Chapter 1 Installation

This document contains installation instructions for Replicator, on Windows2000 and Windows2003

operating systems. Once you have installed or upgraded the software, refer to the ETERNUS SF Replicator

Adminstrator Guide Windows2000 and Windows2003, for information on starting and configuring the

software.

1.1 System Requirements Before installing Replicator, verify the following conditions on all primary and secondary servers in the

company.

1.1.1 Common Requirements for Windows2000 and Windows2003

The following resources are required to install Replicator on Windows2000 and Windows2003 systems.

For further details regarding the components Pstore and BAB, please refer to [2.2 Components] in

[ETERNUS SF Replicator Administrator Guide].

One or more Source systems. These will become the mirroring source.

One or more Target systems. These will become the mirroring target.

(The loopback configuration makes the source system and the target system coexist on one

system.)

LAN or WAN IP network(s) between primary and target systems.

Both the primary and the target systems should use static IP addresses. DHCP or automatic

assigning of IP addresses cannot be used.

A mirroring source (referred to as source partition henceforth) on the source system is

necessary. Moreover the source partition must be on a SCSI/IDE drive which has been

formatted either using NTFS or FAT32.

A minimum of 32 MB reserved physical memory on the source system for principal use by the

Big Aysnchronous Buffer or BAB for Replicator.

Free space of 140 MB is required for the Pstore on the source system. The Pstore must be

created on a partition formatted in NTFS format.

A mirroring target (referred to as target partition henceforth) is required on the target system.

The size of the target partition must be equal to or more than that of the source partition on

the source system. Moreover the target partition must be on a SCSI/IDE drive which has been

formatted using NTFS or FAT32.

A directory for the journal is required on the target system. Moreover this directory should be

on a partition formatted in NTFS.

Replicator supports up to 32 logical groups, and a sum total of 32 target partitions on a system. An

effective means of configuring an efficient system is to create logical groups based on business

applications.

NOTE Please ensure that the Pstore and the Journal directory are created on partitions which are formatted in

NTFS.

NOTE Both the primary and the target systems should have the same operating system and the same versions of

the operating system.

NOTE The primary source partition and the secondary host target partition cannot be a system volume or contain

system page files.

NOTE Both the primary and the target systems should have the same versions/levels of the Replicator.

Page 8: ETERNUS SF Replicator Instllation Guide€¦ · Preface Purpose This manual explains the installation and configuration of ETERNUS SF Replicator (referred to as Replicator) on Windows2000

1.3 Preparing to Install This section describes the steps in planning a Replicator installation.

1.3.1 Backing up the System

Normally, when software or hardware is installed, the system is backed up completely. Please ensure the

same is done before devices are added or Replicator is installed. In case files which cannot be replaced on

the system exist, it is necessary to back up the system before installing

1.3.2 How to Size the System

Sizing of certain components such as the BAB or Pstore should be completely thought out before

starting the installation. The following rules can be helpful when sizing and allocating resources:

Target partitions on the secondary should be at least as large as source partitions. However in

cases of disaster recovery, when the source partitions on the primary are used as secondary

partitions temporarily, it is necessary that the disk sizes must be equal.

To measure the load on the particular system, the performance tool provided by Windows is

used.

Try to collect the following information:

Peak I/O update activity over time. Don’t ignore quarter-end or year-end processing

requirements.

Ratio of reads to writes.

Number of disk blocks updated over a measurable amount of time. This data is especially useful

when determining the appropriate size for the journal file directory on the target system(s), and

the amount of memory for the BAB.

The peak rate of data to be sent over the network and the time for which the BAB will not

overflow in case the network shuts down. If the BAB overflows, Replicator will change to

TRACKING mode, and to achieve data parity between primary and secondary, a differential copy

will be executed automatically.

If possible, perform an iterative implementation on Replicator and monitor operations. Pay attention to

incidents such as network connection being lost, the target system going down, or unanticipated bursts in

I/O activity.

1.3.3 How to Size the BAB

It is recommended that additional physical memory be installed on any source system where Replicator

resides for the BAB. Please note that the BAB uses kernel memory and not the virtual memory.

A minimum of 32 MB of real memory is required on the Primary Server machine. BAB size is set to 64

MB by default, or less if there is not enough total memory, and can be increased or decreased as needed.

