Bradley Barnes Evaluation - Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Advert: Our advert uses our genre conventions by, having the background of our artists. The background a picture representing our artists as being expressive and out in the open looking out into the ocean, in order to make it seem as if they are waiting for something or for one and other to pose an interesting question which may start to develop their relationship as a couple. We have purposely chosen this image due to the vast amount of connotations in which it possesses towards our target audience of 16-25 year old male and females due to the fact that the beach a connotation of a romantic date setting, where new couples may come in order to express their love to one and other on days out. Below is the original image: We decided to challenge the forms and conventions of our advert by deciding to make our product represent continuity throughout by making the background black and white. The black and white background can pose mystery towards our target audience, by connotation a secret in which are artists are perhaps hiding from one and other. Yet the black and white effect which we have added on befunky.com can also demonstrate the old-fashioned and retro look in which we’re trying to achieve. Therefore, this can be seen as juxtaposing to modern day indie pop music which uses bright colours within their adverts such as Lana Del Rey’s recent advert. Therefore, although both of these popular advert below portray an image of the artist in some way or another it is interesting to see that they both display the artist name at the top of the advert and in capital white letters.

Evaluation - Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Advert:

Our advert uses our genre conventions by, having the background of our artists.

Below is the original image:

We decided to challenge the forms and conventions of our advert by deciding to make our product represent continuity throughout by making the background black and white.

As a group we however decided to challenge this by putting our artist name in the middle of the image (on are artists backs) so that it is personal to them and so that are target audience know exactly who are artists are. Due to the fact that are artists are facing away from are target audience it poses the question as to what the mystery behind them is, is it to do with them being new and not wanting to be drawn into the lime-light too much? We also decided to display a basic square and line pattern around are artist’s band name in order to further reinforce them as artists. Are inspiration behind this came from ‘The 1975’ although again we decided to challenge this by also representing are artists within the same image. Due to the fact that we wanted to show their calming/peaceful vibe in which they connote/give off to their target audience.

We also chose ‘Carbon’ font for our advert to again reinforce continuity throughout our products and decided to include a vintage ‘scratches’ effect upon the image from befunky.com in order for our products to all consist of a similar feel. Therefore, we developed the normal conventions of real media texts by marketing our advert as more personal. Due to the fact that the ‘scratches’ can represent their secret wanting to come out in order for them to fully express themselves to one another. Therefore, overall are advert challenges typical modern day indie adverts due to the old fashion feel in which it contains and due to it listing featuring tracks which will also be on their album. This challenges typical indie advert forms as you’d usually expect to find this upon the back of digipaks. However we as a group wanted to portray this through the media in the form of our advert in order to make are artists seem more unique and individual as a result.
