Prestel, ISBN 978-3791372310, 16 pp., $29.95, (Hardback) Here is a great gift idea for both budding and seasoned biologists: A pop-up book! While we might be living in the age of virtual real- ity, pop-up books are still loads of fun and this one is special. The “paper engineer” Maike Biederstaedt has created seven pop-up works using illustrations from Haeckel’s Art Forms in Nature. The illustrations chosen, all marine invertebrates and protists, are a selection of some of Haeckel’s most spectacular artworks. She chose from among the Sea Anemones, the Ascidians, the Cephalopods, the Discomedusae, the Ammonitida, the Cyrtoidea (radiolarians), and the Sea Stars. Purist will notice that the pages are not exact duplicates. Some artistic license has been taken with marvelous results. Below are illustrations of four of the seven double page pop-ups; rest assured, the three not shown are equally nice. The book really is a delight! A single cautionary note: it is not destined for toddlers as curious little hands can quickly destroy the paper works. Reviewed by John R. Dolan, Sorbonne Universités, UPMC Univ.
