Lubrication—For lubrication specifica-tions refer to the instruction book.
Nonlubricated—Inlet pipe should be ofnoncorrosive material such as alumi-num, stainless steel or plastic. Steelinlet pipe tends to rust because of mois-ture condensation and this rust and scalecan enter the compressor damaging thevalves and cylinder bore. If steel pipingis used a protective coating is requiredon the interior.
To avoid damage to the cylinder bore, due to condensation on the cylinder wallsand eventual rust, the water to the cylin-der jacket should be maintained 10° to20°F (-12° to -7°C) hotter than inlet airtemperature.
Cylinder jackets on units which will standidle more than 36 hours, should beequipped with heaters to hold cylinderwater temperature above the dew point.Cooling water must be shut off on unitsstanding idle. The cylinders are cast ironand may rust if exposed to condensa-tion, which will impair piston ring andwearing ring life.
Use only dry type inlet filters.
Cooling Water should be clean andtreated. Water pressure should not ex-ceed 75 psig (5 bar(e)). For best com-pressor performance incoming coolingwater should be slightly warmer than theambient inlet air to prevent condensa-tion on the cylinder walls and subse-quent loss of lubrication because of con-densate contamination. It is advanta-geous and economical to pass the cool-ing water through the cooler before us-ing it for compressor cylinder cooling.
V-Belt Drives are designed in accor-dance with the V-belt manufacturers'recommendations. Standard sectionsheaves and static-resistant belts areused. Because of the flywheel effectrequired, the compressor sheave is builtaccording to I-R standards, instead ofthose of V-belt manufacturers, and hasa special hub construction to fit our stan-dard compressor shaft extension.
V-belt drive consists of a demountablehub type compressor and motor sheaveand the necessary matched V-belts. Theprices quoted apply only to the compres-sor operating at listed speed when drivenby a motor of rating and speed specifiedas standard.
Belt and Coupling Guards are requiredto protect operating personnel frommoving sheaves, belts, or couplings. The standard guard is fully enclosed andwill meet California, Wisconsin andOSHA codes.
Pressure Relief Valve—Each compres-sor discharge line should have at leastone pressure relief valve of adequatesize, between the compressor dischargeconnection and the first air line valve orcheck valve. The standard air receiverpressure relief valve provides this pro-tection only if no air line valves, checkvalves or coolers are located in the pip-ing between the compressor dischargeand the receiver.
Motor Sizing—Motors used in boosterapplications are sized differently than forstandard applications. Motor sizing mustadhere to the following limitations:
A. Motors rated for 1.15 SF should notbe loaded into service factor.
B. Motors rated for 1.0 SF should notbe loaded to within .85 of the name-plate rating.
Any slight changes in inlet pressure willchange the horsepower requirements ofthe booster and exert excessive load onthe motor.
Coupled Drive—On all coupled driveunits the coupling is supplied by I-R andis suitable for motor drive only. Thecoupling is in accordance with I-R stan-dards and under no circumstances is tobe deleted. Performance is the same asintegral induction motor driven compres-sors at rated speed.
General Arrangement Drawings—Drawings will be mailed from the factoryand sent directly to the customer when:
1. The customer's written order hasbeen received with a list of the num-ber, type, and size of drawings to besent. Also, a mailing address andcontact's name must be included.
2. If the motor slide base is not beingsupplied by I-R, the factory will re-quire a print of the motor or base inorder to supply complete drawings.Any drive details which differ fromstandard must be included in theorder write up.
Pressure Ratings - The listed pressureratings are the maximum for any boostercompressor service and are not to beexceeded under any circumstances.
Maximum and Minimum Speeds - Themaximum speed for any booster, exceptfor any booster using the 7" cylinder, is648 rpm. The maximum speed for any
booster using the 7" cylinder is 600 rpm.
The minimum speed to provide suffi-cient lubrication to the frame with thestandard oil pump is 250 RPM. Forspeeds below 350 RPM, contact RecipMarketing for approval and pricing.
Special Applications - Gases otherthan air, such as nitrogen, inert gasmixtures, and some other gases andmixtures can be handled by the stan-
dard ESV booster compressors. Dis-
charge pressure must not exceed maxi-mum listed pressure. Standard regula-tion, design, and materials of construc-tion must be compatible with the gas tobe handled. Each application must bereferred to Recip Marketing with a com-plete gas analysis.
The material used for the piston, wear, and packing rings is dependent on thedewpoint of the gas; therefore, this infor-mation is required.

FRAMEThe main frame is a one-piece, grey ironcasting, ribbed for strength and designedto support the cyclic stresses of con-tinuous heavy-duty compressor loads. It provides support for the maincrankshaft bearings and contains thereservoir for lubricating oil for therunning gear. The frame is completelyenclosed and sealed by access coverswith gaskets. Dust and dirt (the majorcause of wear) can’t get to the runningparts.
CRANKSHAFT AND COUNTER-WEIGHTOn all machines, the crankshaft is asingle piece, heat-treated steel forging. The design includes integral counter-weights and rifle drilling for pressurelubrication.
