Buying a new kitchen can be a stressfulexperience. High-pressure sales are followed bylengthy delays, then one of the most used roomsin the home is totally out of bounds for a week ormore.
But customers in the north east have anotheroption. A welcome alternative that is half the costof an average new kitchen, can be deliveredwithin the month, and fitted in as little as a day.
From its showroom in Yarm, Dream Doors Teesidesupplies time and money-saving kitchenmakeovers – as well as appliances and completekitchens if required – all fitted by approved localinstallers. A family-run business owned by Kevinand Katrina Clarke, it is also part of a nationalfranchised network of Dream Doors showroomsthat stretches all the way down to Cornwall.
“Major home improvement projects always seemdaunting,” says Kevin. “But there's far lessupheaval with our kitchen makeovers. For a doorswap we're in and out in a day, and for a facelift, with new worktops and a sink, we'll probablyneed an extra day.
Dream Doors asks for just a 50 percent depositfrom customers on order, and guarantees all itsdoors and work free of charge. Customers alsobenefit from dealing with local business ownerswho are also part of a national brand. “DreamDoors is the UK's biggest name in kitchenfacelifts,” Katrina says. “But unlike other nationalcompanies, customers buy from us – the businessowners – and we know we'll deliver the bestcustomer service.”

Just because this article is aboutVintage Weddings, doesn’t meanthat our gentlemen readers haveto hurriedly turn the page.It takes two to make a wedding,- (well sometimes it takes hundreds,it depends how many friends andfamily you have!)Though thegroom is seen as having asupporting role, it is up to him tomake the bride look good, but it ishis day too.In the last few years Vintageweddings have become bigbusiness, - there are books, blogs, fairs and websites dedicated togiving you style ideas from yourchosen periodPlanning is everything, especiallyif you are doing it yourself, -finding vintage items fordecoration, and need largequantities. Champagne glasses, decorative bone china, vintagetablecloths, and place settings, alltake time to collect, if you are nothiring them. Hunting down theright frock, bridesmaid dresses, stationery etc , needs patience, and time sourcing from theInternet, auctions, charity shopsand vintage shops..The starting point, is deciding on atheme, pick a period or style that
you feel most comfortable with, ifyou are going the whole hog, orjust use accent pieces to “VintageUp” your day. Make sure that theguests know what is expected ofthem too, if the wedding is inperiod, so that everyone can joinin the fun. Who doesn’t lovedressing up? A wedding is a greatexcuse.Nothing can be too elaborate, weird, or wacky! It is a specialevent that will be remembered byeveryone attending forever, andwith the advent of mobile phones, and social media, it can be sharedworldwide instantly.Very often the venue for thereception is a good starting pointin deciding which theme willwork, and whether the ownerswill accommodate your wishes.Church halls, marquees, pub andhotel reception rooms, can all beimaginatively decorated with theminimum of fuss, and maximumof ingenuity, if approached in theright way, to give them a morepersonal feel.Storyboards with ideas taken frommagazines etc, help to decidewhat areas to focus on with regardto the chosen period, - see howother couples have approached
the Herculean task, steal ideasand improvise!Ice cream vans on village greens, fairground rides, old fashionedpub games and amusements arejust some of the possibilities thatare available to hire and add acertain twist to what is a solemnoccasion. The 1950s, seems to have been avery popular choice for stylingwith younger couples, as it has anair of fun, and there are still plentyof original items freely available atlittle cost. Wedding dresses werestylish from this decade, veryflattering., and affordable. Sparklyjewellery, and accessories, areeasy to find.Vintage floral bonechina tea sets can be missmatched, for place settings, usedto put candles in, have jellies setin them etc.. vintage teapots canbe filled with wine…whickerbaskets full of flowers for tablecentrepieces…you are onlylimited by your imagination! It all takes planning, if you are notusing a company who can provideeverything, but doing it yourself ispart of the fun, and makes it amore personal event.www.thestonehouse.co.ukFacebook - thestonehouseemporium.

"We have built up a very loyal client baseover those years and our aim is always to offerthem the best possible customer service toencourage them to return year after year andmany clients have become good friends."
Travel has seen many changes over the 30 yearswith the Internet being the most significant and, ofcourse, the rise of the low cost airlines making iteasier for many people to book their own trips. However, there are just as many who still prefer tolet a reputable, well established and fully bondedABTA member take care of their requirements andas Kyle Travel will only book through ATOLprotected tour operators, you know that yourmoney is safe with them rather than taking the
chance of arranging your precious holidaythrough some anonymous internet company. Also, many of Kyle Travel's bookings are for luxury,tailor-made itineraries which are much moreinvolved and not easy to do online as one mistakecan prove to be very expensive.
Nevertheless, Kyle Travel are not standing still andare about to relaunch their own luxury holidaywebsite,www.unique-holidays.com which, as thename suggests, will be featuring holidays with adifference.

Workcommenced in 1888, and the nameis derived from Lever Brothers’mostpopular brand of cleaning agent,Sunlight. The village contains 900Grade II listed buildings and is aconservation area. Back in April thethree apprentices, two Pauls andTony visited the Bridge Inn at thecentre of the village for their eveningmeal with me (Tony took the photo).
William Lever was a greatphilanthropic entrepreneur whoclaimed that Port Sunlight was anexercise in profit sharing, but ratherthan share profits directly, he investedthem in the village. He said, “Itwould not do you much good if yousend it down your throats in the formof bottles of whisky, bags of sweets,or fat geese at Christmas. On theother hand, if you leave the moneywith me, I shall use it to provide foryou everything that makes lifepleasant – nice houses, comfortablehomes, and healthy recreation.”William Lever personally supervisedplanning the village, built on agreenfield site as the factoryrelocated from Warrington andemployed nearly thirty differentarchitects. Between 1899 and 1914,800 houses were built to house a
population of 3,500. The gardenvillage had allotments and publicbuildings including the Lady LeverArt Gallery, a cottage hospital, schools, a concert hall, open airswimming pool, church, and atemperance hotel, which laterbecame the licensed Bridge Inn.Lever introduced welfare schemes, and provided for the education andentertainment of his workforce, encouraging recreation andorganisations which promoted art,

literature, science ormusic. The historical significanceof Port Sunlight lies in itscombination of modelindustrial housing, providing materiallydecent conditions forworking people, with thearchitectural andlandscape values of thegarden suburb, and ofcourse there was a railwaystation too. Many gardensuburbs and villages haverailway stations at theirheart including Letchworthin Hertfordshire andWelwyn Garden City. Eachblock of houses wasdesigned by a differentarchitect. The backs of anyof the houses cannot beseen, and each house isunique. In terms ofarchitectural features, thereis half-timbering, carvedwoodwork and masonry, pargetting (ornamentalplaster work) moulded andtwisted chimneys andleaded glazed patterns. Some houses were built inFlemish style, with bricksimported from Belgium.
There is a nice tea shopopposite the station with aview down the pleasantstreet to the factory, as thesecond picture shows.

Until the 1980s, allresidents of Port Sunlightwere employees ofUnilever and their families.During this decade thehouses were first soldprivately. If you go, you’llalso have time to visitLiverpool with its array ofmuseums and shops, and,of course, the Beatlesconnection. Not that PortSunlight is without its ownBeatles story: Hulme Hall,Port Sunlight, was thevenue for drummer RingoStarr’s official debut as amember of The Beatles on18 August 1962.
It is also the site of theband’s first ever broadcastinterview. The interviewwas with local disc jockey
