* We remain ever united whoever triesto divide usAnd will cast “Yes” vote

Towards the new nation Will ratify Constitution.

Maung De Doh: Hi, Bagyi Toe and Uncle Myo.Come and take a seat. Where do you come from?

Bagyi Toe: We are at the old age. So, we took a walktogether and held discussions in the morning. And we happened to drop in on you. You arediscussing and writing articles about theconstitution. We have to find someone to chatbecause people by nature want to speak a lotwhen they are old.

Maung De Doh: Yes, it is a pleasure for me to chatwith patriotic and well-experienced elderlypersons who participated in Anti-FascistResistance like Bagyi Toe and knowledgeablepensioners like Uncle Myo.

Bagyi Toe: Well, I noticed some of the persons whotook a walk in the morning listened to the radiofor some news. Some news stories said that somepersons are trying to disrupt the referendum inwhich the draft constitution will be approved. Then, I wonder what politics is. When I wasyoung, I used to do politics. In the Japaneseperiod, I was just a teenager. I joined Asia Youths’Asiayon to participate in the movements. Theywere underground movements for Anti-FascistResistance. When Bogyoke and patriots launchedthe Anti-Fascist Resistance, I joined the resistancetroops. But I didn’t want any titles and medals formy performances. So, I didn’t apply for titles andmedals. I took part in the movements because itwas the concern of the entire people, not becauseI wanted titles and medals.

As far as I am concerned, politics is a verynoble term. Actually, politics is an affair that iscarried in the national interest. I understand so. Ifsomething is done in the national interest, it isnational politics. However, nowadays, the term‘politics’ is wrongly defined a lot. I would say, ifsome groups try for power, saying that they willserve the national interest only after they havecome to power, it is called power politics. If theydeceive the people that the nation will have aprosperous future only after their party has cometo power, and they give priority to their self-interest rather than to the public interest whenthey come to power, it is called party politics. And if they use violence, claiming that the nationwill develop only after the ruling government isremoved through violence, it is called violentpolitics. Indeed, they are seeking self-interests indisguise of national interests. So, as BritishGeneral Lord Mountbatten once said that politicsbecame a haven for waifs and strays. How stupidit was to blast some automobiles of ordinarypeople with the intention of creating public panicfor disrupting the referendum. What is the use ofdoing so for the owners, human society and the

No place for saboteurs in new nation to bebuilt in accord with new constitution

Maung De Doh

State? That is just violence, not politics.Uncle Myo: Yes, Bagyi Toe. In reality, the constitution

is not just for any particular person, organization, party, or group. Frankly speaking, it is not just forTatmadaw government or NLD, either. It is nationalpolitics that concerns the whole nation and entirepeople. The constitution doesn’t concern policiesand political concepts. A constitution is necessaryfor all countries, Socialist, Communist, imperialist, kingdom or feudal. A constitution can be calledsocial contract that prescribes the responsibilities, authority and rights of the people and thegovernment.

If someone puts me a question, is a constitutionessential, I must reply that it is not. But, in the timesof emergency, the people are helpless, and are atthe mercy of the ruling government. If there is aconstitution, every citizen with grievances maysubmit a complaint to the Supreme Court. Thepeople can recall the representative under the rightof recall if they no longer like him. If they assumethat the President or members of the governingbody are incompetent in discharge of duties andcommit corruptions, they can remove them byimpeaching them through the hluttaw concerned. In short, State power can be derived from thepublic, the ultimate owner of State power, onlywhen there is a constitution.

Maung De Doh: I wonder why saboteurs are nothappy with the drive for the approval of theconstitution for entrusting State power to the people.

Uncle Myo: In my opinion, it is because there will beno places for them in the new State. I’m sure thenew constitution is not beneficial to them. So, theydislike it, and they will continue to try to disruptthe process for the approval of the constitution.

