ENERGY CLUSTER OF EXTREMADURA Location: Badajoz (Extremadura)

Year of creation: 2008

N° of members: 55

Sector of activity: Renowable & energy efficiency, circular economy, bio-energy.

Cluster mission: to promote the technological development of the energy and bio-economy sectors in Extremadura, generating new business opportunities in strategic markets, at national and international level, as well as the development of new industrial innovation projects.

Participation objectives: Extremadura is leading a challenging Smart Specialization Strategy where clusters play a crucial role. Since we are the only remaining less developed region in Spain, our Region is managing a considerable amount of ERDF funds for cooperative R&D and efficient investments. Extremadura Energy Cluster is very eager in participating in this call to strengthen interregional collaboration along similar or complementary smart specialization priorities. Important investment efforts are already in place in Extremadura through ERDF funds and diverse instruments (e.g. EIB, Jessica, Elena, etc.) to promote energy efficiency measures in industries and efficient building retrofitting. These sound business cases could now be transferred to the industrial modernization field, in areas such as resource efficiency and service innovation. The envisaged European co-investments may be a great opportunity to test new financial instruments and convince regional policy makers about the need to consider them while planning their Operational Programmes.
