MTB Gravity – Enduro / All-Mountain / Downhill

Ergonomics and Gravity? Contradictory as it may sound at first glance, it makes 100% sense. In downhill oriented disciplines it is not traditionally about attaining comfort but about being able to safely and quickly maneuver the bike through technically challenging trails.

Fitting Box Comfort

Fitting Box MTB Expert

Added comfort, added performance, and a happier ride – your bike only travels as good as it can adapt to your body: The Three Contact Points – Saddle, Handlebars and Pedals, must be adjusted in distance, height and angle relative to your body – it also de-pends on the type of bike and riding style.

With the Fitting Box you can adjust your bike easily, quickly, accurately and ergonomically correct without prior fitting knowledge.

Performance Comfort – Fitness

NEW SFC3 SeriesPressure-free sitting comfort! Ergon expands the saddle range for a larger new target group of fitness bikes, Ebikes or sportive touring bikes. The saddles provide effective relief of the perineum and genital area. Numbness is reduced and riding comfort enhanced. The position of the relief channel was optimized with the help of many test riders by means of the latest pressure measure-ment technology. The soft borders of the seating surface prevent increased edge pressure. A large seating surface effectively reduces pressure peaks and perfectly distributes the pressure on the sitting bones and pubic bones – even without cycling shorts. A flat seating surface for dynamic sitting in a variety of positions without tilt effects – as opposed to step saddles – perfectly meets the requirements of a fitness rider.

Saddle shown: SFC3 Evo Gel*

Nylon-Composite Saddle ShellUnlike Ergon, most manufacturers use polypropylene shells with lower support strength.

Downhill – It is always about controll

Tahnée SeagraveDownhill Worldcup Pro Athlete

The rider and the material explore the limits in downhill. The contact points, saddle and grip, deliver the necessary feedback and are in direct contact between rider, bike and ground. The best possible control is crucial in extreme situations.

During the development period, the experience of many factory riders con-tributed to the SMD2 saddle and GD1 Factory grip series. The expertise of 3-times downhill world champion Fab Barel had an especially great impact. The close collaboration with top athlete Tahnée Seagrave provided important knowledge directly from the world cup that was taken into account in the development – maximum speed requires maximum control.

Fabien Barel 3x Downhill World Champion

“To me control means, beeing in control with my bike and my body as well as my mind. Control is especially important when it comes to downhill. It’s quite obvious, if you lose control, your body loses control of the bike. So it’s very important to be able to lead your bike where you want to go. I would say, there is a fine balance in doing too much of it.”

“Control means to me to have the possibility to completely understand the feedback from the ground – through my hands, legs and the bike – I receive all the information. To have everything under control means to feel everything happening underneath me. I understand the ground and I find my lines.”

SMD2 – The Downhill SaddleDuring an intensive development period the requirements of the SMD2 were framed with the help of downhill professionals: The first saddle of Ergon which is barely used for sitting, but instead to steer the bike. The entire surface design follows a tilted orientation of the saddle and offers the rider complete freedom of movement. The guidance of the bike with the inner leg is improved by circumferential padding of the edges. Other important downhill features are shock-resistant rails and extra large tire clearance at the rear during deflection of the rear end.

The SMD2 is ridden in the Downhill World Cup.

Fabien Barel

“My first impression of the SMD2 prototype concerned the dimension. Exactly the right length, especially at the saddle nose for better control plus the grip and the stability of the rear surface. I could move freely, but had lateral contact with the inner leg when necessary. These were definitely the key facts for me.”

SMD2 Series

MTB Gravity – Downhill

The entry-level model of the new SMD2 series. All features support the motion sequence for downhill. Adjusted to a tilted saddle position. 360° padding for an improved leg placement and stable CroMo-Rails. The tire recess allows for a 1.5 cm lower mounting of the saddle.

Color up Your Ride! The SMD2 Comp comes with stable CroMo-Rails and in three different color concepts: blue, red and stealth. The saddle shell consists of a carbon composite. The saddle offers perfect grip due to the anti-slip seating surface.

Lightweight design without levity! Because of the high level of impact stress in downhill we made a conscious decision against carbon and choose solid titanium. Higher resistance to damage but still lightweight. Nobel, functional and light.

