Hi, LIMAHL (former frontman of KAJAGOOGOO) has just given thefinishing touch to his debut solo album. There will be a release of hissecond single Too Much Trouble, May 14th. Currently Pretty UMAHL isin Australia, not to get a suntan, but to shoot the video whichaccompanies his single. It will be produced by well-known RUSSELMALCAHY* The 30th of April sees the release of a newly signed actUPTOWN HORN BAND, who emulate from New York. There's also aquiet nice story to it: Their 7" single Effects With My Ex follows the 12"version Sex With My Ex. The 7" title Adaptation has been made to avoidany possible airplay problem. Which seems a wise decision to me!Releases are set for Holland, Germany and France. The band is veryvibrant, who played their debut UK hit to overseas EMI personal atSeptembers Conference. Early this summer they crossed the Atlanticagain to play European dates. Undoubtfully, we'll hear more aboutthem!*Australian group INXS is back in Europe for promotion and concert datesincluding gigs in Germany (plus shootings for Rockpalast 1V), France(plus doing Cadence 3 TV), Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and the UK.Further promotional details will be announced shortly. Their singleOriginal Sin jumped last week from 87 to 75 in the US Billboards Hot 100and is presently at nr. 18 in the Dance Charts.*As announced in the earlier issue. MINK DE VILLE is back in Europe to dous the pleasure of his presence again! With 6 dates already confirmed inHolland alone. WILLIE DE VILLE is doing one performance on specialinvitation by the organizers of the Edison Gala in Holland. His albumWhere Angels Fear To Tread, did not get a nomination but the organizerswere so impressed by his product to invite him as a special guest. It willbe broadcasted by Vara tv*BOBBY WOMACK, is a new signing to MCA. His new album though, hasto wait for its release until the end of this year. His recently in Americareleased album The Poet Two is still not available overherel*TOD RUNDGREN is currently together in the studio with JOE 'SMILEY'JACKSON and DONALD FAGEN, to record an album in honour of a JazzMusician, (now you're all asking his name - I've forgottenl)*

:1:13aNf1 NMOOIn this section we will take a closer look at the Australian charts ascompiled by Kent Music Report (for more information please write to POBox 249, St. Ives, NSW 2075., Australia).

Australia Top 5 Singles:()Nena- 99 Luftballons2. Cyndi Lauper- Girls Just Want To Have Fun3. Thompson Twins- Hold Me Now4. INXS- I Send A Message5. Marilyn- Calling Your NameSo, the Aussies also discovered the impact of Nena, the single is already4th week at the top (German version! in the UK and the US this one hadto be translated to make it digestible for the jocks). I Send A Messagestayed several weeks at the nr. 1 position just like the previous releaseOriginal Sin from this talented band INXS. Marilyn seems to be verypopular, something he (she) never succeeded in, outside of the UK.The fastest moving singles this week in the Australian charts are nearly allvery familiar to us Europeans: Weird Al Yankovic- Eat It (new at 9),Kenny Loggins- Footloose (30 to 13), Nik Kershaw- Wouldn't It BeGood (25 to 15), Culture Club- It's A Miracle (47 to 17), Mel Brooks- ToBe Or Not To Be (new at 42), Redgum- I've Been To Bali Too (this newAustralian band moves from 93 to 44) and Kids In The Kitchen- BitterDesire (Australian band as well, new at 54).Further Australian acts worth mentioning and doing well in the charts are:Cold Chisel- Saturday Night (11), Jane Clifton- Girl On The Wall (14),Real Life- Catch Me I'm falling (19), Mondo Rock- Baby Wants To Rock(20) and Come Said The Boy (at 33), Mi- Sex- Blue Day (24), QED -Everywhere I Go (31), Dear Enemy- The Good Life (46), Split Enz-Message To My Girl (58) and Icehouse- Taking The Town.

ustralia Top 5 Albums:c1. old Chisel- Twentieth Century

.A., The Swing3. Michael Jackson- Thriller4. Elton John- Too Low For Zero5. Dire Straits- AlchemyCold Chisel, an Australian act, who despite a lot of international appealnever broke outside their home market (lust like e.g. Midnight Oil), are thisweek first at the top. Again INXS at the top of the charts and poor oldMichael Jackson should be satisfied with the nr. 3 position.Fastest moving albums this week are: Thompson Twins- Into The Gap(new at 6), the Footloose soundtrack moves from 67 to 23, Sunnyboys(Australian)- Get Some Fun (new at 45), Diana Ross- The Diana RossStory (new 49), Black And White Minstrels- 40 Singalong Hits (new at54) and, due to a very succesful tour we meet the Canadian rockapellaact The Nylons with their critically acclaimed album One Size Fits All at59 (from 93).

