e-Learning

Recently, we run in-service course for teachers on: distance education (supported by EU)using: e-learning approach, methodology, toolsto prepare teachers for: LLL

New Technology …

New technology in education – hardware laptop, tablet – mobile computers, mobile phone Interactive White Board Voting (testing) system Wireless access to the net

New technology in education – software CMS: Moodle LMS: Fronter e-portfolio – personal archives, reflective comments

Access to technology is today not restricted to a physical place

New technology …

Development: Ratio: students/computers → 1 what next? Teachers take part in in-service training on ICT in

non-informatics subjects? Generally no effect in the classroom

UK, 2005: estimated that more than 50% of what students are supposed to learn in schools they learn when they are not in school

digital divide in traditional sense also between school and non-school (EU)

Now in schools in Poland:

teachers, students „are looking for technology in schools” – hardware, software, Internet are only available at special places, like computer labs.

Our plan is such that:

Technology is available in all the places where it is needed for students, teachers, head teachers, staff, parents, local authorities.

Technology here is understood as:

Hardware, software, Internet, communication, school and personal resources, data

National initiatives by the Ministry of National Ed.: Hardware (comp labs) sent to schools, In-service teachers’ training Content provider – the same for all schools Computers used mainly in computer labs

eSchool: Computer and network technology and resources

available in all place, where needed by students, teachers, parents, administrators

Teachers’ training integrated with school needs Introduction of a platform (Fronter) as a place for

personal learning and archives of personal resources

eSchool No corelation between school needs and decisions

Information Technology (IT) – first:

as a subject – students learn IT

then:

IT as education technology – – supporting other subjects and activities

IT integrated with other subjects and disciplines –– as a part of almost all disciplines

moreover: IT stimulates development of other disciplines which incorporate changes in IT

Model for IT (ICT) development

Dynamic process of incorporating technology into education systems. Four stages:

Emerging stage – the beginning stage of IT development when schools get new technology; interests in IT

Applying stage – the use of IT in traditional settings, curriculum, classes; IT is mainly added

Integration stage – IT integrated, embedded into subjects, activities, related to real world use

Transformation stage – rethinking and renewing education and school role and organization; development of IT professions

This model is dynamic and applies to each new technology

Four stages with regard to teachers, students and schools development:

Emerging stage, our course for teachers, teachers as students in distance education using e-learning

Applying stage, teachers use what they have learnt with their students; this is the emerging stage for students

Integration stage: teachers design a course integrating traditional approach with e-learning tools and methods (blended approach)

Transformation stage: school as an element of LLL in the society, applying e-learning in distance education

Applying the model to e-learning

New technology and New learning

Old question: how to prepare for the future? – difficult to answer since we do not know the future, especialy related to IT, insted: teach how to learn – do not: exclude, e-

exclude, divide and teach how to built ones own learning (e-portfolio?), and prepare for:

LLL – built „a system” of learners in addition to (or in the place of?) the traditional system

Development of ideas how to prepare in new information and communication technologies, the scope of preparation:

computer literacy – basic computer and net skills fluency with IT – additional skills and

competencies: basic informatics ideas and intellectual abilities (abstract thinking)

computational thinking – competencies built on the power and limits of computing processes

3R (reading, writing, arithmetic) + IT→ 3R + computational thinking

New informatics and ICT technologies
