Background

The eSID3 is the third generation of a small tool that enhances the Saab driving experience in your

Saab 9-3 MY2007-2014 by collecting hidden car data and presenting it to the driver on the built-in

SID (Saab Information Display) located in the instrument cluster.

It's easy to install in the OBD2 socket located under the steering wheel. Since it is controlled by the

steering wheel controls, it is perfectly integrated into the electrical system. Apart from lots of more

information in the display, it is loaded with new features and functions that were never launched by

Saab.

Compatibility

eSID3 is compatible with Saab 9-3 2007-2014 which has the upgraded interior with the SID (Saab

Information Display) located in the instrument cluster below the speedometer.

(For 2003-2006 there is instead the “eSID 03-06”, see http://www.esid.se)

Languages

eSID3 supports the following languages (all built into one software). It has an auto-detect setting

where it will switch to the same language as the instrument cluster if the language is supported

otherwise it will choose English. It is also possible to manually select language in eSID Settings.

• English

• Swedish

• French

• German

Hardware

The eSID3 is completely redesigned from eSID2 and has lower quiescent current (1.8mA) and also

supports:

• Configurable switch input interface

• Configurable 12V output driver for LED or Relay with flyback diode (max 200mA)

• Simplified interface to set System Clock time when using non-OEM radio/Nav.

The new interfaces are used by connecting additional wires to unused pins in the OBD-connector.

The cables needed are sold separately in “eSID3 Cable Kit”.

eSID3 Cable-Kit

The eSID3 Cable Kit is needed for:

• Setting the system clock to make the service interval and timer controlled parking heater to

work, if the car has an aftersales stereo head unit

• Connecting the eSID3 12V controllable output, for instance for a shift-up LED or controlling a

relay (with flywheel diode) and configure the eSID3 when it should be active (for instance

Vehicle speed above 50km/h or when a switch is pressed)

The eSID3 Cable Kit consists of four cables, and they are all intended to be connected into empty

slots in the OBD-connector. All four cables have the correct OBD-terminal in one end.

• Red (Controllable 12V output pin , open on the other end)

• Black (Ground reference to the Red cable, open on the other end)

• Green (Cable for adjusting System Clock. The other end of the cable has already terminal to

fit into an empty slot in the BCM connector. No cutting or splicing!)

• Purple (Cable for the switch input interface. The other end has already terminal to fit into the

IP-switch panel next to the Stereo/Navigation unit. No cutting or splicing!))

User Interface

The eSID3 is primarily controlled using the switches on the steering wheel.

• Start eSID3 by a long press on CLR-switch

• Exit eSID3 or leave sub-functions using short press on CLR-switch.

• Change display functions with INFO Up/Down switches and use SET switch to reset data or to

activate sub-functions

eSID3 does not prevent any warning messages to be displayed to the driver, those will always

have higher priority and the driver can always switch between eSID3 and the normal SID

functionality with the CLR button.

Limitations

eSID3 is well integrated but is still an external add-on system and there are some things worth

knowing.

Long press on CLR resets the Trip Computer

Long press on CLR is normally used to reset trip computer. To inhibit start of eSID3 and reset the trip

computer, choose one of these alternatives:

• Remove the eSID3 (will also reset all collected data)

• Have ignition on, engine turned off and accelerator pedal pressed more than 80% and then

long press on CLR.

• Enter Nightpanel-mode. After eSID3 shows ”Stealth Mode activated”, wait 5 seconds, then

wake up the display with a short press on CLR and finally a long press on CLR to reset trip

computer. When Nightpanel-mode is deactivated, eSID3 will re-activate.

eSID3 loses connection with display unexpected

There are a few and rare situations where the cluster decides to take back the display from eSID3, for

instance when the ambient temperature drops from 4 ºC to 3 ºC or sometimes when the vehicle is

started and temperature is around 3 ºC. In that case it switches to ”Temp” view to inform the driver

that the road could be slippery. There might be other cases as well.

When this happen just wait, eSID3 is still running in the background and will resume control of the

display after less than 10 seconds.

OnStar

On vehicles built with OnStar (USA/Canada/Mexico), the instrument cluster has special functionality

regarding phone steering wheel switches (CALL and CLR).