TURNTABLE TIPS

Chris Rea - Wired To The Moon- MagnetAn album which could finally establish ChrisRea as an artist who's able to writecommercial songs. For those who likecomfortable soft swinging pop songs this is anabsolute recommendation. The album hasalready yielded the hit single I Don't KnowWhat it Is But I Love It but there are morepotential hits like Reasons and Ace Of Hearts.A very pleasant and enjoyable album.

"..m.0ele SantingDenllis PuAilart

Mathilde Sanfing/Dennis Duchhart- WaterUnder The Bridge- MegadiscMathilde's 2nd album, this time together withDennis Duchhart known through his work witha.o the Dutch group The Tapes. The songs areall very modest in an almost classical setting. The earlier poppy/nostalgic approach hasmoved into one that lacks a bit the commercialimpact her first album had. Very well suited fornighttime play.

Laura Branigan - Self Control- AtlanticAfter two very succesful albums with hits likeGloria and Solitaire, Atlantic boss AhmutErtegun protege Laura Branigan continues inmuch the same melodic and powerful vein.Striking is the European feel which shinesthrough songs like Ti Amo (another UmbertoTozzi composition), Self Control and BreakingOut. This album should have no troublemaking the charts.

ABOUT THE CHARTSTHE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS):In many European countries one chart is recognised by themusic industry as the " OFFICIAL" hitparade and is thereforeused for the compilation of the EUROPEAN TOP1 00. Howeverthere are other countries where various charts are in existenceand often equally important. For these countries we havecompiled a number of these charts Into one representing thesales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives. relevant tothat position. an equal points rating which is in turn multipliedby a factor determined through the latest known salespercentage of total singles (or album) sales which that countryholds in relation to the resit of Europe. There are differentpercentages for singles and alburns. These figures are kindlyprovided on a regular basis by the industry -organisations suchas IEPI-13P -Gallup -Deutsche Phonoverband elc.A EuropeanChart -Committee, with experts from a number of theseIndustry -organisations all overlook the calculation system andwill decide an improvements, changes and updates. For the EUROPEAN TOP 1P0 SINGLES 25 shads are usedfrom 16 countess, for the EUROPEAN TOP 100 ALBUMS 20charts are used from 15 countries.Since the sales percentages of a few countries are too small toget their hits into the EUROPEAN TOP 100 (provided theserecords are not charted in any other terntory). we are alsoprinting a TOP 3 IN EUROPE list each week. The EUROPEAN AIRPLAY TOP 60 is compiled through all ourcorrespondents tips received this weeknieecords of the weekreceive extra paints. The airplay lists of the airplay reportorganisations within some of the European countries are alsoused in the calculations, as well as playlists of major radiostations.riPlease note that not all received tips appear inEurotipsheet but they are all used for the cdoulation of theAirplay Top 60.THE EURCCLIPS LIST shows the music -videos most aired ontelevision throughout Europe in the week prior to publication. Itincludes video-bv.programs and other t.v.shows partly usingvideo's from 14 European countries.

BBC RADIO LONDON - GUY HORNSBYGuy's prime activity during the week is his work as producer for the TonyBlackburn show, one that has now the biggest listening audience duringthe week on Radio London. Besides having its own section in England'sweekly tradepaper Musicweek, the impact of the program can bedemonstrated through the releases in the UK of many of the US ImportRecords. imirrphas been working on the Tony Blackburn show for thepast three years and as a producer was responsible for the change inmusicformat of the program to one that is primarily concerned with souland funk music. The program is broadcasted between 9 and midday, monday to friday.

