Abdullahi MohammedMedia Film Trailer Evaluation.

Page 2: Evaluation.

Introduction. For my A2 coursework I was required to create a film trailer

as a group. We done this by looking at existing genres in order to create our own.

As individuals we had to create a film poster & a film front cover of our film

In this presentation I will be answering the following questions:

In what ways do your media product use, develop or challenge forms & conventions of real media products.

How effective is the combination of your main product & ancillary task.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback.

How did you use media technologies in the construction &research, planning & evaluation stages?

My Group

My group consisted of 4 people including myself:

Abdullahi > Cameraman, was given this position as I was better at using the camera and applying to the rule of thirds to every shot that we captured.

Amina> Was given the position of cinematographer as she was best able to manage the groups technical aspect & keeping the group in shape.

Mojo> Was given the role of the producer & creating the story board as his artistic skills produced an excellent narrative.

Meddy> Was given the role of editor & director has he had the basic knowledge in keeping the group together & the skills to edit & create a beautiful trailer.

In what ways do your media product use, develop or challenge forms & conventions of real media products. I have challenged media conventions of real media

products by removing the typical stereotype that woman are only helpers, however in our trailer we have made her the hero.

I have followed many conventions with regards to creating my front cover as I did research into ‘Total Films’ a film magazine which gave me ideas to create my own magazine. For example in one of their magazines Tom cruise is placed in front of the masthead I’ve done the same with my poster as this shows the film cover is well known.

Continued We have the typical conventions in our film trailer such as

humour, action, weapons & the upbeat non- diegetic sound. Different types of camera angels such as close up on the ‘villain’ to portray him as evil & establishing shots to let the audience know where the film is being shot.

We have also made our trailer similar to professional trailers for example we have a slow start in the beginning and it slowly picks up pace then the soundtrack changes and we are put straight in the main action .

The type of sound track we used was influenced by the trailers such as Dark Knight, Transformers & Ocean 11 this mixture enabled to create a good balance mood.

How effective is the combination of the main product & ancillary task.

As you are able to see in my poster & front cover the colours are the same. I have constantly used red & white by purpose because when the audience see these colours they will automatically link it to ‘The Blood Sport.

For my poster I have used actual scenes from the trailer because when the audience watch the trailer it wont be something new to them as they have already seen it on a poster thus is a good combination.

Also in towards the ending of the trailer the release date and website which appears in red & white, I’ve done the same to make the audience remember it whenever they are out or when they see it.

By doing all of this it makes our product look professional and not basic as it our product reflects the director, actors, editor & the camera and they all have their own ideologies to make something basic into a master piece.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback? If it wasn’t for our audience, our trailer wouldn’t be brilliant it

is now. I believe audience feedback is crucial as they know when

something is wrong. In the first draft of our trailer we had giggles and extra

noises in the background & also our actors voice was to fast paced for some scenes. Thus by gaining our audience feedback we was able to realise the mistakes we was creating and had to make changes straight away.

Some Audience Feedback: Positive: You have used conventions well  You have tried to establish a genre and narrative successfully You have introduced characters well and with some comic value which made for enjoyable viewing (I am hoping this was intended) You have successfully integrated diegetic and non-diegetic sound to help establish pace and genre which is effective It is edited nicely, very clean and invisible I like the camera work, especially how you have used focus pulls in places.

Constructive Criticism:

I would perhaps consider the non-diegetic music more, by this I mean making it a little more obvious in places and perhaps having it throughout the trailer - I think it is a little too low when Yasser is talking on the phone and this could affect the pace.  Also perhaps there could be a punchier sound after 'LET THE BETTING COMMENCE'?The sound on "SPORT" at the end doesn't match the visual - it's not in time

Continued We as a team have taken all these

positive & constructive feedback and used it to make our trailer the best it can be within our capability.

I learnt the audience is always right & we should listen to what they have to say as it create a successful trailer or make unsuccessful trailer.

Using the correct software’s is vital because it gives you high quality finish & looks more professional.

I used Photoshop to create my front cover & poster, it allowed to me create a professional piece Using tools such as magic wand allowed me to remove unwanted background & the healing tool allowed me duplicate bits of the image without destroying the actual key image.

Using final cut pro on the apple mac has enabled us to create such a good trailer. At first it was difficult to get used to but however a member in my group had already grasped the skills to edit and taught the group how edit to, so we could whilst he was absent. Final cut pro allowed to cut clips, add soundtrack & credits to our film trailer. This made our trailer look more professional.

We used blogger to post our work online, this allows us to keep our work organised & allows us to share information with group members more quickly.

We used the Nikon camera to record our films and capture photos. The camera enabled us to have a high quality finish & made our work look more professional.

Would I change anything now? If I was given another chance I would change

many things such as; having more scenes to create an action packed trailer.

Choose a different location to make the trailer more exciting.

Use more actors to keep the audience more interested in the trailer.

Do more research into diegetic & non – diegetic sounds to make the trailer even better than before.

If possible to learn how to use after effects to create a good dramatic storyline.
