Partnership in education, particularly within higher education, is one of the key features towards sustainable development. In recent years, bilateral relation focused upon and funding in terms of education and training has risen in Eritrea. The Finland-Eritrea partnership is one of the many example of educational collaboration witnessed in the country. Many teachers from a number of countries, including Sudan, India, Japan, Kenya, and Turkey, and specializing in medicine, the social sciences, and other disciplines are scattered throughout Eritrea’s educational institutions.

Recently, the Russian Federation has also renewed and expanded its educational partnership with Eritrea. In fact, during the armed struggle, Eritreans were enrolled in Russian universities, with many joining the Front after the completion of their studies.

Talks were held in June 2014 between H.E. Mr. Osman Saleh and H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov, each the Minister of Foreign Affairs for their respective countries. Discussions explored the possibility of enhancing

Eritrean Students Embarking to Russia

bilateral ties, including partnerships in the area of education. Following the meeting, both countries came to an agreement in 2015, and five Eritrean students had the opportunity to pursue higher education in Russian universities on government scholarships.

This year, the partnership is deepening, with the number of scholarships increasing. On 13 October, an official ceremony was held upon the premises of the Russian Embassy in Asmara to congratulate the 25 recipients of Russian scholarships. Minister of Education, H.E. Semere Russom, and the Executive Director of the

National Commission for Higher Education, Professor Tadesse Mehari, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, former students of Russian universities, and prospective students took part in the ceremony. The Russian Ambassador, Azim Yarakhmedov, opened the ceremony by welcoming all participants and congratulated the students in winning these scholarships. He explained that it is not something new for Eritreans to study in Russia, as many were already enrolled at the time of the armed struggle. He also stressed how students’ fulfillment of their studies would be a great contribution

to the needs of Eritrea, and he concluded by offering words of encouragement.

The event continued with remarks by Eritrea’s Minister of Education, Semere Russom, who expressed his gratitude towards the Russian Federation for the educational partnership. He highlighted the re-emergence of the relations between the two countries and its reflection in the deepening educational ties. “This is a huge investment in each one of you, but this also illustrates a collective responsibility you carry for your country,” the Minister expressed to the students. The speeches continued with

Professor Tadesse Mehari, who offered advice to the students, as well as explaining the important investment made by the Government of Eritrea in terms of financial support for student studying in Russia. “The country and the people are investing in you,” he added.

Further, former student during the Soviet Union, between 1969 to 1975, Ambassador Negassi Sengal, Director General of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed his encouragement by enhancing the positive experience he had: “Russia is a country of sciences, culture and technology”, he said. Professor Zemenfes Tsige, Director of the Bureau of the International Linkage at the National Commission for Higher Education, also shared his deep appreciation and gratitude towards the Russian Federation and outlined his hope that the number of scholarships offered to Eritrean students would increase in the near future. He also extended encouragement toward students, pointing out that he expected they would “graduate with flying colors.” Professor Zemenfes also added that the educational partnership between the two countries would aim to create a culture of academic diversity for future generations.

Members of the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities in Eritrea were also part of the ceremony. Members of the Association, which boasts a membership of 200 graduates, asserted their willingness to assist students embarking upon their new educational journey.

The ceremony came to an end with the handovers of visas to all prospective students, who will study in a number of disciplines, including geology, neurosurgery, physics and astronomy, agro-engineering, and medicine, at both the MA and PhD levels. This educational partnership with the Russian Federation is surely a step ahead in the relations between the two countries, as well as a vital investment made by the Government of Eritrea towards educational progress and development.

Across the world, the north, central or even south, the inhabitants of this earth search for a better place to settle, and that is for a known reason, their health. Either they find a better place or they move on to find one, to simply save themselves. People are normally cautious when something unusual happens to them, the wise ones regularly adjust with precautions and others react quickly at times they feel unaccustomed with their health.

We all value and give credit to our health after we actually encounter and test a sickness. The health status gets higher when patients slowly heal their conditions and change their life styles, get regular checkups not when they feel something wrong but when they develop a habit of visiting health center just like the habit for religious places. Nonetheless, all of these depend on the society’s ways of living and their environment, but also it is not an issue to be dealt and left ambiguously because in the end, we can’t enjoy our life without a complete health condition since it is the basis of our survival.

The more people inhibit an area, the more health facilities are mandatory. Africa being a continent of mass population

NRS: Easy Mode to Public Health

where people are distributed and scattered, the demand of health facilities is a growing phenomenon for centuries. Thanks to the workaholic Governments and concerned outside partners, it is gradually building its necessities and providing health services for years. Newly born countries like Eritrea, despite the struggle for their independence until the late 90’s, have successfully gained their quick infrastructural and distributional assignments of Health Avenue through their determined and forward looking agendas and policies. And by now many parts of the nation are

proudly furnished with well-built health stations with sufficient staff and equipment to deliver services to communities.