FULL-FLOATING BEARINGSUsed throughout the running gear, thefull floating bearings take each majorthrust on a different portion of the shell.Load is evenly distributed all aroundboth inside and outside. Main andcrankpin bearings are a special alu-minum alloy, which has greater loadcarrying capacity, heat conductivity andresistance to scoring than other bearingmaterials. The crosshead pin of theconnecting rod has a full-floatingone-piece bronze bearing. Since allbearings are full-floating design, noadjustment is ever necessary.
CONNECTING RODThe connecting rod is die-forged steelwith rifle-drilled oil passage. The crank-
pin end is split for assembly, held inalignment by two bushings, and securedby bolts, which are wired together. Thebushings prevent incorrect assembly. The crosshead end is solid.
CROSSHEAD AND GUIDEAll units have a one piece aluminumalloy, barrel type crosshead, running inan easily accessible cast iron crossheadguide which is integral with the frame.
DISTANCE PIECEAll machines are furnished with distancepieces to prevent frame oil from enteringthe cylinder. All distance pieces andframe openings have bolted andgasketed covers for access to cross-head, oil wiper rings, and packing.
OIL WIPER RINGSLocated on a partition in the distancepiece between the crosshead guide andpiston rod packing box. The wiper ringsprevent loss of frame oil, and preventframe oil from entering the cylinder.Oil wiper rings are cast iron forboth lubricated and non-lubricatedmachines.
PISTON AND PISTON RODAll pistons are held on the piston rod bya locking nut. Piston rods are carbonsteel. Piston rings and rider ring materialis a special self-lubricating materialspecifically chosen for the application.
PISTON ROD PACKINGThe piston rod is sealed by precisionfloating packing rings. These rings usegas pressure to form a seal. Theyautomatically adjust themselves inoperation, and float with the movementof the rod. Piston Rod Packing ringmaterial is a special self-lubricatingmaterial specifically chosen for theapplication. Metal garter springs, whichhold the assembly together, cannot comein contact with the piston rod because ofbuilt-in wear stops.
CYLINDERCylinder and cylinder heads are waterjacketed. This provides a uniformdistribution of heat for all air passages, valves, and rod packing. All cylinder airand water passages are hydrostaticallytested to 1.5 times the design pressure.
VALVESAll valves are plate type valves withstainless steel seats, plates and springs. Each valve is designed for the specificoperating conditions of the booster, taking into consideration the operatingpressure, temperature, and speed. Eachvalve is designed to attain the optimumvalve lift, spring load, plate thickness, and total valve height.
INLET VALVE UNLOADERSTo unload the compressor while runningand to facilitate starting, piston-typeunloaders hold the inlet valves open. Allinlet valves are equipped with theseunloaders to provide full flow area, reducing unloaded power consumption.
LUBRICATIONPositive pressure lubrication is providedfor all bearings and the crosshead. Oilenters a gear pump from the sump andpasses, under pressure, through anexternally mounted replaceable cartridgetype, full flow filter. The oil then entersthe main bearing on the oil pump sideand is fed through drilled passages inthe crankshaft to the crankpin bearingand main bearing on the drive side. The connecting rod has a rifle-drilledpassage to the crosshead, supplying allload bearing surfaces with oil underpressure.
The oil pressure shutdown switch is setat 12 psig (.08bar(g)) minimum oilpressure at the main bearing on thedrive side.

Thisis accomplished by a pressure switch, which activates a solenoid valve thatsends air/gas to the inlet valve free airunloaders. The motor and compressorrun continuously at full speed, while theloading and unloading is regulated inaccordance with demand. A pressureswitch and solenoid valve are suppliedwith this standard feature.
TWO-STEP AUTOMATIC DUALCONTROL PANELThis panel allows control of thecompressor with a combination ofconstant speed control and auto start/stop. The selection is made with a“manual-automatic” switch.
In the “manual” mode, the start buttonmust be pressed, and the compressorwill start unloaded.
Once the load-delay timer runs out, thecompressor will operate in the ConstantSpeed Control Mode loading andunloading as required. With the selectorswitch in the “automatic” mode, thecompressor will automatically start inresponse to a decay in system pressure.Once the load delay times out, thecompressor will load and unload asrequired. When the compressor un-loads, an adjustable timer monitors thelength of time the compressor isunloaded. If the timer reaches its setpoint without loading, the motor isde-energized, and the compressor shutsdown. The unit returns to the automaticstart mode. The timer which monitorsunloaded operation is adjustable from 5to 60 minutes.
PROTECTIVE SWITCHESIn addition to the standard low oilpressure switch, other protectiveswitches can be provided. A low suctionpressure switch and high gas dischargetemperature switch are recommended.
GAUGE BOARDMounted on the compressor distancepiece, the gauge board includes 2 1/2inch (63.5 mm) liquid filled pressuregauges. Standard gauges are oilpressure, interstage pressure, and finaldischarge pressure.
MOTOR POLICYMotors used in booster applications aresized differently than for atmosphericinlet applications. Care should be takenwhen defining operating conditions, asslight changes in inlet pressure willchange the horsepower requirements, and could overload the motor. Motorsizing must adhere to the followinglimitations:
1) Motors must be sized for themaximum horsepower conditionthat the compressor may en-counter.
2) Motors with a 1.15 service factorshould not be loaded into theservice factor.
3) Motors with a 1.0 service factorshould not be loaded to within .85 ofthe nameplate rating.
