In one of the most stunning Alpine locations, on the high plateau of the Thiersee Valley at an altitude of 900m, a place of unique harmony and wellbeing awaits our guests. 30 years ago, the jewel that is the Sonnhof came into being in the heart of this natural paradise. Always driven by the desire to offer our guests the best, more than just a summer holiday or ski break, we made the full transition to the philosophy of Ayurveda ten years ago. At the Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof we have gently integrated it with our European sensibility. Here in the Tyrolean Alps, guests experience the power of Ayurvedic philosophy without having to travel to the birthplace of Ayurveda on the Indian subcontinent. Our Indian Ayurveda specialists, Gaurav Sharma and Chef de Cuisine Balvinder Walia, work with GP & naturopath Dr Alaettin Sinop to ensure that you are looked after with competence

and professionalism, as well as promoting a deeper understanding between the cultures of east and west. This year we are also proud to present our latest addition to the Sonnhof family: the Lindhof farm where farmer Christoph keeps chickens and grows

Our design concept is based entirely on the motto ‘Tyrol meets India’. Local timber, some of which is recycled and sourced from ancient hay barns, and other high quality materials create a harmonious synergy with our vibrant Indian colour schemes. Exquisite handcrafted sculptures of Buddha and elements of creativedécor define the ambience. The entire resort was designed on the basis of Vastu Shastra to enable positive energy to flow freely.

The Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof offers a comprehensive programme that ranges from short AyurDetox breaks, intensive detoxification programmes, rejuvenation weeks and Rasayana treatments to Panchakarma – the queen of Ayurvedic treatments.

The idea of ‘Tyrol meets India’ is also at the heart of the design of the AyurvedaCentre. The names of Indian gods were chosen for the treatment rooms – for instance, that of Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty.

Shiva and Shakti set the tone Shiva, the masculine principle, and Shakti, the feminine principle: these two divine powers complement and balance each other in complete harmony, and now accompany you on your journey through our redesigned world of wellbeing. The dual manifestations of the one divine consciousness attend to you as you reconnect with a sense of your true self. In our new Moon Sauna for instance, herbal scents and soothing darkness envelop you as you close your eyes, relax ever more deeply, turn your attention inward and come to rest in a pleasant 50°C. Our 60°C Sun Sauna offers heat and fire: the pleasing scent of honey and the profound power of onyx combine to inspire self-trust and boost vital energy. for especially gentle radiant heat and soothing deep relaxation, we have also installed four new infrared cabins. the garden of five elements

The Sonnhof is in itself a place of spiritual energy. Similar to acupuncture points on a human body, places of spiritual energy are special locations where strong forces concentrate. The Shiva Shakti energy garden was hence designed in accordance with the ancient Indian Vastu Shasta teachings, and is aligned on the principle of the five elements. Within this tranquil garden are several places where the spiritual energy flow is particularly effective. People who enter these places with sensitivity and respect are rewardedby their concentrated energy:

• The rose garden – portal to the path of the heart:

the roses that grow across this area represent unconditional love – the space is all about supporting pain relief and expanding our consciousness of love.

• Ganesha (elephant god) and Buddha:in order to experience heaven in the energy garden, we must first pass the statues of Ganesha (son of Shiva & Parvati) and Buddha.

• Shakti fire place:this is where the feminine aspects of creation make themselves felt in all their intensity. It is a place of transformation that is dedicated to meditation and letting go. The fire in the copper bowl creates the backdrop for intense yoga experiences.

• Chakra spaces:the seven chakra spaces are arranged around the fire bowl in ascending order, from the Root chakra to the Lotus chakra. When we enter these spaces, we access the energy of the chakras and allow it to flow freely.

• Place of bliss:this place of spiritual energy unites all that is intended to be joined. Awareness of divine perfection in creation brings about a state of bliss. Inner peace is found during mountain meditation sessions against the stunning backdrop of the peaks of the Wilder Kaiser.

• Place of the Buddha and compassion: this deeply tranquil space at the centre of the energy garden helps to establish inner harmony.

rEGIonaL HErb GardEn When it comes to food, the Sonnhof really lives up to its ‘Tyrol meets India’ motto. We carefully grow and tend regional herbs in our herb garden and use them in the kitchen to season our Ayurvedic dishes.

Ayurvedic treatments aim to consolidate good health and gently remedy disorders, while at all times focusing on the uniqueness of the person. following a thorough diagnostic test, an individual treatment and nutrition programme to suit your constitutional type is compiled and supervised by our experienced team.