SMD2 CompSMD2

One Size Fits All The saddle is rarely used for sitting in Downhill. It serves in the handling of the bike for pedaling, as well as in the air. The SMD2 was developed precisely to meet these needs, which directly results in no need for different saddle widths.

The CF3 Pro Carbon Setback system has two-parallel leaf springs and a floating head. Thanks to the principal design, the shock-impact forces and direction of compression work together simultaneously. The VCLS leaf springs are made of Carbon Fiber Composite, and provide a defined flex. Setback system provides 25 mm of setback (reduced to 13 mm by flipping the FlipHead).

Highly sensitive meanwhile retaining that ‘direct’ road bike feel.

Floating pivot Flip Head prevents the saddle angle from changing, as the post compresses.

Flip Head can rotate for increased adjustment allowing for a more forward or backward position.

VCLS Carbon Fiber Composite flat springs for defined flex.

At the heart of the seatpost are two parallel carbon flat springs. The seatpost head has two bearings; thus allowing it to stay parallel to the ground through the travel motion. The function is very simple, when you hit a bump the bike propels the bike upwards, the seat- post then flexes in the opposite direction (refer to image) allowing he bump to neutralize. This is more efficient than a traditional suspension post. The post keeps that ‘direct’ road bike feel, but the VCLS flat springs are sensitive to small variations in the road surface.

A genuine comfort revolution, lightweight and maintenance-free.

The hands bolster a large part of the upper body weight onto the handlebars. Thus there is constant and high pressure onto a small area causing nerves to be irritated. To make matters worse, many cyclists bend their wrists too much. The result is sensory loss, tingling, numbness or abnormal sensations in the little finger and ring finger. In extreme cases, even the grasping function of all fingers is limited.

Hand pressure must be distributed on a wider scale. Through a larger contact area of the grip, the forces are distributed better and the nerves are not irritated. A rider who has these problems should opt for an ergonomic wing grip. Through the use of a screw clamp, Ergon grips can be fixed to a custom and individual angle on the handlebar. The result, the wrist is actively prevented from kinking of falling downward.

34 WWW.ERGONBIKE.COM

Performance Comfort

The Advantages of Ergon Grips.

The wing grip enlarges the contact area of the hand. The pressure is distributed over a larger area, relieving the ulnar nerve and increasing comfort.

Through the wing construction, the hand is supported and the wrist is automatically put in an ergonomically ideal position.

Strong pressure points lead to kinking off the Ulnar nerves. This can lead to numbness or impaired mobility.

Longer rides with increasing fatigue complicate the ergonomically correct position of the hand and cause a bent wrist.

Ulnar nerve irritation

In the area of the little finger, the ulnar nerve runs close below the skin surface, leaving the nerve very exposed against pressure loads.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

With the bending of the wrist, nerves, tendons, and blood vessels are compressed. Consequently, the carpal tunnel can narrow and damage the median nerve.

All grips of the Ergon product line are suited for the use with e-bikes or E-MTBs.

Grip Compound – Made in Germany.Ergon’s Product Development Team doesn’t only focus on Ergonomics, they focus on materials research and long-term testing. The requirements and testing standards of our products meet the testing levels of the automotive industry, and exceeds the cycling industry standard. Ergonomics, Product Design and Engineering are done internally at our German Headquarters, where many successful projects have been born, for instance our BioKork grip sustainability initiative ‘GreenLab’.

Environmental toxins can be easily absorbed through sweaty hands, so Ergon has developed and tested in recent years more than 50 different compounds. The material – Made in Germany – meets the highest purity standards and is durable. This is a worldwide exclusive compound to Ergon unique in the cycling industry.

Features• Ergon special compound globally exclusive, developed and manufactured in

Germany• Latex-Free, PAG-Free, contains No-Fillers• Extremely High UV Resistance• Contaminant Free – only medically approved ‘White Oil’ are used in production• All the used raw materials comply with strict purity criteria of the EU regulations• Raw materials are appropriate for toys according to European Directives for Toys• Free of lead, mercury, cadmium,

hexavalent chromium, PBBs and PBDEs

Since hand sizes vary from person to person, sometimes consider-ably, the GP and GS series grips are offered in two standard sizes, Small and Large.