The eSID3 will detect this automatically and disable the function in the vehicle and instead eSID3 will

emulate the same functionality so that the switches work as intended, i.e. the driver does not feel

any difference!

If eSID3 is to be removed permanently from an OnStar vehicle, the vehicle function needs to be re-

enabled first to enable CALL/CLR switches to work with OnStar. Perform this to re-enable the

function:

• Ignition On

• Engine Off

• eSID3 connected but not active (normal SID active)

• Accelerator Pedal > 80%

• Night Panel activated

If all the above conditions are fulfilled, perform a short press on CALL and the display will light up

(Note! The display will light up even if the conditions are not fulfilled). Then remove the eSID3 from

the OBD-connector. Now the OnStar functionality works again without the eSID3.

Special Features

This is a category of features that doesn’t use the display to show information or is only activated on

the display under certain conditions with the focus of improving and adding additional features to

the vehicle.

12V Output driver

The purpose of this feature is to have a 12V controllable output where the user can configure eSID3

when to activate it. It can for instance be connected to Engine speed and to be used as a fast shift-up

LED, to Reverse Gear and used for reverse camera input on aftersales stereo or connected to a

manual switch input that controls a relay that in turns powers something else (use your imagination).

The different alternatives to control the output driver can be found in “Settings” part of this

document.

If the manual switch input wants to be used to control the output one cable in the eSID3-CableKit is

used for connecting it to the IP-Switch panel. If the Extra headlight switch is not used in the vehicle it

can be used, or if the vehicle has manual transmission the Sport mode switch can be used (which is a

dummy switch without any text on the MT cars). It is also possible to mount the AT version on MT-

cars to get rid of the dummy switch and get the text (they are electrically the same)

IP-Switch connector pinout:

• Pin 10 - Extra headlight switch

• Pin 5 - Sport mode/Dummy switch

Aftersales Radio Control

In Sweden it is quite popular to install an aftermarket stereo together with the Connect2

unit/harness. (Alpine stereo in the picture)

The connection schematic (CTSSA001.2) is this:

It works but there are some irritating limitations:

• The Connect2 unit cuts the power to the stereo when the Ignition Key is turned to LOCK

( which happened every time one stop to drop someone off)

• The Connect2 unit only puts power on the “Reverse” pin on Automatic Transmission cars

( not possible to automatically switch to reverse camera on MT cars)

Page 12: eSID 3 User Guide

With eSID3 the Saab OEM radio connector K14 can be modified so that Connect2 listens to eSID3 on

the normal I-bus instead of the Infotainment bus and the result is:

• The radio will stay on until the key is removed from Ignition Switch Module.

• The reverse pin from Connect2 will work on both MT and AT cars.

• The steering wheel answer/hang up switches will work on some stereos (Pioneer? TBC)

• The radio will only work when eSID3 is connected (Important Note!)

These are the steps needed to install (Or install a switch so it is easy to choose bus)

1. Remove Infotainment-bus cable Pin 13 in Radio connector K14 (Green):

2. Splice new wire from ACC K18, Pin 16 (I-bus) and connect it to Radio K14 Pin13.

Automatic Fog light activation

This function activates the front fog-lights automatically when turning the Main Light Switch to Park

position or/and when activating the main beam. This is configurable in eSID Settings.

Normally the driver needs to manually switch the light switch to ”Park” and then press the fog light

switch. The eSID3 helps with the activation so the driver only needs to turn the light switch to ”Park”.

Note: This function is not possible on US/CA/MX vehicles.

Automatic Hazard activation

This function activates the hazard light automatically if the driver does a hard deceleration a.k.a.

“panic brake”.

Every time the brake pedal is pressed and the speed is greater than 30 km/h, the retardation is

calculated and if it is greater than a defined threshold the car will automatically activate the hazard

lights.

The hazard lights will be deactivated when the accelerator pedal is pressed more than 25% or any

turn indicator is activated.

Note: This function is deactivated if braking starts below 30 km/h or if any turn indicator is activate.

Auxiliary Heater Control

The eSID3 can remotely start the auxiliary heater using the remote control. It is activated using a long

press (more than 6 seconds) on Button #3 or Button #4.

