Delhi-based lecturer Su-san Thomas says the twosynonyms are connected. I

have a brainwasher for a col-league who would bombard hercrush with forwards everyday,so that he would remember hername. Her methods were a littleforward but mine were a littlemore oblique. In my blog I madevague references to a man I l ikedin the possibility he would readit. He did read it, but never com-mented, although my friendswere shocked and asked me toremove the particular posts.

Thanks for giving us this topic at the right time, asAmmu and Sandy will be celebrating their first loveanniversary on October 2.

September 2007 was the time when Ammu got

free access to browse and surf the Web during her officehours. Generally a persons first online crush happensthrough Facebook or Orkut but for Ammu it was Netlog. She had received many friend requests and two out ofthe many became her close friends. Out of that, this oneguy was very impressive. You know why?

First, Ammu shot a message to him, asking for a goodreason to accept him as a friend, to which he had a cutereply.

The next reason is that because his hometown is Sa-lem, which is Ammus favourite place in the wholeworld. The guy, Sandy, was in Trivandrum then, workingas a software professional, while Ammu was in Chennaiemployed in a software concern. Initially, they startedoff as friends and then they became best friends. It wasat this time she hesitated because anything further thanthis relationship was going to be a commitment. All shecould ponder on was, How will Sandy react if I told himhow I felt since we have known each other for not more

than 45 days. She did not want to make a snap decision, yet she decided to open up to him in the blind faith thathe would not step away from a commitment.

And on October 2, they celebrated the day they putaside their tantrums for love. It has been exactly a year. They still have their fights, but nothing serious, and fun-filled always. On this first anniversary, they decided toopen up to their parents about each other.

I wish them all success and dedicate this arti-cle to all those wonderful and lively couples outthere.

We had mentioned this weeks Big Story topic as Internet love. However, before that the topic had beenpublished as A crush you would like to forget. Since our contributors have been heart-warmingly honeswith the latter topic, we have decided to print the responses to both. Thanks again for keeping it real.

Ismiled at her. Before she could reciprocate,

her husband came out of nowhere in a nut-shell, this describes my feelings for a partic-

ular girl.It started in school and memories keep flashingas I pen this down. She and I had known eachother since kindergarten. The bond that we aschildren developed became weaker as we grewup, and she became conscious of how peoplespoke about us. No one in my class would call heran angel, save me. She had such a homely face, her little forehead almost hidden behind a hugebindhi. She was one of my strongest competitorsin studies. It was her, along with another girl whoconsistently gave me a run for the first rank. When she did beat me to the first rank, I did notmind as it gave me an opportunity to congratulateher.

There was never a dearth of cute girls in class, but I could never take my eyes of this particulargirl. When a teacher lifted his hand to beat me(any boy for that matter) she would close her eye

and make a ssss sound as if the blow had landedon her. Her handwriting was the most beautifuand she was talented, perhaps weaker than me in

Maths but generally good. Her voice was soft. Youcannot imagine such a girl scolding anyone. Infact she never did. She was silent, and my happiest moment was when she wished me all thebest for my Physics public exam. I got a centumand afterwards returned to my town. After gettingbusy with preparations for college, I lost track oher. A friend called me once to inform she wasmarried right after school. Her education was cuoff and she became the typical household villagewife. That was how I saw her when her husbandcame between us. She did not speak. As shecrossed me, she turned to me and smiled. Thathad never changed the warmth we shared sincechildhood. I still cherish that. But life went on andI had forgotten this, before Ergo broughtthis out - my first and lastcrushed crush.

    Snehnath S (name changed)

Ihad about three crushes during my school

days. All were very silly and interestingwhen I think about it. I keep wondering howI could have been so stupid. Although these

days, I can laugh it off, they are still memorableincidents in my life.

The worst crush was during my school dayswhen I was in standard 12. My story falls in thetimes I used to go for tuition classes. I liked aboy who was very calm and quiet but was notacademically inclined. Enthusiastically, I usedto look out for him, amongst 50 students. Iwould break out into a beaming smile whenev-er I saw him.

I still dont know what I saw in him. However, one of my close friends said she would get me

his phone number through her friend in theschool the guy studied in. When we did get hisnumber, we devised a game plan to approachthis guy. My friend then called him and narrat-ed a false story that even a small kid would nothave believed.

The story was that, my friend was being rag-ged by her friends to pick up a random numberand make conversation with whoever pickedup the call. She introduced herself as a studentdoing her B.Sc final year.

