• The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.

• Language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content.

1. In your preassigned groups, elect one person to be your presenter and one person to be your scribe.

2. Evaluate your given advertisement. Keep in mind the following questions:

1. Which forms of rhetoric are in your advertisement?

2. If more then one, which is most prominent?

3. How do you know what form of rhetoric is being used? Point out specific examples.

4. How persuasive do you think this advertisement is?

3. After ten minutes your presenter will share your findings and thoughts with the class.

Homework

Find an advertisement that has at least two different forms of rhetoric (this can be a video [commercial, YouTube] or a print advertisement.) In a short constructed response answer the following questions:

• Give a quick description of your advertisement.• What forms of rhetoric did you find?• Which is most prominent?• How does the most prominent form of rhetoric work in the

advertisement?• Where is the ethos in the advertisement? (If applicable)• Where is the pathos in the advertisement? (If applicable)• Where is the logos in the advertisement? (If applicable)
