From generation to generation, Belgium’s talented film makers continually earn worldwiderecognition for our cinematic traditions. Belgian actors live in our imaginations; they inspire us, moveus, and make us laugh.Belgian actors have been popular for over 20 years. Yolande Moreau, Cécile de France, Marie Gillain,Émilie Dequesne, Déborah François, Virginie Efira, Benoît Poelvoorde, Olivier Gourmet, Jérémie andYannick Renier, Jonathan Zaccai, François Damiens and so many others have left their personal markson Belgian and French screens. And then, behind those majestic trees are young saplings, full of talent, who are starting to come intofull bloom. A new generation of Belgian actors is carving a path. They are not yet very well known bythe general public: they are just taking their first steps, but they have already gained professionalrecognition. What’s more, six of them have won Magritte Awards in the “Most Promising” category. And since thevoters are professionals within the Belgian cinematic community, this means that they believe in thefuture of these actors and in the important role they will play in the Belgian cinema of tomorrow. This is a true new wave of actors who are starting to spread their wings on screen. Pauline, Ambre,Erika, Hande, Anne-Pascale, Stéphanie, Thomas, Joffrey, Mourade, David: so young, but alreadystarring in at least one feature film, from The Kid with a Bike to The Nun, from The Barons toHeadfirst, and many others to come. This generation of actors and actresses is the future of our cinema and of our creative imaginations. Itis thanks to them that ideas and scripts will become films, travel around the world, and touchaudiences everywhere. They bring imaginary characters to life and without a doubt are great sourcesof inspiration. We love them already, and we are sure that you will soon love them as well. Thank youto La Libre Belgique for greeting this project with such enthusiasm, thanks to MAD Brussels and to Didier Vervaeren for their judiciouschoices, thanks to the Belgian stylists for highlighting the actors so wellin all their diversity, thanks to Serge Leblon for photographing them withsuch talent, thanks to all who made this project possible, and thanks toyou for paying attention.Frédéric Delcor

deep-seated desire and determination to invest fully in their roles.

PS: Pauline Burlet’s schedule, revealed at Cannesthis year in the film The Past, did not allow her toparticipate in our photo shoot. But remember hername too: she is part of that new generation ofBelgian actors that we are introducing here.

STYLIST

DIDIERVERVAERENHis life is all about black, fashion, artsyhappenings, fashion, and more fashion.Didier Vervaeren, graduate of La Cambreand former Artistic Director of Delvaux, is

currently a fashioncurator for MADBrussels, a renownedstylist who runs fromshoot to shoot, and avisiting professor atLa Cambre. DV simplyknows all the keyplayers in Belgianfashion. He was just

one step away from knowing all the keyplayers in Belgian cinema! The universesof fashion and film met in February 2013during the Magritte Awards, where hewas in charge of dressing all thesebeautiful people. He was back again inJune for this group of ten young talentsbefore dashing off to Korea… Becausethis great friend of Axelle Red is alsocrazy about Asia, where he is ofteninvited to visit fashion schools. His blacksunglasses and mysterious air alwaysmake a splash there…

MAKE-UP ARTISTS

The House of Dior requires nointroduction! What is less well known isthat ever since Mr. Christian Diorlaunched his fashion label, the Househas always supported young creativityand talent… Approached for the “YoungTalents” project, LVMH Perfumes andCosmetics instantly expressed interestin being involved with a photo shootthat would combine Belgian fashionand film in one place. Two make-upartists, Inge and Sylvie, set up a cosyand luxurious bubble in the large Action+ Service space, and beautified each ofthe ten actresses and actors with greatprofessionalism, plenty of personalisedadvice, and on top of it all, lots ofsympathy and good humour.

PHOTOGRAPHER

SERGE LEBLONSerge Leblon is a big name in the small, tight circle of art photographers. For thepast 28 years, he has been shootingmostly fashion: for the New York Timesmagazine, Elle US, Vogue Italy, or evenfor L’Officiel, among others… And heloves working with artists like Axelle Red,

CharlotteGainsbourg, orthe star dancerMarie-AgnèsGillot. Hissignature style:dreamy

textures that give rise to mysteriousuniverses, never approaching his modelsstraight-on, and “snapshots” with a trulydistinctive atmosphere! He accepted theoffer to participate in the “Young Talents”project right away, because he lovesfilms and actors. On set… we tip our hatsto his cool attitude: photographing tenpeople at once is far from easy!