That guy also believed it and they both start-ed to talk on the phone often. They becamegood friends, and she even started introducedme to him, but I never had the guts to conversefreely. My friend started to talk a little moreabout me to him so that he would show someinterest. One fine day he woke up and under-stood the game both of us had been playing, which he would have guessed earlier if he hadbeen using his brain.

Then this guy managed to find out myfriends residential address using her phonenumber, which was disturbing to say the least.Thank god, all these conversations were tele-phonic. That was the last call made by myfriend to that guy. My friend and I never forgot

that incident. We were very frightened that hewould come to both of our houses and threatenus in front of our parents and tuition teachers.

Thank god he showed some mercy becauseafter that we stopped all our games. To explain,it had become a little ugly and made me feelindecent. I felt bad that I had both-ered a person who was not at allinterested in me. I hope I will nev-er see him during my life time.

Certain Web browsers includ-ing Apples Safari and Microsoftscoming Internet Explorer 8 havea private browsing feature that isintended to let you surf the In-ternet without leaving any evi-dence of your travels on thecomputer. Although it has al-ready been nicknamed porn

Typically, when this feature isturned on, visited Web pages arenot added to the browsers histo-ry file, text from auto filled forms

is not retained and keywords are

wiped from the menu in thebrowsers search box. Cookiesand passwords are erased as well.

    With Safari, you have to

    manually turn on the private

browsing mode under the Safarior Edit menu and click through a

were not far away.Nevertheless, I was dreaming

    about coming back, with my

own binoculars, and staying atthe nearby hotel so as to be ableto come out to the watch towersearly morning and again at sun-set.

Knowing what I now know ofSouth Indias sunrises and sun-sets, I am sure the sight of birdscoming in and out of the roost-ing places at the break and closeof day would be spectacular. Theplace is well looked after by twoforest officials and eight labour-ers from the nearby village.

The labourers earn a paltrysum of less than Rs. 50 per dayfor all the hard work they put up.

On the other side of the landof the birds the plain land was

The Vedanthangal bird sanc-tuary was an out-of-the-

world experience. A richland of 73 acres under the

Wildlife Board of Chennai. Iknew at once I was somewhere Ihad never been before and real-ised that a place so close to ametropolis could be so different.

With the dimming light of thesetting sun we saw across a shortexpanse of green water, smallclumps of grass and rows ofgreen trees. There were herons, grey blue with long pink legs, bunched together in some of thenearer trees, and flocks of white-

winged, long-necked storks inthe trees a little further. There

were also egrets, ibis and othervarieties of heron and storkturning the trees almost white

under the pure numbers of themin some places. Near the banksone could see small brown-backed paddy or pond herons.Fishing or standing very still and

watching for any faint move-ment. Standing on a concreteledge we spotted a smirking frog, head barely out of the water, notmoving at all, with one radiant

yellow eye in a brilliant greenhead gazing up another watch-er and waiter. We saw one birdof prey, a fish hawk of somekind, soaring through the sky,and small coveys of ducks dab-bling.

I had great trouble at first see-ing the birds even though they

divided into small moderatelyregular rectangles for paddy cul-tivation. I am told they can do

two harvests a year, so presum-ably the men I saw ploughingwere preparing a harvested pad-dy for a second crop.

Running across the grid ofsmall fields were the main irriga-tion ditches. Water was let in asneeded from the sanctuary side,

which, the labourers in the for-est explained, was made so richby the bird droppings that noother fertilizer is needed. Thefarmers, understanding this, have refrained from the usualpractice of killing birds, andhave actually promoted andsupported the sanctuary. Noth-ing like enlightened self-interest.

There was excitement in ourhouse and it was dominat-ed by Ankith, my five-year-old son, about our trip to

Singapore. We were welcomedat the airport by the beauty andcleanliness of the city.

We started our tour the nextmorning. Our first stop was theSingapore Flyer, which is thelargest observation wheel in the

world. This was followed byDuck Tour, an amphibious veh-icle used during World War II,

which is used on the river and

road. In fact, it is also the racetrack for first night F1 race.Post-lunch we proceeded to

Ankith was thrilled seeing theanimals this close. The day end-

tallest manmade waterfall) andan evening in China Town were

equally memorable. Our trip to Sentosa Island inthe cable car was thrilling 4DMagix, Luge Ride, Dolphin La-goon, Under Water World andthe magnificent Songs of theSea.