It is recommended to disable Panic

Alarm in a workshop and use Follow-

me-home/Panic alarm button #3

when using this function. On Wagons

it is however possible to use Button

#4, and then press “Lock” when the

heater has started. This is not possible

on Sedan/Convertible as the trunk

jumps up on trunk open command.

When the sequence is activated:

1 Quick double blink on the turn indicators to show that the sequence has been received (let

go of the remote button)

2 Some seconds later, a one long blink to indicate that the auxiliary heater has started

3 One very quick blink every minute while running

The heater will continue running until the timer has elapsed (default 30min, configurable in eSID

Settings) or if the user presses the ”Unlock” button, then it will terminate immediately.

Comfort Mirrors

On vehicles with foldable mirrors, eSID3 can fold/unfold them when the car is locked and unlocked. It

is configurable in eSID Settings if the mirrors shall be folded on short press on Lock button #1 or long

press. This is for instance useful if the mirrors only shall be folded at work but not at home or similar.

The mirrors will fold if the following conditions are fulfilled:

• All doors are closed

• Vehicle is locked with Remote button #1 (single or long press depending on configuration).

• eSID3 has learned the mirror position (mirrors must have been folded/unfolded once

manually after eSID3 has been inserted)

The mirrors will unfold if the following conditions are fulfilled:

• Vehicle is unlocked with Remote (single press) on button #2.

• Mirrors was folded by eSID3 (i.e. not manually using the switch on the driver door)

Parking Assistance

When parking assistance is activated and eSID3 is active, eSID3 will switch to a special view and show

the measured distance and display it in this order:

• Rear Left

• Rear Middle

• Rear Right

Distance unit is meters or feet depending on eSID Settings.

NOTE! The value from the PAS unit is never lower than 30 centimeters (constant beep). The driver

must always ensure a safe distance to other vehicles and objects.

Stealth Mode

When the Night Panel is activated, eSID3 will display the text “Stealth Mode Activated” before

entering Night Panel. When Night Panel is deactivated, the previous used display view will be active.

Welcome Message

eSID3 has a customizable 2-row startup welcome text, shown after the text ”Control OK” when

turning on the Ignition. The welcome message can be configured in the eSID Settings.

Set System Time

This is needed when the OEM radio unit has been replaced and the vehicles battery has been reset in

order to get a working timer controller parking heater and service interval counter.

The eSID3 HW has been redesigned to make this much easier. One cable needs to be added between

the OBD connector and the BCM module (located above the drivers feet, behind the fuse box) and

with the eSID3 Cable Kit the correct terminals in both ends are already in place, just plug it into two

empty slots on two sides (no splicing!), takes no more than 15 minutes to complete. Go to “eSID

Settings” to set the clock and follow the steps on the display.

Turn Signal Three-Blink

When touching the direction indication stalk for a short amount of time (100-500ms), the eSID3 will

give a selectable number of extra blinks in the same direction. If the stalk activation is too long or too

short, the extra turn signals will not be activated. Number of blinks can be configured in eSID

Settings.

If the driver interrupts the Three Blink function by using the stalk in the opposite direction, then the

function is terminated and disabled for three seconds.

Unlock Light

This feature is to activate exterior light when the vehicle is unlocked, which gives a very nice

welcoming visual effect.

Function will activate exterior light if all the following conditions are fulfilled:

• Unlock Light Logic value != 0

• All doors and trunk is closed

• Vehicle is unlocked with Remote (single press)

Function will re-activate normal exterior light if any of the following conditions are fulfilled:

• Any door or trunk is opened

• Vehicle is locked with Remote (single press)

• Unlock Light Time (activation timer) has expired

Unlock Light Logic (which lights to activate, 127 combinations) and Unlock Light Time (5-250 seconds)

are configurable in eSID Settings.

Interval Wiper

eSID3 adds a specialized wiper function that lets the user adjust the swipe interval. This works on

cars with and without rain sensor, and the sequence is:

1. Press and hold down the wiper stalk during an entire “swipe”. This will reset the interval time

2. When there is enough water on the windscreen to swipe again, do a single press on the

wiper stalk (a.k.a. single swipe). Now eSID3 will hold this interval since the first step above.