To mention some, the Northern Red Sea region has registered a praiseworthy outcome where according to reports; above 74% of the population inside 10km area is getting adequate health service. The region had only three hospitals and two health centers before the independence; currently the number has increased into 41 health institutions, among which nine are hospitals, nine health centers and twenty three health

Gindae Referral Hospital

stations. The Northern Red Sea is a long stretched region where the distribution of people is uneven and widely spread throughout the small and big towns. Health stations of Karora, Embatkala, and Erafaile are among the recently built ones.

People residing in remote area of the region have the relief of getting health service currently in towns such as Adobha, Kamchwa, Nakfa, Endlal, Dahlak Islands, and others are already provided with new actively working Ambulances. This indicates the region is efficiently managing health transportation which concludes a huge effect on decreasing maternity death as is helpful for referral system.

Furthermore, the Hospitals in the region readily are providing health services with modern equipment. Medical equipment for blood chemistry of cholesterol, liver function and heart case diagnosis or Ultrasonography, EKG, Ultrasounds as well as the new gene expert diagnosis for the multi-drug resistant Tuberculosis (TB) is introduced in Gindae and Massawa Hospitals respectively.

In general, all of these developments are believed to be helpful for diagnosis amenities and will promisingly aid in control of diseases and help the people of the region to get an instant service instead of moving to other regions. People in overall

and specifically pregnant women get used to frequent health center and hospital visits for checkups. The hospital in Nakfa is accepting more pregnant women than before and providing a one month Maternal Waiting Room opportunity for those who can’t bear their pregnancy whom live in remote areas and can’t get access to quick transportations.

This practically will reduce the maternity death rate in the region. In the sub zone of Nakfa there was about 10.8% prevalence (which is the number of occurrences of a disease to the number of units at risk in the population) as the reports indicate but now Ministry of Health of the region is telling this number has reduced into 2.8% due to Mass Drug Administration Campaign of 2010 and 2011 in which every door was knocked to distribute vaccinations for prevention.

More or less, much has been performed by the Ministry of Health and Administration of the region to aid the surrounding population as the outcomes tell by themselves. Investments for health is a priority the government is pertaining the significance for the people who build the nation later. Settling more, it is building health institutions in various parts of the nation for people to get the paramount health services, since there is no place better than staying at home and taking care of your business.

The act of bestowing gifts as a sign of appreciation, love and good wishes, has a primordial essence. Human beings, and animals as well, have developed the habit to make the notion of sharing and giving as natural as possible.

Here in Eritrea, equally and extraordinarily for most of the times, we love to exchange with all means we have. After all, we are renowned, especially Eritrean women, for generosity and the typical sincere reception to guests.

Traditionally, people don’t visit friends empty handed, rather, tag along snacks, roasted cereals and a fruits of all sorts while paying visits, in return the host, graces the visitor with tea or coffee, topped up by the ‘brought’ snacks.

In the long run, and referring to the Italian colony introduction of the modern bakery, bestowing cakes as a token of appreciation has set to be not only a trend but will be a convention.

In Asmara, down town, the commonly called ‘Ketema’ area, has a number of pastries. In fact, 80% of the ‘Ketema’ businesses are, according to my shabby statistics: pastries, bakeries, cafés and snack bars that include a variety of wow cakes in their menus.

Bar Vittoria is known for early morning services, so much so, that for more than four decades it has become a must visit place for many employees in their home-to-work morning route. Bar Royal, Asmara Sweet Café, Damera, Dolce Vita, Moderna, Pyramid

Sugar? Yes, please!and a whole long list of other cafés, and also, pastry houses such as: Giardino, Gebretinsae Bakery, Asmara Pastry, Zemenawi and more time-withstanding heritages, grace Asmara with an ocean of dolce variety.

Let me give you an insight to the locals’ preferences. When people go out for a cup of coffee, as we globally say, it is common to accompany it by munch of cakes.

Looking for a combination of a long lasting after-taste in your mouth? …Here is the local theory. The recipe to this simple plate is simple indeed: if one is drinking something sweet, tea for instance, we normally get pizza, creamed or non-creamed brioche, English-cake, muffin or something crunchy, hence, biscuits.

Whereas, when the cake is creamed, so: Black forest, Mocca, Miglie-foglie alla crema Bianca or Al ciocollato, Pies, Cestino,

Cheese cakes, Donuts , and so on, make sure to go for cappuccino, macchiato or coffee with a sprinkle of ginger. That’s how it is done!

