On behalf of the 2015 jury, I would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to this year’s worthy recipients of the European Language Label Award and the Language Ambassador Award. These awards identify, encourage and celebrate creativity and innovation in the pursuit and development of plurilingualism.

The European Language Label recognises creativity and innovation in improving the quality of language teaching and learning. It is awarded to projects that use and develop innovative ways of motivating and supporting learners in their language learning. The 2015 winning projects demonstrate creative thinking about language teaching and learning, leading to improved teaching provision and learner achievement. They highlight inspiring initiatives that motivate and support people of different ages and in different contexts to embrace the challenge of learning another language.

To ensure the excellence of each award-winning project, the jury intensively examines the applications, shortlists the projects that meet the Language Label criteria and organises a site visit.

This year the Language Label was awarded to six projects across a wide range of sectors and languages. These award-winning projects provide a potential source of inspiration and motivation for others who teach and learn languages.

The Language Ambassador Award is presented to individuals who have displayed exceptional commitment to the promotion of language learning through their excellent work and projects. The 2015 awards recognise the inspirational efforts and achievements

of three recipients.

Thar ceann giúiré na bliana 2015 ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas ó chroí a ghlacadh le buaiteoirí an Séala Eorpach Teanga agus an ghradaim Ambasadóir Teanga. Is maith atá siad tuillte acu. Leis na gradaim seo sainaithnítear cruthaitheacht agus nuáil i mbun saothar agus forbairt an ilteangachais, agus déantar iad a spreagadh agus a cheiliúradh leo.

Tugann an Séala Eorpach Teanga aitheantas do chruthaitheacht agus do nuáil d’fhonn cáilíocht múineadh agus foghlaim teanga a fheabhsú. Bronntar ar thograí é a úsáideann agus a fhorbraíonn slite nuálacha chun foghlaimeoirí a spreagadh agus tacú leo agus iad i mbun teanga a fhoghlaim. Léiríonn tograí buaiteacha na bliana 2015 smaoineamh cruthaitheach faoi mhúineadh agus foghlaim teanga as a leanann feabhas ar sholáthar teagaisc agus ar ghnóthachtáil an fhoghlaimeora. Díríonn siad aird ar tionscnaimh spreagthacha a chuireann díograis ar dhaoine in aoiseanna éagsúla agus i gcomhthéacsanna éagsúla agus a thacaíonn leo chun tabhairt faoin dúshlán atá i dteanga eile a fhoghlaim.

D’fhonn feabhas gach tionscadail bhuaitigh a chinntiú déanann an ghiúiré scrúdú domhain ar na hiarratais, déanann

sí gearrliosta na dtionscadal a chomhlíonann critéir an Séala Teanga agus eagraíonn cuairt ar an láthair. I mbliana bronnadh an Séala Teanga ar sé cinn de thionscadail thar réimse leathan earnálacha agus teangacha. D’fhéadfadh na tograí buaiteacha seo a bheith ina bhfoinse inspioráide agus spreagtha do dhaoine eile a mhúineann agus a fhoghlaimíonn teangacha.

Teanga.me, Dublin

Teanga is an online picture- and voice-based language learning system. It uses a set of images and symbols common to all languages and dispenses with text, so that students build confidence by focusing on speaking and listening; grammar patterns are absorbed implicitly. Students can use the website autonomously to ‘mash’ picture-words within visually structured language patterns. They can then voice their creations and compare their pronunciation, intonation and stress with those of a native speaker. They can improve their spoken language by rerecording until they sound like a local!

Teanga also allows parents and teachers to participate in their child’s learning experience. After grasping the initial concept of picture phrases, the parent can support the learning experience through ‘learning by doing’. Teachers may find that the shy in their class begin to speak with confidence. The quiet students

who perhaps excel in written exercises can now practise the spoken word effectively. The ‘flipped’ classroom is here!

There are 7,000 languages on the planet. Most of them are not written, but all convey meaning that is essential to humans. Teanga provides a framework upon which all languages can be learned, using a single set of images and symbols.

