underground artists and not well known artists. However this magazine doesn’t consist of massively famous artists. Again my magazine would be in competition of the XXL magazine and would help to get the company more money as it wouldn’t matter which magazine the audience bought.

Page 15: Evaluation

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

COMPANY I HAVE CHOSENInterMedia Partners is the media institution that I have decided to distribute my media product. I have chosen this company to fund my media product and in there is a difference in the Vibe magazine and in my magazine. Whereas in Harrison Producers XXL magazine the two magazines are too similar as they both consist of underground artists that aren't well heard of. So InterMedia Partners will have two different magazine in competition with each other that are slightly different with the artists inside each of the magazine so this will create more money for the company itself.

HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?KickerThe use of the kicker helps to draw the audience to buy the magazine as it gives a feel of what is going to be inside the magazine. By naming a few big artists will help people buy the magazine. Also the artists listed in the kicker are all of the same genre of music to make it clear what the genre of music in the magazine is.

MastheadThe masthead is written in same serif making the magazine look more bold and formal. Also with the main image covering the masthead shows that the magazine is intended to be well known and do not need to show the whole name of the magazine for it to sell as it will be popular. The use of colour within the masthead is a is plainly black and white welcoming both genders.

BarcodeA barcode is used for all magazines. However in this magazine the barcode almost finishes off the front cover as it puts a blunt stop to the text giving it a neat finish.

Date and priceThe font size of the date and price is the smallest font on the page however it is large enough to see. So if the audience is a collector of the magazine they will be able to see which date the magazine was published on without a worry.

Main ImageThis photo of Bryan is a medium long shot. Using this image of a modern and new artist will also grab the readers attention as they will want to find out the latest music and hot tracks inside the magazine making the reader buy the magazine to carry on reading.

Buzz WordThe use of these buzz words makes the audience intrigued to what other exciting things are in the magazine. As it gives a sense what is actually going to be in the magazine but it doesn’t give too much away. The way the buzz words are laid out on the front cover is unusual as they are in two different sections representing two different parts to the inside of the magazine

Sub HeadingThe use of serif font makes the text simple and easy to read/understand. The text included is attention grabbing and gives a clear indication of who the story line is about. The font looks uniformed but also has a slight immature effect to it making it fit with the target audience making it more appealing to them.

Page 18: Evaluation

HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?MastheadFor the masthead of my contents page I have used the name of the magazine itself in the same front from the font cover but make the font look more see through but kept the name of the magazine there. Over the top of that I have added ‘contents’ in the same sans serif font but in a bold black colour to fit with the colour scheme. This works effectively and makes the contents page look instantly interesting.

Main imageThe image on my contents page is different to all the other images used in my magazine. This is a long shot showing the whole of the models body, the clothes he is wearing is they type of clothes that id expect my target audience to wear so this will appeal to the audience and make them want to buy the magazine to get more possible fashion ideas.

Buzz WordApplying the word features in one of the largest fonts on the page makes this stand out. This then triggers the reader to see what is underneath it.

Menu stripFor the menu strip I have only selected specific pages from the magazine that will want to be enough to put on the contents to make the audience want to buy the magazine. The subheading of the stories is in a serif font and is very bold and every capturing however the normal text is in a sans serif font and is a lot smaller and gives a quick summery on what is in that article.

Page NumbersThe page numbers are in a large font and this will help the reader to understand which article is on what page. They are bold and are black so it fits to the colour scheme of black and white.

AdvertisementThe use of putting the Facebook and Twitter logos at the bottom on the contents page help to promote their magazine in all different kinds of ways.

Page 19: Evaluation

HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?Main imageFor the main image on my double page spread I have used a mid shot of the main model through the whole of my magazine. I decided this would look good as it is a similar thing to what the Q magazine does. This would attract/address my audience as if they like this artist they would buy the magazine to read this whole double page spread that is an interview with him. Also the is main image could be used as a poster if cut out of the magazine.

Artist nameThis text is bold and makes a clear statement to who this article is about if they are unsure of the artist. This font is in sans serif and works well with the theme of the rap genre of music. Also another interesting feature of the artist name is that the surname is larger than the first name making it more unique and individual.

AdvertisementThe use of putting the Facebook and Twitter logos at the bottom on the double page spread helps to promote the new artist in all different kinds of ways and will also open new opportunities for the artist himself.

Smaller ImageThe use of a second image on the double page spread helps to separate the page up a bit also the target audience age group will prefer a smaller amount of interesting text and a few images rather than a huge amount of text and no images so this will be appealing to the target audience.

Main textFor the main text in my

double page spread it has been separated into

different sections to fit with all the organisation

of the interview. The layout of the page will work well and appeal

with the reader as it isn’t too much writing

at once and will help to please the target

audience as it will make them feel like they have

their moneys worth of information but not got bored with the amount of text that there is on

the page.

MastheadThe masthead works effectively as it is not the most powering feature to the whole of the double page spread however it is powerful enough for the reader to see this before the lower text to understand what the double page spread is about. Also the colours of the masthead work well with the colour scheme.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

COULD YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR PROJECT WITHOUT USING ANY TECHNOLOGY? Whilst I have been doing my research, planning and creating the actual product I don’t think I would have been able to do most of the tasks I have been able to do without technology. It has helped me create a professional looking magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread and help me with my research using the internet.

WHAT PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY COULD YOU HAVE DONE WITHOUT?However I do believe some of the work I have done could have been used without technology. For example, the survey as I would have been able to hand write this and give it out to people around college. The interview as I could of hand written this down to show that what the interviewee has said and the flat plan as I could of drawn this out instead of using Microsoft Word to help me show the intended structure of my magazine.

WHICH PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY COULDN’T YOU DO WITHOUT?The piece of technology I couldn’t do without would have been Photoshop. This is because this is the most important part to the project as it created my magazine and gave it a good and professional looking finish. If I didn’t have Photoshop throughout the process of creating my magazine the finished product wouldn’t look as good or professional as it does so this is the piece of technology that I couldn’t of don’t this without.

WHAT WERE THE POSITIVES OF USING TECHNOLOGY?The positives of using technology was that all the files were together and organised. Also all the work was put into folders so it couldn’t be lost or damaged. Another advantage of using technology is that it is fast and easy to use and using technology gets the job done much quicker than what it would if it was hand written.

WHAT WERE THE NEGATIVES OF USING TECHNOLOGY?The negatives of using technology is that you are limited to doing work. For example, most of the work had to be done in lesson times and frees so I had to be fully focused to get all my work finished on time and to make it good in the amount of time that I had.

Page 22: Evaluation

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELINIMARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?

Looking at the difference between the preliminary task front cover and contents page and my final products front cover and contents page I have improved my skills using Photoshop. I am not better at positioning the images and text making sure it all relates and have a good finishing look. The skills I have developed along this 13 weeks is organising a page correctly and filling it with different features that will attract and audience/ reader. There is a huge difference in the presentation of my preliminary front cover and my final product front cover. My skills have improved and my final product has a professional look.
