ES4801 Geology Field Camp in Scotland

Why Scotland?Scotland is the birthplace of geology and renowned for itsgeological diversity. From 3-billion-year-old continental crust, to300-million-year-old sedimentary rocks of ancient orogenicbelts, to 50-million-year-old igneous rocks recording the openingof the north Atlantic Ocean, these will be part of your hands-onexperience. You will gain understanding of processes ofmetamorphism (Barrovian-Buchan Zones), magma mixing andfractional crystallisation (Caledonian granites), map complexfault regions (Moine Thrust Fault system) and documentsedimentary environments of deposition (Carboniferous of Fife).

Why St Andrews? The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is consistentlyranked in the top 5 in Britain and the University places in the top100 worldwide. The School is dedicated to teachingfundamental skills that prepare you in observing, reconstructingand interpreting the geological rock record and the processesthat shaped the evolution of our planet. Our educational ethos isto build self confidence and deliver the foundational skills for youto be competent in field geology for research and employment.

Week 1: sedimentology and stratigraphyØ palaeoenvironmental reconstructionsØ logging (measuring) sedimentary sectionsØ sedimentary facies and facies associations

Week 2: metamorphismØ Buchan ZoneØ Barrovian ZoneØ metamorphic facies

Week 3: mapping a fold and thrust beltØ Moine thrust faultØ imbricates and mylonitesØ Archaean-Proterozoic Earth history

Week 4: igneous rocks and processesØ magma mixingØ igneous textures and mineralogyØ intrusive versus extrusive igneous processes

Independent mapping and Field Conference ProjectØ partnered for safety but done individuallyØ map area could include metamorphic,

igneous and sedimentary terranesØ reconstruct the 3-D geological framework

and interpret a geological historyØ present your findings to the entire group as

part of a field conference ‘workshop’

Week 5 – bringing it all together