Ayurveda differentiates between three types of constitution, allocating different treatment methods to each type. These regulatory principles are also referred to as the three Doshas and determine our physical, spiritual and mental characteristics. According to Ayurvedic teachings, we are healthy and happy when the Doshas are in harmony with each other.

vaTa. People who are slender, flexible, have a low body mass index, and tend to be constantly on the move are the Vata type. Although they are quick thinkers, they also tend to forget things quickly and are prone to anxiety.

pITTa. Pitta types are of medium build, agile and good at decision-making. They are born leaders who, however, easily lose their temper and are prone to anger.

kapHa. Kapha types are heavyset and take things calmly. Such people keep their head in stressful situations, are easy going and have a tendency towards idleness. Their outstanding characteristics are patience, fortitude and gentleness.

The mastermind and pioneer behind European Ayurveda® was Brigitte Mauracher.Brought up in a nature-loving family, her interest in native medicinal herbs and their effects began when she was just a child. Over 15 years ago she came across Ayurveda and embarked on a thorough study of the subject, eventually becoming a devotee of this holistic

art of healing. Brigitte Mauracher was of the opinion that ‘there is a reason why we have been born in Europe, and we should work with the local treasures that nature has given us’. Her determination, relentless energy and spiritual affinity made her a pioneer in the development of European Ayurveda® and the founder of the Sonnhof’s AyurvedaCentre.

Pulse diagnosis is an essential component and the foundation of many of our treatments.years of experience have taught Gaurav Sharma how to interpret the pulse beat on the wrists and gain valuable information on the overall energetic condition of the body.To do this, he applies his index, middle and ring fingers to the inside of the guest’s wrist, feeling the pulse by applying different amounts of pressure. In addition to pulse diagnosis, the Ayurveda specialist also asks detailed questions about nutrition and digestion, sleeping habits and about life in general.

This information enables him to categorise a person as a Vata, Pitta or Kapha constitutional type and to draw up appropriate individual treatment and nutrition programmes.

It takes into account the principles and recipes of Ayurveda for restoring vital energy balance whilst appealing to European tastes with first-class products, locally sourced from the region’s markets and farms. In addition to classic Indian ingredients such as coriander, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon, European herbs including thyme, basil and fennel are given an opportunity to unfold their healing powers.

Our Ayurveda specialist Gaurav Sharma provides guests on treatment programmes with detailed guidelines for meals. Guests on detox or Panchakarma treatments eat an exclusively vegetarian diet. We can also prescribe medicinal plants to guests with health problems.

Guests on the panchakarma treatment take their main meal at noon – they enjoy a 3-course meal and restrict their evening meal to a light snack.

Guests on the rasayana intense regeneration programme are placed on a restorative Ayurvedic diet.

As soon as the sun rises, farmer Chris plants and harvests the delicacies for the Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof’s take on self-sufficiency. Seasonal vegetables and fruit from the region are served each day: full of precious vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that help digestion, are free of cholesterol, and low in fats and calories. Regional products as a guarantee of deliciously guilt-free flavour. Healthy vegetables, berries, herbs, fresh fruit – indispensable ingredients for wellbeing.

ayurvEda pLuS aCupunCTurE Acupuncture is an ancient treatment method and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The theory of acupuncture is based on the assumption that qi (vital energy) flows through channels known as meridians. Disturbances of this energy flow lead to disease and pain, and can be caused by a number of factors including poor diet, environmental factors, emotional distress and physical strain.

Stimulating acupuncture points with needles, pressure or moxa can remove disturbances in the energy flow. The aim of acupuncture is to achieve health and energetic equilibrium. The combination of Ayurvedic therapy and acupuncture further strengthens the body’s regulatory powers and leads to an enhanced integration of individual treatments.

Vata, Pitta, Kapha – these are the three Doshas or vital energies of Ayurvedic teaching. Pulse diagnosis is used to determine a person’s constitutional type and to detect disorders in the body. This allows the Ayurvedic practitioner to draw conclusions about a patient’s health and wellbeing. According to Ayurveda, we are only healthy and happy when the Doshas are in harmony with each other.

Gaurav Sharma notes:‘nowadays, we see many more vata types, people who are constantly in motion and pitta types, who are prone to anger. The reason for this lies in the extreme busyness of everyday life, especially at work, although the increased heat produced by global warming is also leading to an upsurge in pitta types.’

Based on a guest’s constitutional type, we draw up an appropriate individual treatment and nutrition programme.Pulse diagnosis for all Panchakarma treatments is carried out by Gaurav Sharma. Thanks to many years of experience in this field, he is able to interpret the pulse beat on both wrists and gain valuable information on the overall energetic condition of the body. To do this, he applies his index, middle and ring fingers to the inside of each wrist, feeling the pulse by applying different amounts of pressure.