Amonth before the casting for Le Gaminau Vélo, I saw an American film (whose name I forget)that showed the back of the set for a film shoot. Itmade me want to discover that world. SEEN IN: On stage:Hairspray, Tom Sawyer, LaMélodie du bonheur. Onscreen: starring in Stefan Liberski’s Baby Balloon, which comes out this fall.AGE: 20. HOWDID YOUR CAREER BEGIN:When I was a kid, my Italiangrand-mother would always sing me lullabies and operatic arias. At aroundthe age of seven, I heard the Queen of the Night’s aria fromMozart’s TheMagic Flute. I copied it exactly. So mymom signed me up for a singing class. On top of that, theatre was a hobby of mine ever since I was six. I wouldalways combine the two disciplines and escape away into musical theatre.ROLE MODELS: Barbara Hendricks, the opera singer, who I was luckyenough to see on stage. And Barbra Streisand, for her career. I’ve seen allher concerts, all her films on video. YOUR FAVOURITE DIRECTOR: TimBurton. I have always admired his films. The first one I saw – and I’ve knownit by heart ever since, both in English and French – is The Nightmare BeforeChristmas. YOUR FAVOURITE FILM:Aside from Tim Burton, it’s BazLuhrmann’sMoulin Rouge, which I re-watch a lot. The colours and the musicare exceptional. And since I am a hopeless romantic, the story really gets me.YOUR DREAM ROLE:One stage, there’s Tracy inHairspray – that one’s done:I’ve played it already! Maria inWest Side Story and Christine in Le Fantômede l’opéra. WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW: I’m in I AmWhat I Am, a show thatI wrote and directed, and which was presented in Avignon in July. Roskam’sBullhead (2010), Amélie van Elmbt’s La Tête lapremière (2011), Frédéric Fonteyne’s Tango Libre(2011), Riton Liebman’s Je suis supporter du Standard(2012). AGE 25. YOUR GREATEST EMOTIONS IN THECINEMA Fellini’s Amarcord, but also the films of PeterWatkins, like La Commune or Punishment Park. Hisfilms are really active for their era; through fiction, they provide a new way to look at real life. Anothergreat shock is Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil, where there

is a real cinematographic language, a poetic voicethrough images. HOW DID YOUR CAREER BEGIN? Atage 17, I left Soumagne High School and I wonderedwhat I was going to do. I wanted to be a journalist. Then all of a sudden, I entered the Liège conservatory!(laughs) There, I became aware of my desire to usestories to tell about the world around us. YOUR ROLEMODEL Ascanio Celestini, the sociologist, anthropologist, author, actor, and director. He’s thenew figurehead in Italian narrative theatre. He createsstories and plays them simply. I was lucky enough to

“For Ken Loach, I would sign in a heartbeat! He puts in frontof his camera exactly what we need to be shown today.”

ErikaSainte

SEEN INMiel van Hoogenbemt’s Filsunique (2010), Philippe De Pierpont’s Elle nepleure pas elle chante (2010), BenoîtMariage’s Cow-Boy. AGE 33. YOURCALLING At the age of eleven, I entered theAcademy of Diction and Oration. It was abit random; I could have just as easilysigned up for music theory. But from thatmoment on, it seemed clear to me that thiswas what I wanted to do, and everythingfollowed from there. After my humanitiesdegree, I registered at the IAD (Institute ofBroadcast Arts). A ROLE MODEL It’s notthat I’m a fan, but the actress who touchesme the most is Charlotte Gainsbourg. Ithink her career path is right and beautiful.MOST INSPIRING DIRECTOR This is acomplicated question, because for me, it’sabout the personal relationship above all. Iwant to work with people, more thananything. So, from the first, it’s a questionof meeting and making contact. AND IF ITALL ENDED TOMORROW I never askedmyself the question. All I know is that Iwould need to find a career where I couldopen up. YOUR MOST RECENT PERSONALFAVOURITE The novel The Art of Joy byGoliarda Sapienza, which is just sublime. It’s the story of Modesta, a woman bornpoor in Sicily in 1900, who lives on theedges of society in the inter-war period. It’sa beautiful life lesson. YOUR TRICK FORRECHARGING YOUR BATTERIES?My trickis my six-year-old daughter. This is adifficult job when you have kids, becauseyou aren’t always at home. As soon as Ifinish a project, I give her my everything.WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW I just finishedacting in the play Skylight in the BruxellonsFestival. I am about to shoot Vincent Stael’sBrabançonne