Pléghrúpaí i dteangacha arna éascú ag piaraíPeer-facilitated discussion groups in languages

School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics, University of Limerick

While practice in using a foreign language is paramount in achieving fluency and accuracy, Higher Education in languages is understandingly limited in the amount of language practice it can offer to its students.

This initiative, developed by a team of language practitioners at the University of Limerick (UL), aims to address this issue by providing peer-facilitated language discussion groups in a systematic manner. For the past three years, groups of native speakers of the foreign languages taught in the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics (French, German, Japanese and Spanish) are recruited every semester through this programme. They receive training before facilitating discussion groups and/or one-to-one sessions. In this specific context, the facilitator is a peer (i.e. a fellow student) who volunteers to guide and support a ‘flowing’ discussion conducted by learners of the facilitator’s native language. The training package prepares the facilitators to select topics relevant to the students’ area of study, to focus on form (grammar accuracy as well as fluency) and to provide constructive feedback to participating students. The

facilitators have the choice to participate on a voluntary basis (in which case they receive a volunteering award and a certificate of participation) or as part of a credit-bearing module. On average, 15 to 20 facilitators are trained every semester and they provide a total of 15 to 20 hours a week of language practice to our students. This innovative project has led to the creation of an additional service in the range of activities already offered by the Language Learning Hub (Self-Access and Resource Centre) and provides an effective and motivating support to language students. Since its inception, it has been widely successful. The number of UL students taking part in the discussion groups has grown steadily and overall the feedback is extremely positive.

These peer-supported activities are beneficial for both language learners and peer-facilitators as they raise student engagement and motivation in an independent learning context; contribute to the integration into the UL community of the Erasmus+/international students participating in this initiative; and lead to linguistic and intercultural exchanges.

SuperHands - Aip Chomharthaíochta do Naíonáin

SuperHands Baby Sign App

SuperHands

Dublin native Miriam Devitt first tried baby sign language - a simple system to allow babies to communicate before they learn to talk - with her own six-month-old daughter Robin, while living in West Clare. As there were no baby sign classes to attend in Ireland at the time, Miriam went on to create SuperHands, which is now Ireland’s leading baby sign organisation. SuperHands published Ireland’s first Dictionary of baby sign three years ago, and have just launched Ireland’s first baby sign app.

Based on a concept that originated in the US in 1986 with Dr Joseph Garcia, baby sign language has become an international phenomenon allowing parents to communicate at a whole new level with their infants before they have learned to talk. Using simple gestures, babies and their parents embark on an entirely new journey of interaction with each other and more importantly, have fun together. Baby sign language can reduce a baby’s frustration, enhance confidence, strengthen the parent-child bond, accelerate speech and reduce temper tantrums.

Using Irish Sign Language (ISL), SuperHands’ app (developed in partnership with Dublin design studio Darling) lets parents start signing on the go. Superhands’ founder Miriam Devitt says, “This is a very exciting time for infant communication in Ireland. The feedback from our courses had been so great that I was keen to expand as quickly as possible. Now parents all over Ireland can experience the joys of signing with their babies with this beautifully designed and simple to use app.”

The app, with clear, colourful pictures showing and describing the signs, has good potential to motivate parents/

guardians to use more sign language with their child… This is a very good, creative use of technology to support

parents/guardians in their efforts to learn signing for communicating with small children. This approach has

been used in other contexts but this is the first baby sign app using Irish Sign Language… It is innovative.

Bua na Cainte - Clár Gaeilge Idirghníomhach

The Educational Company of Ireland

Bua na Cainte is an interactive Irish Language Programme from The Educational Company of Ireland, using innovative digital resources to deliver a new approach to Irish language learning. It addresses the recommendations of the Harris report (2006) and agrees fully with the recommendations of the Primary school Curriculum (1999) and the Integrated Language Curriculum. The programme has three major features - the online feature, the Teacher’s Book and the Children’s Book.

The online feature includes activities, conversations, songs and rhymes, and stories with a high level of animation. Each theme is laid out with accompanying lessons and printable resources: games; rhymes and songs; pictures; cards; puppets; masks; flash cards and activities. All the language samples, along with the words of the rhymes and songs, are available on disc for the teacher. There is a suitable, attractive story at the end of each theme as well as an evaluation for that theme.

