The Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program (ESRP) provides funding

and technical assistance to organizations working to restore shoreline and nearshore habitat critical to salmon and other species in Puget Sound.

ESRP’s funding process begins with locally identified projects, which are then prioritized by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). In partnership, the state Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) requests funding. Following appropriation of funding from the Legislature and Governor, WDFW and RCO coordinate the administration of the program.

The 2017 Prioritized Project List seeks to:

Contribute to Action Agenda for Puget Sound Targets

• Restore and protect 1,201 acres of nearshore and estuary habitat, significantly contributing to the Action Agenda target of 7,380 acres by 2020 set by the Puget Sound Partnership.

• Remove 1.65 miles of shoreline armoring, and protect 1.04 miles of

shoreline habitat, helping to reverse the trend of more armoring installed than removed each year.

Re-build Public Infrastructure• Restore shoreline habitat by building

better roads, bridges, flood protection, and public infrastructure.

• Build resiliency to sea level rise and flood events by improving natural infrastructure, which serve as buffers for coastal communities.

Invest in Puget Sound Economy • Support community-driven project

development by funding at least 17 exemplary habitat restoration and protection projects.

• Create local jobs and economic impact. Every $1 million invested in restoration and protection programs results in an average of 17 jobs and more than $3 million in economic activity.

• Leverage federal funds to complete up to 30 additional ranked projects and alternates.

*If federal and state funding becomes available, and as cost savings are achieved, ESRP funds down the 2017 Prioritized Project List.

**Partial funding is awarded to the Tahuya River Estuary Preliminary Design Project with the $10 million funding appropriation.