As you Ko De Doh once said, the constitutionis a nutrient for a country. In a family, some of thefamily members like very much the meals themother cooks, some like the meals fairly, andsome dislike them. Perceptive children will havethe meals even if they don’t like them much.Negligent ones might turn violent and shout at thedinning table. In the end, they might overturn thetable. Then, their acts cannot bring any benefits tothem and they have intention that others cannothave meals.

Maung De Doh: The new constitution carries a checksand balances system. And there will be Tatmadawmember representatives who will safeguardnational security. So, saboteurs who want to breakup the nation and the lackeys groups of thecolonialists will not be in a position to come topower and do at will even if they come to power.I think therefore they are committing destructiveactivities in order that there cannot be a new

constitution.Bagyi Toe: I think in the process of holding the

referendum, the people will understand morethan ever who are constructive forces and whoare destructive forces. I have witnessed that theTatmadaw government has devoted itself tonation-building tasks at undprecedented levels. In the past, the people of our village in Anyaregion had to spend the whole night to fetch apot of drinking water in handscooped wells inthe dry creek. The villagers could take bath onlyonce or twice a week. They had to feed greenwatermelon to cattle. Now, the people are leadingan easy life due to the tube-wells of theunderground water tapping stations. Now, theydon’t need to be worried about food becausenow they can grow paddy with the use ofirrigation water. Recently, I went to my nativevillage to attend the ceremony to initiate 101children into novices, the situations of the villagewere unlike in the past. Almost all the householdshave a TV and a motor cycle. Unlike in the past, the people no longer need to wait the wholenight to take a Z-craft to cross the river. The newbridge is a magnificent facility. They are tangibleproofs.

The constitution is part of the nation-buildingdrive. I notice the government is taking measuressystematically in this regard. To regain power, the people just need to go to the polling booth andcast ‘yes’ vote.

I have heard of saboteurs many times in mylife. They are committing various forms ofdestructive acts such as blasting trains, kidnapping, collection of distortion money, murder, instigation of riots in rural areas, murderswhen the government’s administrativemechanism is no longer effective, if they are notin a position to commit any acts, they dissuadethe monks from sitting for oral examinations, creation of public panic among the nationalpeople, inventing rumours, spreading slanderousnews stories, detonation of bombs among thepeople, misleading of the people into consideringthat the nation will be in ruin soon. They arecommitting subversive acts, and criticizing thepeople who serve in the national interest.

Now, the constitution is going to be approved.Like the devils that are afraid of voices of recitingKammava, so they are now trying to disrupt theprocesses for the approval of the constitution. However, if the entire national people cast ‘Yes’vote in the referendum, there will be no places forthe evil saboteurs to live.

Study shows tomato dishes protect skin LONDON, 29 April —

British researchers havefound adding cookedtomatoes to the daily dietimproved the skin’s abilityto protect against harmfulUV rays, according to aBBC report on Monday.

Researchers at theuniversities of Manchesterand Newcastle foundadding five tablespoons oftomato paste to the dailydiet of 10 volunteers couldhelp ward off skin damageby providing someprotection against theeffects of UV rays.Damage caused by theserays can lead to prematureaging and even skin cancer.

In a study, the

researchers gave 10volunteers around 55grammes of standardtomato paste whichcontains high levels ofcooked tomatoes and 10grammes of olive oil daily, with a further 10 par-ticipants receiving just theolive oil.

After three months, skinsamples from the tomatogroup showed they had 33per cent more protectionagainst sunburn, theequivalent of a very lowfactor sun cream, and muchhigher levels of pro-collagen, a molecule whichgives the skin its structureand keeps its firm.

The study suggested

the antioxidant lycopene, found at its highestconcentration when thetomatoes have beencooked, was behind theapparent benefit.

“The tomato dietboosted the level ofprocollagen in the skinsignificantly. These in-creasing levels suggestpotential reversal of theskin aging process,” LesleyRhodes, a dermatologistat the University of Man-chester, was quoted assaying. — MNA/Xinhua