.Tairay joined the radio 5 to 6 years ago and before that he was employedas a computer programmer. He started a phone-in program and then dida weekend program for 4 and a half years. "Radio was something Ialways wanted to do since I was a kid and in fact can't figure outanything else interesting. Oh..yes, radio could have the power to make orbreak records, but it's never one jock doing it on it's own and in the endit's always the audience that decides".Apart from his connection with the Tony Blackburn show he also no -produces and presents two weekend breakfast programs called"London Today". The music on the show is a mixture of the best of thelatest releases and the current BBC Top 40. London Today is broadcaston saturday and sunday mornings at 8 o'clock, and also contains what'son info, sport and competition.

THE SCANDINAVIAN CHARTSInstead of our weekly correspondent section on Northern Europe we willtake a closer look this week at the combined singles charts from Sweden(Schlager/GLF), Denmark (IFPI), Norway (V.G.) and Finland (Suosikki).Next week we'll have our feature again on the Northern Correspondents.

The Scandinavian Singles Top 20SW-Sweden; D=denmark; N=Norway; F= Finland

1. Radio Ga Ga - Queen - Sw/D/N/Fi2. Relax - Franke Goes To Hollywood - Sw/D/N/Fi3. My Oh My - Slade - Sw/D/N/Fi4. Girls Just Want To Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper - Sw/D/N5. Street Dance - Breakmachine Sw/D/N6. To Be Or Not So Be - Mel Brooks - Sw/D/N7. Beast Of Burden - Bette Midler - Sw/D/N8. Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell - Sw/D9. Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder - Sw/D

10. Against All Odds - Phil Collins - Sw/D11. 99 Luftballons - Nena - Sw/N12. Only You - Flying Pickets - Sw/Fi13. Run Runaway - Slade - Sw/N14. Crimes Of Passion - Mike Oldfield - D/Fi15. Tommy Loves Me - Carole - Sw16. Jump - Van Halen - Sw17. (Feels Like) Heaven - Fiction Factory - Sw18. Sa In Norden - Carola - Sw19. Dance Hall Days - Wang Chung - Sw20. Buster - Nanna - D

Immediately striking when taking a look at The Scandinavian Charts isthe fact that there is amazingly enough no local Scandinavian record that.apart from it's country of origin, also charts in another Scandinaviancountry. All local hits remain local and do not tend to cross over to theother markets in Scandinavia, The only exception to this rule was lastyear's European succes Laidback (remember Sunshine Reggae?), thisone charted not only in it's original country Denmark but also elsewherein Scandinavia. But the song had English lyrics and was therefore easierto chart elsewhere. Most of the singles in the Scandinavian Charts are successes elsewherein Europe apart from e.g. Slade who are very popular with two singlescharted of which Run Runaway is not appearing in the European Top100 Singles. Mike Oldfield's single Crime Of Passion is srREDII doing well

and not appearing anymore in the Euro charts (used to be big inGermany and Italy). Scandinavia is (together with the French and TheSpanish) a bit late in discovering the appeal of Nena, 99 Luftballons is inthe lower regions of the Euro charts. The Flying Pickets' Only You is stillvery popular but for the rest of Europe downgrading the charts. Thoughthere is some consensus in the general single sales pattern for theinternational releases, Finland clearly stands out as different from the restof Scandinavia. Not appearing in the above charts and alreadydisappeared from the Euro charts for a few weeks is the McCartney/Jackson single Say Say Say which is still nr. 1 in Finland and Gazebo's ILike Chopin is doing well in the Finnish charts while the rest of Europehas nearly forgotten this one.We must bear in mind, however, that the single market in Scandinavia isdifferent from the rest of Europe. The overall single sales are relativelyspeaking very low compared to other European markets. In one of thecoming issues we will take a closer look at the Scandinavian albummarket for which the sales pattern doesn't differ that much as the singlesdo.

With regards to the T.V. situation it is rather quiet Up North. The mondayshow "Mandagsborsen" with it's tradional weekly live broadcast from thebeautiful Grand Hotel in Stockholm has had it's last program mid aphland will not return until! end ofAugust. The popular show"Nojesmaskinen" with it's growing array of international artists is due tocome back after the summer. in Denmark the weekly progarm"Eldorado" presented and co -produced by the popular Jurgen Mylius isfaking a break till september. Norwegian program "Zikk Zakk" producedby Odd Arvid Stroemstad wit be off the air soon. And what aboutFinland? The monthly pop program "Casino" (producer Heikki Karma)has planned to return after the summer, but when is unknown as of yet. This means that our weekly T.V. section will not feature Scandinavia until)the end of the summer period.