People, like I said before, choose

to buy cakes from Asmara’s prodigious pastry houses and cafés as they kindly enough receive orders for ‘take-away’.

“I am the happiest person when I wake up at 3 in the morning, every day to bake and throughout the day; watch our customers enjoying our pastries. I am never tired!” says Finan Emaha, a young man (23), son and baker of Bar

Vittoria!

There is no rule or a specific dictation over what to take on what occasion; baptism, graduation, honeymoon, an ordinary tea party or a traditional coffee ceremony (less on funerals). It all depends on the custumer’s wish.

Normally, it is easier to get a whole cake or ‘torta’ as we call it, but a variety of pastries is a common and mouth-watering choice. No problem whatsoever, as long as the kids are happy! They even have their very own way of calling the cakes. Say a loaf of pastry is topped by pink, strawberry-ish cream, then they call it ‘melhas’; the Tigrigna word for tongue! Perhaps it is because, the closest pink thing they perceive regularly, is their little pink tongue. Hilarious!

Yes, yes, okay… guilty as

charged! We have nine entirely different cuisines for each ethnic group, save for, a communal sweet tooth!

However, there is a paradox; many think that Eritreans inherited

their sweet tooth, their keenness towards pastry and the beautiful tradition of sharing pastry as a token from the Italians. However that is not entirely true.

It is actually a tradition of centuries. Have you ever heard of Himbasha? Bet you did. Himabasha is seemingly a big round, soft, very supple, bread but when our mothers put dried grapes in the mix of the yeast, is something else. Yum!

Back in the days, shepherds of pastoral communities used to enjoy their fast-bakery. It’s called Burkuta. What they did was practically make a yeast out of sweet grains such as corn and maize and a bit of wheat for consistency, mix it all together and cover it on top of a round burning stone, then they put it to bake, with little fire at low heat, for a long time out in the woods. When

it’s finally ready, they serve it to each other, with fresh milk! There was also a time, less now, when Guagu’ba was common: a steamed sugary bun that requires hours for the making.

And thank Heavens Hanza is still surviving in the era of instant foods! What is Hanza? Hanza is still a sweet bun but marvelously soft; so much so, it melts in the mouth before you even realize it. What makes Hanza special, is that it’s covered with sweet spices, cinnamon for instance.

Moreover, we all crave for the pastries coming out of other cuisines such as the influence from Middle-Eastern countries. Honestly, the reason of why non followers anxiously await Muslim Holy Months and run after Muslim friends, and also a big reason of why Muslim friends are incredibly busy serving food to non-followers friends and families during Islamic Holy months are: Meklil, Taamiya, Sambussa or Dates!

So, all in all, our cravings for pastries have existed for as long as our tradition goes back. I am not denying the Italian influence –no I do dare not– which it, surely did modernize and enhance, the beautiful cultural harmony we witness coexisting in Eritrea’s pastry houses and nowadays bakery tradition.

One of my recommendation for tourists visiting Eritrea or anybody new to Eritrean culture; is to NOT go back without trying local pastry, and also to be part of our super addictive sweet tooth!

Mai Werki, a private firm for distributing honey and dairy products, was established in 2008. Underpinned by and synchronized with priorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2009, the home business started excelling its endeavors to a wide span.

In that year, various farmers got an opportunity to provide their products in organized manner and Mai-Werki was the main forefront in working appropriately for equating honey demand and supply in the country.

As part of the government policy for emboldening effective and public-centered businesses, the Ministry of Agriculture continued creating a suitable ground for Mai-Werki to display its agricultural profiles in the National Festival. Resulting in unreserved public comment for excelling its products, Mai Werki took an initiative to reconsider its labor-intensive and manual-based working models. Under the auspice of the Ministry of Agriculture, technicians and experts on apiary products continued exerting their encouraging support when needed.

Derived from this, since 2015, Mai Werki installed a new machine; partial problems were resolved. The Ministry of Agriculture also remained conscious to collaborate with managers of the business for addressing such issues responsively. Even though the machine role in analyzing water contents and other ingredients of honeys has been significant, the efforts for standardizing the products in their qualified range were the main task for the owners of Mai-Werki and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Mai-Werki: Relentless Efforts for Excelling Apiary Activities

Including the 70 farmers who are working tremendously for supplying qualified honey products, Mai-Werki is not only engaging in maximizing its interests; by the same coin, it offer various professional and other apiary-activity centered workshops to the regular honey suppliers’ farmers and other customers. The concerned body in the Ministry of Agriculture continued reassessing activities of Mai-Werki for ensuring that the business home is running in the way that would meet expectations of the public.