A comprehensive book for the teacher is included with schemes for the year and the month, along with recommendations for differentiation and integration. At the beginning of each theme there is a summary of language functions and language samples. In the lesson plans the language functions, language samples, strands and strand units are traced, along with teaching recommendations for the pre-conversation period, conversation period and post-conversation period of the lesson. In addition,, recommendations are made for the evaluation and informal use of Irish during the day at school.

The children’s book includes educational activities strongly emphasising use of the language with these activities. A special feature of the children’s book is that the language for the parent/

Lingua-App

Lingua-App Teoranta

Edel Ní Arrachtáin has worked as a secondary school teacher for 19 years. She was awarded a first class Master’s degree in Nua-Ghaeilge from NUI Maynooth in 2012. During her studies she came up with the idea for an app that would assist the teaching and learning of the Irish language. With the help and support of the Professional Development Service for Teachers, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta and Foras na Gaeilge, Lingua-App was developed for all mobile devices.

Lingua-App is a unique learning tool for teachers and students of the Irish language as well as being an excellent assistant for parents. Using the ‘Target Language’ learning method, the learner may focus on one language at a time.

There are three main sections in the app:

Topics: presents the user with keywords, using pictures and soundsGrammar: demystifies grammatical terms and tensesWritten language: puts the language into practice.

The sections are linked to grammar pages, making it easy to explore grammatical points within the context of the topic.

Although the idea of Lingua-App was initially developed to focus on school-based learning, Lingua-App’s mobility makes learning accessible, wherever the users find themselves. Teachers, students and parents alike are embracing iPad technology and are changing their approaches to learning.

To address the growing interest in Assessment for Learning and peer to peer learning, Lingua-App Teoranta has also produced a number of A3 posters and A4 ‘show cards’ to support the app in the classroom. The posters are laminated and have a plain back so as to become a reusable resource for group work. The back of the A4 ‘show card’ has a selection of commonly misspelt keywords

on it. These are also laminated to endure repeated use.

Hands in Motion

St Mary’s School for Deaf Girls

Enjoying music is no longer just an auditory experience for students in St. Mary’s School for Deaf Girls. At 8.45 every morning in the school, students with various levels of hearing loss (mild to profound/severe) in this unique choir learn music through Irish Sign Language (ISL) - listening, signing, dancing and singing to various songs in harmony.

Songs are translated into ISL and Signed English. Once the signs, lyrics, harmonies, rhythm, movement, facial expression and meaning/emotion are taught, the song is then filmed and available for all students on USB or DVD. hey are then responsible for their own learning at home. The choir has a large repertoire of music ranging from classical and liturgical to Irish traditional and modern music. This has enabled the choir to perform in many national and international musical events, from ‘Feel the Music’ at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, Germany to the ‘Saturday Night Show’ on RTE1.

The choir performs on a par with 2,000 hearing students in ‘Emmanuel’ each year for three nights in The Helix, Dublin.

Students from St Mary’s also teach sign language to Transition Year students in mainstream schools. ’4 Schools 1 Language’ is a unique project that involves 90 students (hearing and Deaf ) coming together to learn ISL and sign a song through ISL. The final film of the song is a true example of social inclusion, as a person watching would not know who is hearing and who is Deaf.

This choir has inspired other Deaf schools in Europe to start Deaf choirs as part of their extracurricular activities. Through ‘Feel the Music’, four Deaf schools merged to perform with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Fifty Deaf children joined together to sign traditional music of their countries in their native Sign Language, and one song in British Sign Language. St Mary’s School says, “It was a sight to behold, watching Deaf children exposed to classical music and performing in front of over 1,000 people who have never met a Deaf person before.”

Learning a foreign language can increase the size of your brain. This is what Swedish scientists discovered when they used brain scans to monitor what happens when someone learns a second language. We know that people who speak more than one language fluently have better memories and are more cognitively creative and mentally flexible than monolinguals.

Canadian studies suggest that Alzheimer’s disease and the onset of dementia are diagnosed later for bilinguals than for monolinguals, meaning that knowing a second language can help us to stay cognitively healthy well into our later years.