SEEN IN Olivier Van Hoffstadt’s Dikkenek (2006), Mabrouk El Mechri’sJCVD (2008), Nabil Ben Yadir’s Les Barons (2009), Narjiss Nejjar’sL’Amante du Rif (2011), Pieter Monsart’s Offline (2012). AGE : 32THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER: I started totally at random. I lovedfilms and theatre, I dreamed of them, but when you come from Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, it’s kind of an impossible dream. And then one day, Ipassed by an open garage door, and Amid Chakir from Théâtre OcéanNord came out and told me he was organizing a youth theatre workshop. Iwent in, and it all started from there.MOST INSPIRING ACTORS RoschdyZem is a role model close to us. He proved that he’s capable of playingother roles than just an Arab. His repertoire is vast. Like him, I’m notinterested in being the token Arab. Along the same lines, I really likeLubna Azabal. Through her talent and her work, she has also succeeded inescaping stereotypes.MOST INSPIRING DIRECTOR There are tons. Butyou shouldn’t dream of the Americans too much… to stay within the realmof the accessible, I would say Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes. Theyinspire me because their films are true. They give me hope. I hope that oneday the Dardennes will do a film with a few more Blacks and Arabs, thattheir films will have more colour, because there’s no greater truth thanthat! On TV too, we need more colours, for real. YOUR BESTPROFESSIONAL MEMORY Filming Dikkenek. It was my first time withpeople like Marion Cotillard, Dominique Pinon, Jérémie Renier,… All of asudden, I was in the company of greatness. And it was also a lot of fun onset. There was a great atmosphere. There’s even a follow-up project we’regoing to film soon.YOUR PASSIONS OUTSIDE THE FIELD I love football,I’m a fan of Barcelona. But I’m also a fan of the current Red Devils team:it’s gotten really diverse, and ever since then, they’ve been winning! Thething I care most about, though, is hanging out with my oldest friends, from outside of theatre and film. YOUR DREAM ROLE For the Théâtre duManège, in Mons, I played the lead role Hannibal in July. This is the type ofrole I love: something completely different from me. It lets me get out ofmyself, to leave myself behind and to show what I know how to do.WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW I acted in a few films that are coming outsoon: Pieter Vanhees’sWastelandwith Jérémie Renier, MahmoudZemmouri’s Certifié hallalwith Hafsia Herzi. I’m also working on RoelMondelart’s Plan Bart.

meet him and to be able to write Discours à la nationwith him, which I performed atthe National. He’s spot on. I admire his artistic stance. He is a real source of inspirationfor how to practice my career. MOST INSPIRING ACTORS? For their legend: MarlonBrando, James Dean. But we’re lucky to have a fantastic actor right here in Belgiumwhom I admire for his relationship to the profession and the media, and for hissimplicity: Olivier Gourmet. It’s cool, in this field, to have icons like him. And I tellmyself that one day I might have the chance to work with him. There’s Bouli, too. AndSergi Lopez, who I met on my first film. He’s someone with great integrity as an actor.YOUR FAVOURITE FILM OR BEDSIDE READING I have a lot of favourites. But I wouldsay Borges. I like to read a short story before going to sleep. A well-written story, fiveor six pages long, is an amazing exercise and a wonderful escape.WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW I’m working on a new show with the Raoul Collective, the theatre troupe I’m part of. This will keep us busy for two years. I’m touringDiscours à la nation. And there’s the release of the Sylvestre Sbylle film, Je te survivrai, which I’m acting in with Jonathan Zaccai.

