Evaluation 4 – How did you use media technologies in the construction and research,

planning and evaluation stages?

How have I progressed from AS?I have found A2 more challenging but interesting to learn a variety of editing techniques into the processing stages of creating my music video. Furthermore, the use of different software has enabled me to achieve the outcome of my ancillary tasks. Due to not taking up Media Studies for GCSE, from AS I gained knowledge of the typical conventions that are included in Horror and Thriller openings. During AS the software used to create our Horror opening was limited as we only used iMovie to edit the footage filmed and Garage band to create the music in which was played as a background for our opening. Also the knowledge for editing techniques and special effects used from AS has expanded during the course of A2 because I have become acquainted to learning how to edit my footage to the beat of my chosen song but to also get the timing right of when I included scenes of lip synchronisation into my music video. Moreover, throughout A2 I have become aware of how to create a brand Identity for my chosen unsigned band.

The difference in editing techniques used from AS to A2.

To create my music video using iMovie, I have used different techniques compared to what I used to create my opening of a Horror movie.

The different effects I have used are:• Muting the sound on the footage filmed so that all you can hear is

the song. • Changing the colour of the footage to add eeriness to my music

video.• Adding fade in/fade out and blurry transitions.• Editing the footage to the beat of the song and in time with the lip

synchronisation.

What kind of software I have used?• The creation of my music video was done through the use of iMovie

where I was able to select the clip/scene that I wanted and edit it to correspond with the beat of the song.

• To design the ancillary tasks of the digipack and the advertisement for the release of the album I have used: - Power Point for the creation of the CD, album cover and the back cover of the digipack. - Power point was also used to design the advertisement- I have used Photo Shop to edit the photographs which I took of the band members to include on my ancillary tasks. - Microsoft paint was also used for the colouring of the band members on the CD and insert design.

• I have used a website called font space to create the chosen font for my brand identity which is included on the ancillary tasks.

Altering the sound

So that the sound of the footage does not appear whilst playing my music video, I have muted the clip by sliding the slide bar of the volume level to 0%.

Page 7: Evaluation 4

Changing the colour of the footage.Increasing the exposure to make it a little dark

Increasing the contrast so that the footage would have contrast between some colours included on the footage.

Increasing the saturation of the footage to make it look slightly decolourised, this brought out the eerie atmosphere of the footage.

Adding transactions.

I have used the precision editor so that the transaction included was shown at the right time of where I wanted and also the timing of the transaction.

Editing the photographs on Photo Shop.

By using photo shop, I have edited the appearance of the photograph taken so that there is contrast from black and white.

Decreasing the brightness and increasing the contrast.

Adding a threshold onto the photograph to create the black and white image for my album cover.

Creating the font on for my ancillary tasks.

This website has allowed me to change the colour of the font, the size and the type of lettering in which I want to include for my brand identity.I have chosen this font because in my opinion it reflects the genre of indie punk of my chosen song. It also indicates the quirky style of my chosen band members.

What I found difficult?

• Trying to get the timing right of the lip synchronisation. In some cases, I found that the lead singer sang the song faster or slower then how song was actually played.

• Sometimes the backing sound of the footage kept playing even when I muted it off the clip. I resolved this through sharing the music video file onto the desktop and then I created a new project and imported the shared file onto the new project. From there I was able to mute the whole music video and then add the song in which I haven chosen from an unsigned band called Edelweiss.

Using the internet

I have used the internet to research into the chosen genre of my song “Fiasco by Edelweiss”, this is so that I can get my brand identity right. I have gone about doing this by looking at other successful existing bands such as Two Door Cinema Club and Low Vs Diamond. This enabled me to know and to gain inspiration for my own digipack design and advertisement.
