In 2012, Espoo is one of the co-hosts of World Design Capital
Helsinki 2012 together with Helsinki, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti.
The official programme for WDC Helsinki 2012 includes around 300 special
events and projects, all of which share the same goal: To find ways in which
design can be used to make cities more functional and better places.
For both residents and visitors.
Design can be old or it can be new. Small or large.
Beautiful or controversial. Visible or invisible. Often
design also serves a social purpose or the public inter-
est. Design can be found in everyday things that
visitors too can enjoy without even noticing:
Freewheeling bicycles, cleverly folded menus,
coffee mugs that sit perfectly in your hand, fully
reclining airplane seats, easy-to-read metro maps,
informative signposting and pleasant ferry terminals,
not to mention buses, trains and trams that always
run on schedule, regardless of the weather.
The WDC Helsinki 2012 programme
includes dozens of events and
exhibitions that are open to the public.
By no means all the events can fit in this
brochure, so visit our website for more