As achild, I took classes in diction, oration, and dramatic arts. After leaving high school, I took 3 years of oratory at theBrussels Conservatory, and then I registered at the IAD(Institute of Broadcast Arts).YOUR GREATEST EMOTIONAS AN AUDIENCE MEMBER I especially remember adance performance by Michèle Anne De Mey, SinfoniaEroica. At intermission, I couldn’t stand up. In theatre,Yzz ! Yzz ! Tout Shakespeare by Charlie Degotte marked mejust as much, as did the production of Sleeping Beauty byPietro Pizzuti in Villers-la-Ville. As for films, StanleyDonen and Gene Kelly’s Singing in the Rain, JacquesDemy’s Peau d’Âne, Milos Forman’s Amadeus. I still watch films likeThe Goonies (which he produced) orHook. When I was little, they inspired me. I said tomyself that making films was just like that, thatyou could fly like the fairies. THE BEGINNINGOF YOUR CAREER? I adored dance, theatre, singing, film. I have to admit that I was quicklydiscouraged by dance. But I still dreamt ofcinema. And I was lucky, because I met EricRohmer. He chose me even though, I admit, Ididn’t really know his films. He was like a kindlygrand-father who opened the doors of cinemato me. He told me I was his newmuse…MOSTINSPIRING DIRECTORS Spielberg alwaysinspired me. I also love Jim Jarmusch’s films. And even though I didn’t love L’Écume desJours, I think what Michael Gondry does isamazing.MOST INSPIRING ACTORS I lovecomedians. Louis de Funès and Pierre Richardare great actors. Comedy is really the hardestthing to do. Closer to home, I admire people likeAlain Chabat and Omar Sy. They touch me andmake me smile at the same time. Plus, they areunpretentious. YOUR PASSION OUTSIDE THEFIELD t’s true that this is a difficult professionthat sometimes turns people into jerks. And, Idare say, even though I love it, it isn’t the mostbeautiful profession in the world. My escape isfantasy, fairy tales. It’s a fascinating culture. I doresearch on it. I meet druids and shamans. A lotof people don’t know that this is still a veryvibrant culture. I’m working on a script about it.For the moment, that’s my great passion. Otherthan that, I cook, I garden. It clears my head.WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW I’m starring in LaPlanète des cons, a comedy written by andstarring Charlie Dupont, which was reallyfunny to film. SEEN IN Patrick Grandperret’sMeurtrières, Sophie Schoukens’sMariekeMarieke, Claus Drexel’sAffaire de famille. AGE 29 ans. ACINEMATOGRAPHIC SHOCK Lars von Trier’s Breaking theWaves. It tookme a day to be able to speak again afterwards. But all of Lars von Trier’s filmshave been shocks for me. It’s a mix of fascination and incomprehension. Idon’t always agree with what he does, but I’m always fascinated.LATESTFAVOURITE FILMNoah Baumbach’s Frances Ha. I really liked this film, itdefines our era so well, and how hard it is for young people to grow up andassert themselves in this society.WHAT FILMWOULD YOUHAVE LIKED TOBE IN? I would have loved to be in David Lynch’s films. Kubrick, too. AndTim Burton. I like travelling through different universes. A FAVOURITEACTOR I loveMichel Simon. AND AN ACTRESS I’m a fan of Cate Blanchett. She’s one of the greatest actresses of our time. She has it all: beauty, talent, the ability to go from one universe to another. A KEYMEETING Forme, itdidn’t all happen thanks to just onemeeting. There were stages, but the firstpeople who gaveme a chance in this career were Sylvie Pialat and PatrickGrandperret. It started with them, withMeurtrières. That wasmy firstimportant work. From then on, I grew up, I met new people whowere alsoimportant. AHOBBY Piano. I love Chopin.WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW I just finished Rosennwith Rupert Everett,Béatrice Dalle and StanislasMehrar. It’s a melodrama, a kind of tragic lovestory – as all love stories are – that takes place at the end of the 19th century. The release date isn’t set yet. I also filmed amedium-length film in LosAngeles,OneMan’s Loss, which will travel to the festivals and thenwill beviewable online.

SIX ACTRESSES, FOUR ACTORS, A RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHER, A STYLISTWHO KNOWSWHAT HEWANTS, TWOMAKE-UP ARTISTS, A HAIR STYLIST, ASTUDIO MANAGER RUNNING EVERYWHERE: THE DAY OF THE SHOOTWASINTENSE FOR EVERYONE. THE TALE OF A SATURDAY FILLEDWITHWAITING,LAUGHTER, AND CREATIVITY.