Even more encouraging is that bilingual benefits still hold for those of us who do not learn our second languages as children. Edinburgh University researchers point out that “millions of people across the world acquire their second language later in life: in school, university, or work, or through migration or marriage.” Their results clearly show that knowing another language is advantageous, regardless of when you learn it.

Maurizio Pittau is the founder of Radio Dublino, the first and only radio programme in Italian in Ireland. Maurizio was born and raised in Sardinia, Italy.

He holds a degree in Economics from the Università di Cagliari (Italy), a diploma in International Relations from the Italian Society for International Organization in Rome and a Master in Marketing and International Business from the MIP - School of Management, Politecnico di Milano.

During his university years, Maurizio was involved as a Marketing Executive with the international student organisation AIESEC and was President of the drama group Teatro Utopie. As a result of his involvement in drama, he published ’Drama as Utopia - Games, Role-plays and Drama Activities for Social Change’ in 1999.

Attracted by alternative ways of living, he spent a year travelling around eco-villages in Europe and in 2003 published ‘Economies without money - the local exchange trading systems in the market economy’, a book on economic systems based on non-monetary exchanges. After further experience in journalism and international cooperation projects in Italy and abroad, he moved to Ireland where he now works as a Marketing Manager.

In 2013, his interest in arts and culture led him to found Radio Dublino, a programme with the aim of encouraging integration of the Italian community in Dublin/Ireland and stimulating Irish speakers of Italian to keep up to date with Italian language and civilisation.

The programme also aims at being socially inclusive by encouraging the active involvement and participation of its audience, thus providing a platform where the audience can express their ideas, share projects or promote events. In his programme, Maurizio promotes Italian music, talks in Italian, and interviews Italians living in Ireland as well as Irish people who have a connection with Italy.

Radio Dublino also broadcasts news from the Irish community that may have little visibility in the mainstream media. It promotes local artists and cultural events, and gives both Italians and Irish an insight into their cultures from the perspective of Italians living abroad.

Loraine studied at the University of Limerick and has a Bachelor Degree in European Studies and an M.A. in English Language Teaching. Her interest in teaching languages began when she worked in the Centre des Langues for Air France in Paris. Since 2004, Loraine has worked as a Lecturer in EFL on Shannon College’s undergraduate BBS/BComm programme in International Hotel Management, and on the preparatory NUI Certificate in English for Business and Hospitality.

While teaching on these courses and conversing with other colleagues in the language department, Loraine identified new opportunities to further promote languages within the college.

Loraine’s successful endeavours to engage language learners and promote languages include a Self-Access Multilingual Multimedia Centre, lunchtime beginner classes for students and staff, a foreign film club, and an active Facebook page ‘Languages at SCHM’.

The Self-Access Multilingual Multimedia Centre, while still in its infancy, has logged over 220 DVDs borrowings by students to

date. It also stores additional English resources in grammar and vocabulary, which are accessed by the Certificate students.

The lunchtime beginners’ classes have proven to be extremely popular with students and staff, and every year the classes are over-subscribed. Even though the foreign film club is a new initiative, it has attracted students to view films in unfamiliar languages. These students have said they like to attend in order to learn more about culture. The ‘Languages at SCHM’ Facebook page is gradually gaining in popularity and reaching a wide audience.

These diverse initiatives have greatly raised the profile and importance of language learning in Shannon College and brought learners of French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and English together in new and engaging ways.

Cé gur tionscnamh nua é an club scannáin iasachta meallann sé mic léinn chun féachaint ar scannáin i dteangacha nach bhfuil ar eolas acu. Dúirt na mic léinn seo gur mhaith leo freastal air chun tuilleadh a fhoghlaim faoi chultúr. Tá éileamh ag teacht diaidh i ndiaidh ar an leathanach Facebook agus tá pobal mór á shroichint aige.

Mar thoradh ar na tionscnaimh éagsúla seo tá próifíl agus tábhacht foghlaim teangacha i gColáiste na Sionna ardaithe go mór agus tá sé tar éis foghlaimeoirí na Fraincise, na Gearmáinise, na Spáinnise, na Portaingéilise agus an Bhéarla a thabhairt le chéile i slite nua tarraingteacha.

