particular social groups?
To start, the re is no re al s te re otype to m y m agazine as the only im age is the m ain one
of Me gan.
The clothe s s he was we aring we re black, and s he was we aring a band t-sh irt und e r he r
jacke t. The black and the nam e of the band both le t the aud ie nce know she is linke d to
rock m us ic, along s id e the s hould e r le ngth d ye d hair.
TH E m agazine is aim e d at te e nage rs pre d om inate ly, m ale s and fe m ale s e qually,
although it could appe al to thos e s lightly old e r. The us e for the te e nage r on the front
he lps to show who it is aim e d at.
The ge nd e r is not re ally spe cific as I would like m y m agazine to appe al to both ge nd e rs
on a ne ar e qual bas is . I only use d bas ic colours on m y cove r for th is re ason, as we ll as
the black and re d linking to rock.
I us e d a rocky font throughout the whole m agazine so that the ge nre would be
im m e d iate ly known. I also place d the m asthe ad and pull quote on a s light angle to
sym bolis e that rock d oe s not follow the us ual conve ntions of s ocie ty.
Talking of s ocie ty, m y m agazine is not particularly aim e d at any social clas s , as it is
ope n for anybod y to re ad . Although, saying th is , not m any uppe r clas s pe ople are going
to want to re ad a rock m us ic m agazine – S o d ue to that, I suppose m y m agazine will
m ainly be aim e d at m id d le class citize ns , and m aybe s om e working class .
3. What kind of m e d ia institution m ight d is tribute
your m e d ia prod uct and why?
The Be st publishe r for m y m agazine would be baue r as the y alre ad y
publish som e m agazine s of the sam e ge nre , two of the m ain one s b e ing
Ke rrang! and Q .
Baue r are good as the y targe t young ad ults and te e nage rs wh ich is s im ilar
to what I am aim ing for.
O bvious ly we d on’t shut out the old e r re ad e rs , as som e tim e s the re would
be a fe ature in the m agazine s about a band from tim e s gone by… for
e xam ple Q ue e n or bon jovi from the age s .
Baue r are a huge publishe r firm , bu t the y only d o the se two rock m us ic
m agazine s… the re st is othe r kind s of m us ic, plu s film and goss ip
m agazine s .
4. Who would the aud ie nce be for your m e d ia prod uct?
Rock m agazine s usually se e m to appe al to m ale s s lightly m ore than the y d o to
wom e n, but noth ing re ally m ore than a 60:40 bas is .
The m ain age group for a rock m agazine , such as Ke rrang! s e e m s to be te e nage rs
– those be twe e n the age s of 1 6 and 1 9.
The ge nre appe als to any e thn icity. The re are no bound arie s as to who re ad s the
m agazine s , or who lis te ns to the m us ic, although it s e e m s to be pre d om inate ly wh ite
brits / am e ricans who take m ore of an inte re st.
Inte re sts would includ e playing instrum e nts and atte nd ing gigs .
Why the y lis te n to Rock…
Most rocke rs lis te n to th is ge nre be cause the y like the m e ssage s that the songs se nd
across , and the pass ion that is put into the lyrics . Rock m us ic is a good way of re le as ing
your ange rs and frustrations , as we ll as pass ing ove r m e ssage s of love and hope .

The language I u se d was inform al and s im ple so as to e nsure the
aud ie nce includ e d as b ig a range of pe ople as poss ible .

re ad ing, the que stions and pull quote s contain ing language that
would appe al m ost to those of m y targe t aud ie nce .
I also trie d to use band s throughout m ost of it that

to attract the m into re ad ing d ue to the re b e ing

7. Looking back at your pre lim inary task, what d o you fe e l you
have le arnt in the progre ss ion from it to the full prod uct?
At the tim e of cre ating m y pre lim inary task, I d id n’t know
ve ry we ll how to use Photoshop or in d e s ign.
Proof of th is is the background on the cove r of m y
m agazine s . For the cove r I m ad e for m y pre lim inary task, I
wante d to cut out the background , but I d id n’t know how to
d o th is . For the m ain task, I was a little m ore confid e nt, and
so I p laye d around with the tools , and found a way to d o
th is . Without the busy background , the cove r line s could b e
s e e n and re ad a lot m ore e as ily.
I th ink the ove rall look of the m agazine has im prove d too,
with the cove r line s , the pu ll quote s and the m asthe ad
looking a lot m ore profe ss ional on m y m ain task than it
looks on the pre lim inary one . O n the m ost re ce nt one , I
also inclu d e d a foote r, wh ich was som e th ing I d id not d o on
the first one .
