ACE Magazine Evaluation

Introduction• We were asked to choose a topic to cover for our

coursework.• The choices were a music magazine or an opening

scene for a film.• I decided to choose the music magazine option.• My first task was my preliminary task were I made a

college magazine.• I started to look closely at some magazines that would

interest me like NME, Q and the rolling stone but I got used to NME so I my magazine was very similar to this top seller.

• I sketched some designs to get an idea of what my magazine will look like and these sketches gave me more of a understanding of what the layout should look like.

Challenging Conventions • The genre is Magazine

• I have used a bold heading for the front cover and it is at the top of the page in the left hand corner. My front cover image is the Main feature of the magazine. The image of the front cover is dominating the front page.

• My contents page shows the same topics that are in the magazine every time and also features.

• It was vital to use typical elements so that I looks professional and also it is well noticeable to the public eye.

• Yes, I used a bright yellow colour palette for the background on my contents page and I only have one picture on that page.

• It is vital to do something different because people will find it boring reading a very similar magazine over and over again.

Appearance.

• Indy clothes e.g skinny jeans , tight jumpers etc.

• Long hair (barnet), slim face etc• Sitting on rails outside.• Lighting was outside, sunny day.• Grayscale and RGB

Distribution

• NME• Why? Because I have a very

similar layout to their magazine and my inspirations came form this magazine.

• I also think that they would distribute my magazine because it is all about new music and it is reasonably cheap which will attract more customers

Audience

• Gender- Male

• Age- 16-25 yr olds

• Nationality - British

• Genre - alternative Indy rock/ Punk

• This is a good audience target because people this age want to hear this music and want to know about the new bands.

How did you attract/ address your audience

• ACE shows great music “ACE” and its based off the song the “the ACE of spades”

• The colour palette is very dull for the background but the boxes around it are very bright so that they stand out.

• Language style is very slang wise• The headline of the double page spread

reflects off a song that “The Volume” sang. There are two main photos that dominate the page and the structure is very similar to NME’s.

• There is no ideologies about celebrities in the magazine because it shows real bands who care about their music not their image.

Technology

• I have learnt a bit about technology like:

• Photoshop - placing images and cropping them as well as taking away the background.

• InDesign - creating the magazine itself

• Blogger - posting blogs

Preliminary Task

• My final piece is better because my images are better quality and so is the colour palette

• I have a better logo• I took more time making my

final product and it worked out well.

• I used more of Photoshop for my final piece unlike the prelim task

• The layout is much neater and doesn’t look crammed together like my Preliminary task did.

Conclusion

• Key strengths - the layout, the colour, the feature article and the images.

• Weaknesses - lack of photos on the contents page and bottom bar on the bottom of the front cover.

• I feel that I have accomplished a lot from doing this and now that it is finished I think that it is rather close to the real deal if I made a few small tweaks to enhance it.