When the time has been set, the windscreen wiper will continue to run until the driver moves the

wiper stalk upwards into any other position than ”idle” or if the ignition is turned off.

If a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction passes by and totally “splashes” the windscreen, it is

just to activate a single swipe to clean the windscreen and the function is still activate and maintains

the selected interval.

Description

The Engine Control Module measures the actual air mass using a mass (air) flow sensor (MAF), which

is used to determine the mass flow rate of air entering a fuel-injected internal combustion engine.

The air mass information is necessary to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine.

On B207 engines the requested, actual and calculated air mass value is monitored. The calculated air

mass is a backup value that Trionic8 is using from the MAP-sensor. Two values can be seen at the

same time and the percentage difference between them.

Knock/Misfire (B207)

Description

Knocking occurs when fuel burns unevenly in your engine’s cylinders. When cylinders have the

correct balance of air and fuel, fuel will burn in small, regulated pockets instead of all at once. After

each pocket burns, it creates a little shock, igniting the next pocket and continuing the cycle. Engine

knocking happens when fuel burns unevenly and those shocks go off at the wrong time. The result is

an annoying noise and potential damage to your engine’s cylinder walls and pistons.

Misfire is the result of incomplete combustion (or zero combustion) inside one or more of an

engine's cylinders. And to the driver, the problem will usually feel like hesitation, shaking or jerking

when the car is running.

On B207 the counters show accumulated values since the Engine Control Module was last time reset

(battery disconnected)

Description

Misfire is the result of incomplete combustion (or zero combustion) inside one or more of an

engine's cylinders. And to the driver, the problem will usually feel like hesitation, shaking or jerking

when the car is running.

On B284 the engine misfire counters resets after a number of successful combustions (typically

within seconds) and eSID3 presents both the current counter values (all six in one view) and

additionally eSID3 accumulates the counter values so they can be seen at a later occasion (two views,

one for cylinder 1-3 and one for 4-6)

Engine Oil Life

Description

The engine control module does not monitor any direct physical or chemical property of oil, it only

accumulates data from its sensors and the oil’s viscosity, total base number (a measure of remaining

detergency), oxidation level and other factors.

Since the engine control module cannot measure these key properties like a chemist in a lab would

measure them, it estimates oil life based on an algorithm. It track climate, driving habits and other

conditions like idle time, engine temperatures, trip times, engine loads, starts and stops.

When the Oil Life percentage is low it will trigger a Time for Service message on the cluster (at least if

the System Clock is valid, which it might not be with an aftersales infotainment unit)

Diagnostic Group

Read DTC

Description

DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code, and these are codes that can be set inside an ECU (electronic

control unit) in the vehicle if it has detected a fault (short circuit for instance).

This function is only enabled when the vehicle is standstill with engine off and Ignition On.

Compared to a simple OBD-reader, eSID3 reads all trouble codes in the entire vehicle.

The trouble codes state are either:

• (P)reliminary or (C)onfirmed for Powertrain nodes or

• (A)ctive or (H)istory for all other nodes.

‘Preliminary’ is set when a fault is found and if the fault is still present on the next following driving

cycles, then the code will be ‘Confirmed’ and the Engine malfunction indication lamp might lit up

(depends on the severity)

On non-emission related nodes this advanced diagnostic is not needed and they simply set either

‘History’ if there has been a fault but not anymore, or ‘Active’ if the fault is present at this time.

When eSID3 has finished reading all the fault codes, then it will present the number of codes, which

state they are in and in which node. The next step is to use the SAAB WIS (Workshop Instruction

System) program to look up the fault code for that node and follow the fault tracing steps.

In the example above the fault code B305748 is active in node MIU due to the fact the module was

just replaced and has not been added with TECH2.

Torque Factor

Description

Torque factor is only used on B207 engines. The eSID3 uses the air mass signal to estimate the

torque, instead of using the torque signal from the engine controller due to it often being saturated

on tuned cars.

The estimated torque is calculated using:

Estimated Torque = Air mass / Torque factor [Nm]

Typical factor value is 3.1 for gasoline and 2.9 for E85, but may vary. Talk to your tuner.
