How does your media product represent

particular social groups?

Different social groups tend to listen to a variety of different music genres. Some of these genres include indie, rock, gothic, R&B and classical for example.

Some people act in different ways to other people, so it is not fair to represent all people in the same way.

The genre of music that people listen plays a major part to a personality. The type of music that they listen to can portray the person to be something that they are not.

My target readers were mid-teens to young adults, so from about 16 to 25 years old.

I researched on various different websites exactly what these ages are stereotypically interested in. After getting an understanding of what they are interested in, I referred back to my focus group and other people who are the same age for specific details about what they like to read.

From this information, I produced a reader profile for the ideal demographic for my magazine – a description of exactly who would be the perfect reader.

After the research and reader profile were completed, I decided on what genre of magazine I wanted to do and that was the indie music genre.

I represented this social group by having an indie-girl as my artist, therefore featuring her on the front cover, contents and double-page spread of my music magazine.

It was obvious she was in the indie genre of people because she was dressed in a summery dress and sitting on a beach. However, she had curly, messy hair with a flowery band.

I have also mentioned indie bands in the magazine such as ‘Bombay Bicycle Club’, and Reading Festival which is known to be indie-rock.