Here to accomplish its social responsibility, Mai Werki started distributing its products to customers, organized workers from different private and governmental institutions. In the central region alone, there are 75 institutions which are profiting from such agricultural products. That in itself has added motivating stamina to the statue of Mai-Werki responsibility and undeniably, it is bolding the results of professional engagements of the Ministry of Agriculture in inspiring industrious farmers and agricultural cooperatives.

As basic classical economists’ stance, equating quality of products and their selling prices are determinant in shaping landscapes of clients’ satisfaction. To avoid unnecessary burdens, Mai-Werki and the aforementioned different institutions agreed to help customers to pay on monthly basis and at equal installment plan. In fact, this has motivated many employees from different companies to benefit from such opportunity. Even employees who are not organized under any worker

umbrellas have the same rights also. And the selling price for one kilo of honey was 400 Nakfa; thanks for the policies that were reinforced in the fall of last year for the redemption of the Nakfa currency, now, the selling price is 300 Nakfa.

Intended for not being confined only within the country, Mai-Werki also got an opportunity from the concerned governmental bodies to export honey products; resultantly, limited portions of productions—as a sample and to armor pre-assessment researches of the cooperative business—64 quintals of honey were exported to Yemen in 2008, and to delve competitively in the arena, the exportation activity continued by sending 80 quintals to Dubai in 2009. Archives of the farmers-centered but privately owned cooperative witnesses remarkable solid foundations for Eritrea to consolidate its strength thereby to augment honey products and undoubtedly, the Ministry of Agriculture is certain of such rewards.

As stated earlier, to excel standards of the products, Mai-Werki--supported by the government policies that emboldens public-centered individuals’ activities—an enthusiastic young, Mr. Ibrahim Salih—to various states, including Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Taiwan and India. The aim was in fact for fostering Mai-Werki’s apiary experiences by getting experimental knowledge from different countries apiary-

centered activities. After the work tour, Mai-Werki became glued to the idea of establishing honey packaging factory in Eritrea.

Working models of Matuka Honey Packaging Machines of Taiwan and Sterling Engineers and Boiling from India especially attracted the eyes of Mai-Werki’s managing body. And pre-assessment researches that were held in the stated countries gave an affirmative authentication that there are not any impediment to establish honey packaging factory in Eritrea. To profit from professional involvement of the concerned body, the Managing Director of Mai-Werki presented a research proposal for creating work links with the two companies.

Ministry of Agriculture showed unreserved commitments and set up an advisory committee that have to deal with both pros and cons of such endeavors. After in-depth researches and multi-penetrating outlooks on cleared work guidelines and functional technical applications held by the concerned experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Mai-Werki agreed on the similar but scientifically and professionally architected findings.

At last, to tune the activities of the largest macro-national development policy, Mai-Werki presented a bid dossier to Matuka Honey Packaging Machines of Taiwan and India’s Sterling Engineers and

Boiling. After critical assessment, the firm from India is selected for multifold advantageous reasons. An agreement for the company—Sterling Engineers and Boiling-- to establish honey-packaging factory in Eritrea was signed in December 2015. The company also agreed to carry the activity responsibly and has started arming itself with vital means for installing a purposeful job.

In conclusion, Mai-Werki expressed its candid gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture. “The Ministry is not only supporting us in providing various accessories for carrying-out apiary products at high quality, additionally, the Ministry has allowed us to use its up to date laboratory; and undeniably, we are using this lab—which is established in Villagio-Genio in affirming the standards of our products.”

“Highly educated by such efforts, therefore, Mai werki is working relentlessly to pay off the government by answering the right questions of the public regarding this center. Of course, after establishing the honey packaging factory, we are going to chase after every beehive in the country and we will confirm it is channeled for every home at fair price.”

Halhale College of Business and Economics

The College of Halhale is about 35km South from Asmara, we offer degree and diploma programs. My department is the department of banking and finance, we work to ensure that, out of that department come out competent students that can work in different financial sectors of the country: banks, ministries, institutions.

Passion for the field of finance

I am enthusiastic! I am really passionate about my department and especially the field because unlike how people commonly think of it; the field of finance is massive and dynamic. In Eritrea, there is a conviction: people think of finance as a job of cashiers. And if I may, I would really want to use this opportunity to declare that the common understanding is wrong. Finance in itself is bigger than that and has infinite scopes and branches in it. Say project appraisal, for example, or financial markets, financial institutions inside institutions, depository and non-depository institutions.

What is that you do exactly?

Hey… I just cannot be specific. In few words, what financiers do is advice on how to raise money and where to invest.

