Rihanna ft. Future- Love Song

• My music video is called Love song by Rihanna ft. Future. My group and I chose this song because we felt it was a simple but also was the type of genre we wanted (r’n’b). We also felt it would be easy to portray Rihanna and her style of dressing.

• Our Music video does not have a clear structure to it, it’s a bit disjointed as flashbacks occur throughout (Non-Linear).

• There is a relationship between the music and the visuals ensuring lip syncing was perfect, Visuals were also aligned together with the music video to show a good flow throughout. This links to Godwin's theory

CameraMid-shots- shows his clothing (which other boys would relate to), body language and facial expression. All performance shots used mid-shots. This was to keep the audiences attention on the artist and the lyrics during performance scenes which we noticed was done in one futures music videos.

The close-up of her looking out in the sunset, represents her thinking about her boyfriend and the good times they had.Using a close up also creates a relationship between the artist and audience so we connect with them. Because future wasn’t the main artist, Close ups weren't used on him, to keep focus mainly on Rihanna the main artist as noticed in my case study ‘we found love’

Also during the party scene in the beginning of the Music video (prolouge), a close up was used to show the boy (future) talking to another girl which wasn’t his girlfriend. This scene is very important as it sets the tone of the whole music video and begins the story. Not many long shots were used as we wanted the attention of the audience to be on the facial expressions and connection between the couple.

Editing Not much editing was used as we wanted to keep our music video simple. Our song is quiet a slow song, therefore we didn’t need a fast cutting rate therefore we used crossfades to represent intensity of the song. After looking at existing products in our genre we noticed that fades were usually used in most.

However in the Party scene (prolouge) in the beginning fast cuts were used to go along with the beat of the song used. Also to show the people dancing and having a good time in between cuts. We also had to unsure the images flowed along with the music and lip syncing.

We also used colour correction where some scenes were black and white to show the difference between our flashbacks and present scenes having seen this in our past case studies. Barthes action codes are spotted my the audience as the black and white footage represents the past showing how happy they were together before the argument in the beginning.

Sound

Due to us doing a music video non-diagetic sound was used thoughout. We used non-diagetic sound in the prologue also as the diegetic sound we used during filming didn’t sound right so stuck with non-diagetic.We also cut the end of the song a bit short as it was a bit long.

Mise en sceneThroughout our music video, the clothing our models wore were very simple and modern as we wanted out audience to relate to their type of clothing. We also followed the conventions of Rihanna's ‘we found love’ music video where she was dressed in similar relatable clothing as well realised in our case studies.

Our location shots were done in, Westfield shopping centre/ car park, lakeside and in the street. We chose to shoot in Westfield as it is a popular place for couple to go together and also it relates to the lyrics when Rihanna says ‘why window shop when you own this. The lakeside also represents Rihanna feeling a sense of loneliness as she thinks about her boyfriend and portrays a softness to her. We took advantage of the lighting in that scene as the sun was shinning bright about to set, which look natural and nice in the camera. Not many props were used in our music video as it wasn’t needed, however in our party scene red cups were used which we noticed were common in existing media videos.

Theory- Todorov

• As a group at the end of creating our music video we realised that we somewhat followed Todorovs theory and his 5 narrative phrases.

• The argument scene in the beginning is the equilibrium which shows something has happened to cause the argument and with this we used non-diagetic sound which was the opening of the song.

• Although we had flashbacks throughout our music video we still wanted to be in chronological order to make sense. E.g

• 1. Party (establishment of problem)

• 2. Argument (Development)

• 3. Reminiscing on the good times (Climax)

• 4. Back together (Anti-climax)

• 5. Happily ever after (Resolution)

On our front cover of the album Rihanna is represented as a strong black woman though the picture we chose. Meanwhile ensuring she has a softness in her facial expression which is why a mid/close up was used. We got this idea from my case studies of Alicia keys album cover.