8:50. Everyone – or almost everyone – has arrived.8:52. Didier Vervaeren, the stylist, is overwhelmed. Used to photoshoots, he was counting on the fact that everyone arrives late. Asusual. Which would have left him the time to unwrap all the newboxes he’s received from the designers’ showrooms.9:02. Everyone is already getting bored. The coffee maker is workingnonstop.9:06. Ambre Grouwels can’t manage to wake up. As for ThomasDoret, it seems like he’s still sleeping.9:08. The only girl full of energy this rainy morning is Erika Sainte, who brought her daughter Hannah and set her up in a cosy littlecorner with teddy bear, screen, and toys.9:10. Perched on a balcony at the other end of the venue, SergeLeblon and his assistant Christian set up the studio.9:11. Sly, the Action + Service studio manager, sets up the pieces ofwood that are serving as a set.9:20. Joffrey Verbruggen lights up at the sight of his buddy MouradeZeguendi, who has just arrived (finally, someone gets here a littlelate!).9:22. The clever one in the group: Stéphanie Crayencour broughtsome work, and is learning a text highlighted in yellow, leaning upagainst a kitchen post. Sweet and elegant.10:00. Pauline Etienne, who has been doing night shoots for days forStefan Liberski’s Tokyo Fiancée, is exhausted. She watches acartoon, sitting on the ground next to Erika’s daughter. It’s like thetwo are the same age.10:05. David Murgia arrive, wild-eyed. He just got off a plane fromMexico, where it is seven hours earlier. Which is to say he isn’t"super fresh". The make-up artists have their work cut out for them!10:20. Hande Kodja, pretty as a picture, starts trying on clothes. Shewants to look “sort of fifties”.10:25. Didier Vervaeren is going crazy. There is clothing everywhere.10:30. One of the make-up artists to Thomas Doret: “Thomas, you’reperfect”. Thomas, devilishly innocent: “Oh? Thanks a lot”. And it’strue, he gives off an air of the “little guy” (he’s the youngest in thegroup).10:45. David Murgia asks the make-up artist if he can take a nap. Yes.If he can snore. No.10:49. Ambre Grouwels is enthusiastic about Didier’s suggestions.11:00. Magazine reading room to pass the time.11:07. Mourade and Joffrey start joking around. And say that theywould really like to be in a film together. A white cop and an Arabcop. It would be called Two Cops in Madou, for example, or (IxellesRoyal) Police Academy.11:15. Anne-Pascale Clairembourg was devoured by mosquitoes onvacation. She hopelessly scratches everywhere.11:17. Hande Kodja puts make-up on her legs with ultra-softbrushes, bet that feels good!11:22. Joffrey tries on Ambre’s dress and runs everywhere with anElvis Pompilio hat on his head.11:23. Which drives DV crazy. Again.11:26. Mourade wears his Les Filles à Papa cap backwards.11:31. Thomas takes pictures with a camera belonging to Johanna, the making-of photographer.

11:46. Cinevox snags the "beautified" actors and actresses forfilmed interviews in a little corner-turned-studio.11:46 (two). We all have to be quiet.11:46 (three). We shut up… but not all of us. Big “shhhhhhhh”severywhere. This will happen again 10 times today!12:00. Stéphanie Crayencour puts on a grey T-shirt with a manwith a moustache and cap. And asks: “Didier, isn’t this you?”.12:01. Didier, who is not a dikkenek, bursts out laughing.12:15. Everyone is hungry.12:22. The little sandwiches disappear in the blink of an eye.Believe it or not, waiting makes you hungry.12:23. “What’s for dessert?” “You’ll see, finish your sandwich…” (Iwon’t give a name :-)).13:25. After hours of beautification in make-up, hair, andwardrobe, everyone is ready.13:30. To the set.13:35. Oh yes, 5 minutes to get 50 metres... but as a group, with aspiral staircase, we have extenuating circumstances.13:40. Serge Leblon, who is not the pushy type, lets the actorsplace themselves.13:45. Didier places everyone.13:47. The atmosphere is pretty calm, they seem almostintimidated.13:50. A bit too calm, according to Joffrey, who starts tellingjokes.14:00.Mourade and David join in. We will NEVER finish. Ambrekids around.14:10. Shoot, shoot, shoot. We discover Serge Leblon’s photoson his computer as he takes them.14:30. Yes, but if there’s just one who’s making a funny face whenthe little bird comes out, we have to… start over. Concentration,boys!14:55. The light is magnificent. We are starting to “get” thisphoto.14:57. Yes, it takes time.14:58. Plus, we have to do the panoramic shot, everyone standup.15:20.Mourade leaves to run off to his rehearsal in Mons.15:21. No one leaves without getting past Check Point Charlie:“OK, you did the group photo. And you had your portrait taken? You did the filmed interview? Fine… You can go”.15:30. The éclairs and other pastries are also devoured. Believe itor not, getting photographed makes you hungry.16:00. David photographs Pauline Etienne with Serge Leblon’scamera, who lets him do it, cool as a cucumber. Pauline loosensup and makes faces.18:20. The last will be the first… hey, who said that before?18:30. Erika Sainte finishes the portrait session. Professional, beautiful, funny.18:45. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, it’s done.18:50. Or almost: Didier will be putting things away for hours.Serge wraps with Christian. And I wash 22 more coffee mugs.19:00.We preselect the photos. There’s some good stuff, baby…n Elodie Weymeels
