LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCISTO PARTICIPANTS IN THE PLENARY ASSEMBLYOF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN UNITY FOR THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECREE

“UNITATIS REDINTEGRATIO”

Your Eminences,Dear Brother Bishops and Priests,

Dear Brothers and Sisters,I cordially greet you all and thank you for this meet-ing, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Decree of the Second Vatican Council on Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio. On that 21st of November 1964 the Dogmatic Constitu-tion on the Church Lumen Gentium and the Decree on Catholic Churches of the Eastern Rite Orientalium Ecclesiarum were also promulgated. These three doc-uments taken together, and profoundly linked to one another, offer the vision of Catholic ecclesiology as it was proposed by the Second Vatican Council. That is why you chose to dedicate your sessions to reflecting on how Unitatis Redintegratio can continue to inspire the ecumenical commitment of the Church in today’s changed setting.First of all, we can rejoice in the fact that the Council’s teaching has been broadly received. In these years, on the basis of theological purposes rooted in Scripture and in the Tradition of the Church, the attitude of we Catholics toward Christians of other Churches and ecclesial communities has changed. The hostility and indifference that dug seemingly unbridgeable chasms and caused such deep wounds are now a thing of the past, while a process of healing has begun that per-mits acceptance of the other as a brother or sister in the profound unity that comes from Baptism.This change of mentality, due to Unitatis Redintegra-tio and to the ecumenical action that followed it, can and must penetrate ever more deeply into the theolog-ical teaching and in the pastoral practices of Dioceses, Institutes of Consecrated Life, Associations and ec-clesial Movements. In all the faithful there must al-ways be a growing awareness of the commitment that implies the will of Jesus expressed in his prayer to the Father on the eve of His Passion: “That they may all be one” (Jn 17:21).This anniversary also invites us to give thanks to God for the many fruits that have been reaped in this half century. In particular, the Council’s recommendation has been brought about, that is, appreciation of how much good and truth there is in the lives of Christians of every community.All this has enabled closer contact with other Church-es and Ecclesial Communities and new forms of co-operation to be developed. Ecumenical translations of the Sacred Scriptures have been very important in this regard. Christians of different Churches and Ecclesial Communities are working together at the service of a suffering and needy humanity, for the protection of human life and its unalienable dignity, to safeguard Creation, and against the injustices that afflict so many people and peoples.As a Bishop of the Church which presides in univer-sal charity, I wish to express my gratitude to all those

who in the course of these 50 years have been lavish in various ways at the service of the reconciliation and the communion among all believers in Christ, par-ticularly to those who have worked in the Secretariat for Christian Unity and in the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. While we give thanks, we must recognize that among Christians, we are still di-vided, and that disagreement on new anthropological and ethical subjects make our journey toward unity more complicated. However, we must not surrender to discouragement and resignation, but continue to trust in God who plants in the hearts of Christians the seeds of love and of unity, in order to confront with renewed momentum today’s ecumenical challenges: to cultivate spiritual ecumenism, to turn to advantage the ecumenism of blood, to walk together on the path of the Gospel.Spiritual ecumenism, which reaches a high point in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, lives and de-velops through countless channels, which truly only the Lord sees, but which we, too, often have the joy of knowing: it is a worldwide network of prayerful moments which, at parish and international levels, spread the oxygen of the authentic ecumenical spirit through the body of the Church; a network of acts, which see us united and working together in so many works of charity; and it is also a sharing of prayer, of meditation and other texts which circulate on the web and can contribute to raising awareness, respect and mutual esteem.With regard to the ecumenism of blood, Unitatis Red-integratio itself invited that we esteem it by acknowl-edging the God-given capacity of our brothers and sisters of other Churches and Christian communities to bear witness to Christ even to the supreme sacrifice (cf. n. 4). There has been no shortage of such witness-es in these 50 years and they continue even in our day. It is up to us to welcome them with faith and allow their strength to impel us to convert to an ever fuller brotherhood. Those who persecute Christ in his faith-ful make no differentiation between confessions: they persecute them simply because the are Christians.In these months, meeting so many non-Catholic Christians, or reading their letters, I have been able to see how, despite the open questions that still separate us, there is a strong and widespread desire to walk together, to pray, to know and love the Lord, to coop-erate in service and in solidarity with the weak and the suffering. I am convinced of this: on a common path, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and learning from one another we can grow in the communion which already unites us.Dear brothers and sisters, 50 years after the promul-gation of Unitatis Redintegratio, the pursuit of full Christian unity remains a priority for the Catholic Church, and thus it is daily one of my chief concerns. Unity first and foremost is a gift of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, but we are all called to cooperate, always and in every circumstance. I therefore thank you for all of your work and, in entrusting you to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I ask you to please pray for me and for my ministry, and I bless you from my heart.From the Vatican, 20 November 2014

Señoras y Señores, Agradezco a todos los líderes religiosos aquí reunidos por su compromiso en favor de los sobrevivi-entes de la trata de personas, y a todos los presentes por su intensa participación en este acto de fraternidad especialmente para con los más sufridos de nuestros hermanos.

