Critical skill shortage in engineering arena require special investment to develop

high quality engineers with practical skills.

Eskom has the unique opportunity to capture the knowledge from the new-build

programme and various improvement initiatives.

OEM and tertiary institutions locally and abroad are keen to partner with Eskom.

Changing context …

Increase the number of Power Plant industry focused MSc and PhDs.

Ensure South African universities participate fully in transferring and

localizing new technologies currently being offered to Eskom by OEMs.

Ensure South African universities are actively involved in solving Eskom

specific engineering problems.

Leverage the expertise of international universities and utilities.

Gas I: 1040 MW added up to 2442 MW of OCGT

At Ankerlig and Gourikwa sites in the Western Cape.

RTS: 23 mothballed coal-fired units totaling 3800 MW

are Return-to-service (RTS) at Camden (8) , Grootvlei

(6), and Komati (9).

Two large coal-fired Power Stations: 4800 MW

6 units at each site of Medupi in Lephalale and Kusile

with wet flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) at Kusile.

Life extension & pollutant emissions reduction on

a number of the 87 Eskom coal power units and

Koeberg.

Solar 1: 100 MW CSP with binary salt mixture

Near Upington in the Northern Cape

Pumped-storage Scheme @ Ingula (1332 MW : 4x 333

MW) 2 dams, 4.6kms apart at Bedford and Braamhoek in

little Drakensberg

Transmission and distribution grid expansion

Efficiency improvement and smart grid development

Large amount of funds & skills needed to complement the power mix

for which all options are still opened: wind, solar, coal, gas and nuclear.

o Creating a South African Post Graduate Diploma in Power Engineering.