Dr John Bosco Conama is a former Chairperson and an Honorary Secretary of the Irish Deaf Society. He has been involved in many committees and working groups, and has served as a Board member, sub-Committee member and advisor to various state bodies, committees, and NGOs, including AHEAD, Comhairle (now Citizens Information Board), the National Disability Authority , and the Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS).

Dr Conama was also the Chair of the Accreditation Panel for SLIS in 2006 and 2009, where he oversaw the evaluation of sign language interpreters in terms of quality, professionalism and ethical awareness.

He completed a doctorate in Equality Studies at University College Dublin in 2010. Dr Conama lectures at the Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College, Dublin. He was recently returned to the board of directors of the Irish Deaf Society.

Dr Conama has been heavily involved in promoting Irish Sign Language (ISL) for the last 25 years. He has played a central role in lobbying and campaigning to obtain legal status for ISL for the Deaf community within professional groups and academia, both

through his work as a researcher and as a lecturer to Deaf and hearing students.

He has been an advocate for the Deaf community to political representatives in the Dáil, Seanad and local authorities; to state bodies and NGOs; and to organisations in other countries. His work has been instrumental in raising the profile of ISL and its recognition as a distinct, living, rich and full language of Ireland.

His work in the Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) has been groundbreaking. His list of publications forms a considerable portion of Ireland’s Deaf Studies literature, and his input to professional training programmes has ensured that language professionals working in and for the Deaf community are reflexive and ethically aware practitioners. So far close to 100 qualified ISL/English interpreters have graduated from the CDS.

Dr Conama has worked tirelessly in a voluntary capacity on many issues relating to ISL. His passion in the area of ISL recognition has reaped huge benefits for the Deaf community.

Bhí baint aige le mórán coistí agus grúpaí oibre agus d’fhóin sé mar bhall Boird, ball fochoiste agus comhairleoir do chomhlachtaí stáit éagsúla, coistí agus eagraíochtaí neamhrialtasacha lena n-áirítear AHEAD, Comhairle (ar a dtugtar an Bord Eolais do Shaoránaigh anois), an tÚdarás Náisiúnta Míchumais agus an tSeirbhís Ateangaireachta do Theanga Chomharthaíochta (SLIS).

De bhreis air seo bhí an Dr Conama ina chathaoirleach ar an bPainéal Creidiúnaithe de chuid SLIS in 2006 agus 2009, áit a ndearna sé maoirseacht ar mheasúnú ateangairí teanga comharthaíochta i dtaobh cáilíochta, gairmiúlachta agus feasachta eiticiúla.

Chríochnaigh sé dochtúireacht i Staidéar Comhionannais ag Coláiste Ollscoile Bhaile Átha Cliath in 2010. Tá sé ag léachtóireacht ag an Lárionad do Léann na mBodhar, Coláiste na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath. Toghadh sé ar bhord stiúrthóirí Cumann na mBodhar in Éirinn le déanaí.

Tá Teanga Chomharthaíochta na hÉireann (ISL) á cur chun cinn ag an Dr Conama le 25 bliana anuas. Bhí ról tábhachtach aige i mbrústócaireacht agus feachtais d’fhonn stádas dlíthiúil do Theanga Chomharthaíochta na hÉireann a bhaint amach do phobal na mBodhar laistigh de ghrúpaí gairmiúla agus an lucht

acadúil, trína chuid oibre mar thaighdeoir agus mar léachtóir do mhic léinn bhodhra agus dóibh siúd a bhfuil éisteacht acu araon.

Bhí sé ina thacadóir do phobal na mBodhar le hionadaithe poiblí sa Dáil, sa Seanad agus in údaráis áitiúla; le comhlachtaí stáit agus eagraíochtaí neamhrialtasacha; agus le heagraíochtaí i dtíortha eile. Bhí a chuid oibre ina shiocair le próifíl agus aitheantas Teanga Chomharthaíochta na hÉireann a chur chun cinn mar theanga bheo shaibhir iomlán ar leith de chuid na hÉireann.

