Eurotoolbox – What is that?
A handy tool pack for travelling by car in Europe? - an investment package for saving your
hard-earned Euros? - or a free resource for librarians and teachers who need to inspire
children with the latest children’s books in European languages?
If you chose the last of these options you’d be right on the button.
Eurotoolbox is a resource collection which has been put together by Eurolis a group of
expert librarians in the cultural centres of France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland and
Spain with the assistance of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information
Professionals) in the UK.
All the books in the collection have been specially chosen for you, they are the very best
recently published in the following original languages: French, German, Italian, Polish,
Portuguese and Spanish. The English language is represented as well, thanks to a donation
by CILIP of the books shortlisted for the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway children’s books
awards in the current year.
With many years of production experience and feedback from the users, the expert team of
librarians have built a resource which enables librarians and teachers to use over 90 books
in each collection for individual reading or group sessions in their own library or the
schoolroom for a month at a time at no cost to their organization other than onward
transportation to the next location in the UK.

The Little Silver Bell by Maria Lai. Illustrations by Gioia Marchegiani
“ a shepherd who was an early riser, woke up at
sunrise one morning and brought his little goat up on
the mountain. It was a happy departure in order to
contemplate the sky up on the highest peaks and to stay
close to the clouds." In the imagination of Maria Lai the
Sardinian legend of the magic goat that leads the
shepherd to a fabulous treasure has had great
significance. The artist rewrote the tale imagining an
alternative ending to the traditional one. The story that
we present here was born from a mix of different
versions and constitutes a metaphor of the great power
within art. Gioia Marchegiani's beautiful narrative
images, together with the events of the protagonists,
nature and the culture of the island landscape, all
illustrate this.
The author: Maria Lai was born in Ulassai,
Sardinia. She studied at the Venice Academy of Fine
Art where she was a student of Arturo Martini. In the
post war years she began to exhibit her works in
different museums, galleries and Venice's Biennial with
notable national recognition. In her last years Maria Lai
lived and worked in her country home near the town of
Cardedu, where she died on 16th April 2013.

Beyond the Garden by Chiara Mezzalama, illustration by Regis Lejonc
Chiara's father was an ambassador in Tehran during the
years of the Islamic Revolution, in the middle of the war
with Iraq. In a short space of time almost his entire family
joins him: but in the eyes of a child Iran is a distant
unknown country. Feelings, toys, her puppy, her house
with a dream garden represent for Chiara the inside world,
secure and welcoming, but the outside world is a different
story: it is the black city where long bearded soldiers are
armed to the teeth. It is the war that scares her so much
until the day when Chiara's gaze, past the gate, crosses
that of Massoud...

One Hundred Steps to Fly by Giuseppe Festa
Lucio is fourteen and lost his sight when he was young.
He still remembers colours and the form of things but
everything is now enveloped in darkness for him. Lucio
is inebriated by the mountains which he knows more
intimately than he knows his very self. He walks,
clambers up mountain paths with much more
assuredness than many city kids. Precisely is on one of
his trips to The Devil’s Peak in The Dolomites with his
new friend Chiara that the story develops. Here he
meets Zefiro, a young eagle, stolen by unscrupulous
thieves. Everything seems hopeless but the Mountain
pulsates with life and clues which can reveal the real
and true state of things to those, like Lucio, who know
how to listen...A novel which has to be listened to with
all the senses, an experience which permits the readers
to stretch their wings.

What shall we be Then? by Luisa Mattia and Luigi Ballerini
Everything has already happened. Lavinia, fourteen
years old, has attempted to commit suicide. Why?
Falco, the most arrogant between the kids, knows this
all too well: he and a few others, for months have made

They had fun. Not her, who slowly and stubbornly,
recomposes the memory of what has happened. It is a
long and painful process. The desperation that has so
heavily marked her is difficult to defeat. Accounting on
herself is not enough, she will find a new strength thanks
to an actress, a Shakespeare comedy and a boy to fall
in love with trust and joy.

parents will run the decadent Hotel Napoléon, he will go
around recording the sounds of the sea. At least this is the

is she who reveals to him the disturbing disappearance of
a German sailor who lived there. And this is not the only
mystery. Morice and Audrey will soon discover that a dark
secret dating back to the Second World War lingers all over
the small town. The same war in which the Nazi General
Rommel, nicknamed "the desert fox", and Saint-Exupéry,

treasure hunt that has been lasting 40 years and that takes