Inspirados por nuestras confesiones de fe, hoy nos hemos reunido con motivo de una iniciativa histórica y de una acción concreta: declarar que trabajaremos juntos para erradicar el terrible flagelo de la esclavitud moderna en todas sus formas.

La explotación física, económica, sexual y psicológi-ca de hombres, mujeres y niños y niñas actualmente encadena a decenas de millones de personas a la de-shumanización y a la humillación.

Cada ser humano, hombre, mujer, niño, niña es ima-gen de Dios. Dios es Amor y libertad que se dona en relaciones interpersonales, así cada ser humano es una persona libre destinada a existir para el bien de otros en igualdad y fraternidad.

Cada una y todas las personas son iguales y se les debe reconocer la misma libertad y la misma digni-dad. Cualquier relación discriminante que no respete la convicción fundamental que el otro es como uno mismo constituye un delito, y tantas veces un delito aberrante.

Por eso, declaramos en nombre de todos y de cada uno de nuestros credos que la esclavitud moderna, en término de trata de personas, trabajo forzado, prosti-tución, explotación de órganos, es un crimen de lesa humanidad. Sus víctimas son de toda condición, pero las más veces se hayan entre los más pobres y vul-nerables de nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

En nombre de ellos y ellas, que están llamando a la acción a nuestras comunidades de fe, y sin excepción rechazan completamente toda privación sistemática de la libertad individual con fines de explotación per-sonal o comercial, en nombre de ellos hacemos esta declaración.

A pesar de los grandes esfuerzos de muchos, la es-clavitud moderna sigue siendo un flagelo atroz que está presente a gran escala en todo el mundo, incluso como turismo. Este crimen de lesa humanidad se en-

mascara en aparentes costumbres aceptadas, pero en realidad hace sus víctimas en la prostitución, la trata de personas, el trabajo forzado, el trabajo esclavo, la mutilación, la venta de órganos, el mal uso de la dro-ga, el trabajo de niños. Se oculta tras puertas cerradas, en domicilios particulares, en las calles, en automó-viles, en fábricas, en campos, en barcos pesqueros y en muchas otras partes.

Y esto ocurre tanto en ciudades como en aldeas, en las villas de emergencia de las naciones más ricas y más pobres del mundo. Y lo peor, es que tal situación, desgraciadamente, se agrava cada día más.

Llamamos a la acción a todas las personas de fe y a sus líderes, a los Gobiernos, y a las empresas, a todos los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad, para que brinden su apoyo férreo y se sumen al movimiento contra de la esclavitud moderna, en todas sus for-mas. Sostenidos por los ideales de nuestras confesio-nes de fe y nuestros valores humanos compartidos, todos podemos y debemos levantar el estandarte de los valores espirituales, el esfuerzo mancomunado, la visión liberadora de manera de erradicar la esclavitud de nuestro planeta.

Pido al Señor nos conceda hoy la gracia de conver-tirnos nosotros mismos en el prójimo de cada perso-na, sin excepción, y de brindarle ayuda activamente siempre que se cruce en nuestro camino, se trate ya de un anciano abandonado por todos, un trabajador in-justamente esclavizado y despreciado, una refugiada o refugiado atrapado por los lazos de la mala vida, un joven o una joven que camine por las calles del mundo víctima del comercio sexual, un hombre o una mujer prostituida con engaños por gente sin temor de Dios, un niño o una niña mutilada de sus órganos, que llaman nuestras conciencias haciendo eco de la voz del Señor: “Les aseguro que cada vez que lo hicieron con uno de mis hermanos, lo hicieron conmigo”.

Queridos amigos, gracias por esta reunión, gracias por este compromiso transversal que nos compromete a todos. Todos somos reflejo de la imagen de Dios y estamos convencidos que no podemos tolerar que la imagen del Dios vivo sea sometida a la trata más aberrante.

¡Attention!On November 20, the President announced a new program that will benefit over 4 mil-lion undocumented people nationwide and approximately 150,00 in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Catholic Charities, in partnership with the San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP), has worked for many years to enhance the life of immigrant families in our communities. On that day, we won a big victory!

The two biggest changes are providing pro-tection from deportation and a work permit for undocumented parents with a son or daughter who is a U.S Citizen or Legal Per-mament Resident and the expansion of who is eligible for the same benefits under the pro-gram known as “Deferred Action for Child-hood Arrivals (DACA).

People who are not able to apply for several months, so it is very important that you do NOT give money to anyone who says he or she can help you now. In the coming weeks, Catholic Charities amd SDOP will be hold-ing free information sessions to help you understand this new opportunity, and next year when the government is prepared to ac-cept applications, we will be available to help those eligible to apply for this program with competent, low-cost services.

Caridades Catolicas, en colaboración con el Proyecto Organizado de San Diego (SDOP), han trabajado durante muchos años para mejorar la vida de las familias inmi-grantes en nuestras comunidades.