Tá obair cheannródaíoch déanta aige san Lárionad do Léann na mBodhar (CDS). Is cuid mhaith de litríocht na hÉireann ar Staidéar na mBodhar é liosta a chuid foilseachán agus tá an méid atá curtha aige le cláir oiliúna ghairmiúla ina chúis le gairmithe teanga atá ag obair i bpobal na mBodhar agus ar a shon a bheith ina gcleachtóirí frithluaileacha a bhfuil feasacht eiticiúil acu. Go dtí seo tá céim bainte amach ag 100 ateangaire cáilithe Teanga Chomharthaíochta na hÉireann/Béarla nach mór, ón Lárionad do Léann na mBodhar.

Lá Eorpach na dTeangacha

At the initiative of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated on 26 September every year since 2001.

The day aims to:

• alertthepublictotheimportanceoflanguagelearning• increase awareness and appreciation of all the languages

spoken in Europe• encouragelifelonglanguagelearning.

Throughout Europe, 800 million Europeans represented in the Council of Europe’s 47 member states are encouraged to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school. Linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent, and the Council of Europe promotes plurilingualism all over Europe.

On the day itself, a range of events are organised across Europe: activities for and with children, television and radio programmes, language classes and conferences. National authorities and the various partners are given a free hand to organise activities.

Léargas is Ireland’s National Relay for the European Day of Languages and every year we send out packs with posters, stickers, promotional materials and details of our competition.

Last year we held an ‘Afternoon Tea’ competition, where language learners were invited to create an afternoon tea and document it in the language they were learning. The winners, St. Mary’s College Co. Wicklow, had a Spanish Taster Experience in Cloughjordan House Cookery School.

This year, our competition is called “A Day in the Life of…”. It invites pupils, with the help of their language and history teachers, to choose a person from a period of history relating to the language they are learning and write a diary entry for them.

The winning entry will see pupils and teachers heading off to a chosen European capital to explore the links between languages and history. The closing date for entries is Friday 30 October 2015. For further details see www.leargas.ie/programmes/languages.

Uirlis is ea éagsúlacht teanga chun níos mó tuiscint idirchultúrtha a bhaint amach mar phríomhghné d’oidhreacht chultúrtha shaibhir ár n-ilchríche. Cuireann Comhairle na hEorpa ilteangachas chun cinn ar fud na hEorpa.

Ar an lá féin eagraítear réimse imeachtaí ar fud na hEorpa: gníomhaíochtaí do pháistí agus le páistí, cláir teilifíse agus raidió, ranganna teanga agus comhdhálacha. Fágtar faoi na húdaráis

The ECML is a Council of Europe institution based in Graz, Austria. In cooperation with the Council’s Language Policy Unit, the centre functions as a catalyst for reform in the teaching and learning of languages. It assists its stakeholders in member states in bringing language education policies and practices together.

The centre operates programmes in a four year cycle. The current programme ‘Learning through Languages 2012-2015’ is drawing to a close and the next programme will be ‘Languages at the Heart of Learning 2016-2019’. At the beginning of each programme experts are invited to submit project proposals. They can also submit applications to work on projects in specific areas of interest. Projects that are selected for the programme are given support from the ECML and hold their own workshops. These are opportunities to bring together experts in that area from each of the 33 member states.

The upcoming programme will cover:

• Inclusive,plurilingual,andinterculturaleducationinpractice• Language teacher education in digital literacy and in

innovative learning environments

• Pathways for learning: holistic approaches to learnerdevelopment

Léargas

Léargas is a not-for-profit organisation that manages national and international programmes in education, youth and community work, and vocational education and training. It is wholly owned by the Department of Education and Skills and has been in operation for close to thirty years.

Our programmes focus on co-operation between communities and between countries, and aim to bring an international dimension to the work of education, training, and youth and community organisations.

As well as our language programmes, Léargas manages intercultural programmes such as Causeway and IAESTE, and is the National Agency for the European Commission funded

programme Erasmus+ (at all levels except Higher Education). The National Centre for Guidance in Education is also part of the Léargas network.