New academic year

Currently we have received students who just completed their freshman year in CASS (College of Arts and Social Sciences in Adi Keih). And those who choose the business area: meaning Finance, Banking, Accounting, Business Management, Economics, or Public Administration.

Things you appreciate most

What I admire the most… I have passion in lecturing; I

Finance means QuestBillion Temesghen

To honor the beginning of the new academic year, and on the way, to wish good luck to Eritrean students; Eritrea Profile’s Q&A has been hosting scholars. This time we have invited a young and passionate teacher, lecturer and, at only 32, head of the department of banking and finance at the Halhale College of Business and Economics.

To his students, he constantly recommend a CNN SHOW … avid fan of Richard Quest, we give you: Henok Nigusse.

have passion in transferring my knowledge to others. What I know might not be as big but, I love it when I am transferring what I know, to people who are ready to receive and utilize what I give. That is what I appreciate the most.

Because I do remember, the lectures I attended when I was in college, literally contributed to the way my former college mates and I, am at the moment.

Although as a teacher and a lecturer, I come across a wide range of students, I try to accommodate everyone; weak or not. As you teach you are building human minds by accessing in the students’ brain, and the students, one way or another, they will never forget you. Input sustainability is critical for the students’ satisfactory outcome. So you have to be careful as to what you are feeding the students with by pre-assessing what is expected from them. Do not be selfish but give time to think on how they can accommodate their dreams through studying. At their age, everybody has a dream.

That is a great way to put things, but do you actually think, your colleagues are doing as fine as your statement?

The way I see it, yes, very much so. Trying to make students search for themselves by giving them assignments that will eventually push them into logging in the internet and see how big corporations of the world function, is actually a great technique. Moreover, making them aware of how big the field is and how massively it is influencing every minute and aspect of the world is also another effective method.

We strive to make our students alert at all times; a student should always be under, not distress, but stress. Of course we have shortages, but we’re always

pouring our best in class. We want our students to be of lasting impact one day; for themselves, for their families, the community and the country as a whole.

These students that you are talking about, how great are they?

I believe that our students are great. For starters, one needs high marks to get in the school, therefore, our students are of great quality. There are some exceptional that literally grab every word I say, and make my job enjoyable. I still keep in touch with students that graduated and are doing well in ventures of their own.

Universal thumb role

... When I meet my students down town, they tell me about their amazing job in advising businesses while some lead their own business. They contribute in downsizing thumb role, and it makes me happy. Some of them, many of them actually, I know they will have an astonishing future.

It’s old, the rule of doing business randomly, without having any know-hows, without considering pros and cons of certain investments, although it was a good mechanism in the old days but not anymore. If you do not know how to do business, but have the money for it, then you should have people that can advise you and direct you towards success.

So is thumb role good or bad? I am not a business student.

You don’t have to have basic knowledge about it. But thumb role, I believe it’s good. Especially in Eritrea it’s kind of feet for boosting the mechanism for small business.

Department head

When I came back to Eritrea after getting my Master in 2013, I was only 29, which is when I actually became department head. Before that, for many years I did work as a Graduate Assistant.

In any case, young or old, when and if you are to do something you might as well do it passionately because you are going to do it anyways. If you don’t think you’re going to like a profession then don’t even bother starting it. Why play with people’s mind and time? And most importantly your time as well!

Hard work pays off only under one single condition: and that is passion. If you are passionate and devoted, sooner or later, growth and success will inevitably come your way.

Every day I am surprised I am a department head, being in charge of all my students in my department, freshman to senior students, it is a big responsibility and a great challenge that I love.

But what I really need to tell you is that, it is more like of a teamwork: me, my colleagues and the students.

Advice for students

First and foremost, I wish them a fruitful academic year. I truly wish for them to succeed.

And I strongly advice students

to make plans; for every profit one expects there is a needed amount of investment and risk. While a student thinks like a student; your status and your job is to be a student. Have a concrete plan and try to implement it, if you are facing problems in implementing your plan, then identify the problems and look for better ways.

Studying is good so it should be befitting, it should also be entertaining. So if students are good in time management then they can exceed in their studies and enjoy time as a young individuls.

Please... avoid procrastination don’t be ‘eleventh-hourists’. Try to study and do things from the get go. Don’t wait for the last minute.

“Dear Future Finance Giants… “(Laughs) … Dear future finance giants, to all of my students; have integrity in yourself as future economists. Respect the field. Don’t waste your time. No way! THE ARCHENEMY OF BEST IS GOOD. You should never be good enough, hate good, aim and love best, don’t be just good enough, hate good aim for best.

We need you, the country needs you!

Thanks a lot Henok!