If there is a large amount of I/O activity, BAB size may need to be increased.

During installation, selectable BAB sizes are presented in 32 MB increments. The maximum allowed

allocation is 60 percent of the total memory on the Replication Server, with a minimum of 32 MB to a

maximum of 192 MB for systems with 1 GB of memory or less, and 224 MB for systems with up to 2 GB of

memory. The correct size should be determined by the rate and pattern of I/O writes.

Maximum BAB Size

192 MB on a Windows 2000 and 2003 systems with up to 1GB of RAM.

224 MB on a Windows 2000 and 2003 systems with more than 1GB of RAM.

4

Page 9: ETERNUS SF Replicator Instllation Guide€¦ · Preface Purpose This manual explains the installation and configuration of ETERNUS SF Replicator (referred to as Replicator) on Windows2000

A Recommendation for BAB Size

Apart from considerations like available kernel memory or volume of data I/O, the following standard

BAB size can be considered. Please note however that the memory allocated for BAB should not exceed

60% of the available kernel memory on the system.

< If the number of partitions to be mirrored are less than 10> BAB Size = 64MB

< If the number of partitions to be mirrored are more than 10 > BAB Size = 128MB

Other Considerations

Since the BAB stores changes made to the primary data, the following variables are important in

determining the appropriate size:

Amount of data changed during a measurable period of time (burst of data)

Speed of network and how fast entries are removed from the BAB.

How long you can tolerate a network outage.

During configuration with dtcconfigtool, if the dtc driver is unable to allocate all of the requested

memory, a message prompts you to reboot the system. The reboot allows the dtc device driver to obtain

the requested memory. The amount of memory actually allocated to the BAB is shown when the dtc driver

is added to the system. You can also determine this value with the dtcinfo –a command after the driver

has been added.

1.3.4 How to Size the Pstore

The Pstore is a file where the state information, definition of the tunable parameters and the update

bitmap is stored. The minimum size is 17 MB. The maximum size is 140 MB.

1.3.5 How to Size the Journal Directory

To use Replicator it is necessary to prepare a journal directory on the secondary.

What is a Journal Directory?

The journal directory is an area that must be prepared on the Secondary side. For Replicator, in the

following cases, journal files are automatically created under the journal directory:

During Smart Refresh. Journals are created in this case only if the logical group has been set to

use the journal. For further details please refer to [ETERNUS SF Replicator Administrator

Guide].

During Checksum Refresh.Journals are created in this case only if the logical group has been

set to use the journal. For further details please refer to [ETERNUS SF Replicator

Administrator Guide].

In checkpoint ON state.

When Smart Refresh/Checksum Refresh is completed or when checkpoint state is turned off, the

journal files are deleted after the data is applied to the secondary partition.

Hence, journal directory is an area which is used temporarily by Replicator.

In case of using a mode that does not use the journal directory, it is necessary to prepare a journal directory without

fail, because the journal directory may be used to control during checkpoint, though updated data is not stored in it.

5

Page 10: ETERNUS SF Replicator Instllation Guide€¦ · Preface Purpose This manual explains the installation and configuration of ETERNUS SF Replicator (referred to as Replicator) on Windows2000

A Recommendation for Determining Journal Directory Size

Even though the size depends on the amount of data that is updated during the checkpoint ON state, it

is desirable to keep the journal directory area as large as the original mirror disk. If for whatever reasons, it

is difficult to prepare an area of the same size as that of the original mirror disk, then the following is the

recommended size of the journal directory.

In case of using a mode that does not use the journal directory, approximately 10 MB of disk space is

sufficient.

Journal directory size = Original mirror disk size x 0.25

1.3.6 Supported Partition Formats

Replicator uses specific partitions on both the primary and secondary. The possible supported formats

for each partition are described below. Before installing Replicator, ensure that the partitions to be used

have the correct format.

System Partition Format

Local data (Source Partition) NTFS or FAT32 Primary

Pstore NTFS

Mirror Data (Target Partition) NTFS or FAT32 Secondary

Journal Directory NTFS

NOTE In addition to local data, Replicator also copies the size of the partition to the target partition. Due to this

reason even if the target partition is created larger than the source partition, the target partition will, after

mirroring, show the same size as the source partition.
