+Battle of Midway

+

Battle of Midway In early 1942, the Americans had broken the Japanese Naval Code. They knew something was up because a specific identifier was appearing in many Japanese messages – AF – they did not know which location AF stood for. They knew it was a location, but where? In order to find out, the commander on Midway Island was told to send a message that their Water Purification plant was not working. Within days, Japanese coded messages started to state the AF was getting thirsty. By May the Americans knew AF was Midway Island. They were able to prepare for the Japanese attack and win with very little loss.

+WWII & United States

! Though WWII began in Sept of 1939, the US did not officially enter the fight until Dec of 1941.

!  Before this time, despite stating an official policy of neutrality, the US in fact helped the Allied Powers—Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China—by lending money & supplies needed for the war effort through the Lend-Lease Act What do you think this

political cartoon means?

President Franklin D. Roosevelt said,

"December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy," in reference to the attack.

+Fireside Chats

President Franklin D. Roosevelt utilized available media to comfort the nation during a difficult time.

Beginning during the years of the Great Depression, Roosevelt broadcast a series of 37 radio speeches, known as the "fireside chats," between 1933 and 1944 in order to keep the nation informed on a variety of topics.

Dec 9, 1941, Roosevelt gave a radio speech regarding the declaration of war

on Japan and the U.S. entry into WWII. Let’s listen to it now.

+

Executive Order 9066 •  Executive Order 9066 was signed by President

Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. It called for the creation of military zones that could exclude certain types of people. Though the order made no explicit reference to a particular group, it was quickly aimed at Japanese Americans living on the West Coast.

After Pearl Harbor: •  Americans did not trust

Japanese-Americans •  10 Internment Camps

were created across US •  Approximately 110,000

Japanese-Americans were forced to relocate to these camps

+US Economic Impact of WWII

! Entry into the war in 1941 pulled the US economy out of the Great Depression.

! Though government spending during the New Deal of the 1930s helped the economy, it could not compare with the massive flow of spending that started as soon as the United States entered the war.

! The United States began to ration supplies such as gasoline, nylon, rubber, meat, butter, and many other food products in order to conserve these items for the war effort.

+

US Economic Impact of WWII

•  Factories switched from production of consumer goods to production of military goods.

•  Many women entered the workforce for the first time, taking over jobs left vacant by enlisted men who were fighting overseas.

•  “Rosie the Riveter” is a WWII era icon. She symbolizes the millions of American women who worked in heavy industry during this time.

+

The Holocaust "  Auschwitz – largest Nazi concentration and death camp "  Opened in 1940 "  Enemies of the Nazi state were exterminated in gas chambers or

used as slave labor "  Some people were subject to medical experimentation by Josef

Mengele "  More than 1 million people died at Auschwitz "  In January 1945, the Soviet army was approaching and the Nazis

ordered 60,000 prisoners to march. When the Soviets arrive they found emaciated detainees and piles of corpses left behind.