These sizes refer to the gripping circumference, the large hand size has a thicker grip, and the smaller hand a thinner grip, for better closure around the grip surface. These differences have a direct impact on the overall handling of the bike.

The GC1 grip was developed for the ergonomic demand of riders with back-wards-swept handlebars, normally found on city bikes. Using traditional grips on these types of bikes causes a kink in the wrist. The GC1 corrects this wrist position through its anatomical and ergonomically correct form, reducing aches and tension. The GC1 is developed in Germany, made from certified toxin-free UV-stable rubber compounds. Specially positioned textures and different com-pound hardness ensuring maximum comfort, and secure grip.

MTB Gravity

The first MTB Gravity Grip with tapered grip shape (patent pend.). More damping in the outer area with slim inner diameter. The unique rubber compound manufactured in Germany offers adhesive and rebound properties which have never been seen before. The grip feeling is soft, but still very defined and precise. The surface profile provides optimal grip and reduces the gripping force at the same time. The slim inner stop additionally improves fast positioning of the hand. The high-strength aluminum inner clamp keeps the grip torsion-proof even for carbon handlebars.

Available in two different diameters, standard and slim. Suitable for different hand sizes or the preference for slim grips or more damping – in translucent frozen orange or frozen black.

The GD1 factory is used in the Downhill World Cup.

GE1 / GE1 SlimAt the top of the Enduro and Gravity community! The first ergonomic, rider orien-tated grip for wide riser bars. Supporting the ‘elbows out’ hand / arm position popular in downhill riding. – The GE1 tilts the grip area 8%, placing the elbows in the correct position automatically.

“Voila” as Fab Barel would say, who aided in the development of this product. Forged aluminum inboard clamp, with fully integrated ‘end plug’ which is part of the internal core (Patent Pending) – This internal core allows the grip edge to be soft for damping vibrations, so the hand can be placed correctly at the end of the bars. Therefore, the pressure-sensitive ulnar nerve on the outer hand is protected. Compatible with carbon handlebars.

The GE1 Slim has a slimmer construction as the GE1, designed for those who prefer a slimmer grip by for smaller hands or purely preference. The GE1 Slim grips offer a more ‘direct feel’ than the standard GE1.

Fitting Box

Added comfort, added performance, and a happier ride – your bike only travels as good as it can adapt to your body: The three contact points – saddle, handlebars and pedals, must be adjusted in distance, height and angle relative to your body – it also depends on the type of bike and riding style. With the Fitting Box you can adjust your bike easily, quickly, accurately and ergonomically correct without prior fitting knowledge. The Ergon step-by-step-technique was developed by Dr. Kim Tofaute, a leading expert for bicycle ergonomics in Europe.

Contents (Example Fitting Box Comfort)

Dr. Kim Alexander Tofaute is regarded as a pioneer of the sport-ergonomics industry in Germany. His knowledge and expertise come from 25 years of cycling experience. He holds a Ph.D. in sports science, and is one of a few sport ergono-mists in Europe with his credentials.

From 1998 to 2004 he worked as a research staff member and assistant profes-sor at the German Sport University in Cologne and acquired the A-Level Trainer license in cycling. Since 2005, Dr. Kim Tofaute has been the head of the Ergon Research and Development Department, and in 2011 he expanded his expertise and became CEO of his own Sport Ergonomics Consulting business. He is now intensively focusing his efforts on the subject of Bike Fitting.

Bike Fitting

The first tool offering Fast and Precise Cleat Installation. This cleat tool is a secret tip of pro-mechanics and bike-fit experts around the world. The force that powers your bike is transferred from the leg through the pedal, then the shoe, to the cleats. Ergonomics plays a major role in power transfer, without an ergonomic setup, power efficiency, performance and comfort will be com pro mised and injuries may result. Correctly installed cleats are distinguishable from the first ride. The Ergon TP1 allows the accurate adjustment of the three-axis which are important when installing cleats. The for-ward/backward position, the stance (QFactor), and the foot angle. This tool is simple, fast and effective.