Ankith was thrilled and gotthe chance of his life to touchand take snaps with a dolphinand penguin. Later, we stopped

at Clark Quay to view the nightlife. Our last day in the city started

with a visit to the Singapore Sci-ence Centre, where the mostmemorable part was to see thespace and F1 exhibits. Our trip

    Whale of a time

    I

set out on my trip to Kerala with a lot of excite-ment and expectations, as I was looking forward

to the long weekend before Onam. Work hadtaken a good toil of me the past couple of weeksand this outing seemed just the perfectgetaway.

My first destination was Kumili, where we checked into CardamonCounty at night. It was Onam the nextday and we decided to start our holi-day on a religious note. So we skippedthe complimentary breakfast at the re-sort and headed to Mahadevan Shak-thra Temple in Changanur. It was atwo-and-half-hour drive from Kumili.

Quite content that we paid darshanat a temple in Kerala, we were antici-pating an authentic breakfast andlooked for roadside eat-outs. To ourdismay, all shops were closed for the

festival.Disappointed, we drove back to the resort late

noon, only to be greeted by waiters clad in dhotis. They served us the traditional sadhya in banana

leaf. After lunch we headed to the wildlife sanctuaryin Thekkadi. We rushed just in time for the lastboating tour for the day in the lake wa-ters which are surrounded by forest ar-ea. We were not lucky to catch theglimpse of many animals, only bisonand deer. We enjoyed the two-hourboat ride more for the pleasant weath-er and chill breeze which was a tem-porary relief from the sweltering

weather of Chennai. Not to mentionthe beauty of the greenery, sun set andstill waters, which was an absolutetreat to the eyes and in a way to theinner senses as well.

ll dreams come from your mind. To-day, much importance has been giv-en to dreams. In the West, especially

in the process of psychoanalysis,Freud and Jung gave too much impor-tance to dreams. In the East, the enlight-ened have always ignored dreams becausethey are just another outcome of the mad-ness that you call mind.

Your mind is just a garbage bin thatgathers things from people around you. This mind is of appropriate significance asa good survival tool. That is all. To survivein the world, you need this stuff, but interms of life itself, it is of no real signif-icance. Generally, most people live theirlives like in a dream and they even haveinvestments in their dreams.

All your dreams originate from yourmind. So it doesnt matter what kind ofdreams you have. Whether you see a godor you see a demon in your dream, it

doesnt matter. Whatever stuff is utmost in your con-sciousness reflects itself. Generally, 90 percent of dreams are just an expression ofunfulfilled desire. There are certain other

dreams that happen at a different levelthat could be intuitive. There could besome amount of intuitiveness in yourdreams.

    In dream states, accidentally some-

times, you can touch your subconsciousmind. When you touch your subconsciousmind, you transcend the limitations ofboth time and space. Time and space arecreations of your conscious mind.

When you transcend these, maybe youhave a dream like this: it is early in themorning and you just saw yourself sittingin a garden, your friend came and saidsomething to you, he just said something,

just an ordinary situation.Tomorrow morning you were sitting in

the garden and the same friend comes byand says the same thing to you - thingslike this happen. You dreamt somethingand then it happened.

These things happen simply because you have transcended the limitations oftime and space when you touch the sub-

conscious. It has got nothing to do with the deeper

dimensions of who you are. Do not attachtoo much importance to a dream. Stopdreaming and start living. It is time!

Are you all set to be seen as the

Yes. Bollywood is maturingnow wehave refreshing storylines as well as experi-ment-loving producers who are ready torisk new subjects with newcomers.

But can you deny that being AamirKhans nephew has made thingseasier for you?

Let me make an honest confession. Ifound my debut project myself. Abbas Ty-rewala, the director ofJaane Tu saw mein a party and we jelled well. But, for somereason, Sughand backed out. Aamir Khan

was looking for a good film to invest hismoney. He liked the script and producedthe film. But, of course, I will always re-main grateful to him for my break.

Did you always want to be a part ofBollywood?

I wanted to make my career in Bolly-wood, but not as an actor. I wanted to be afilmmaker. I am trained in script-writingand film direction from New York Film A-cademy. In fact, my family even said Aamir

was wasting his money on thefilm because Imran cantact.

There is a rumour thatafter Jaane Tu yoursigning amount has hikedto Rs. 7 crore, whichmakes you the highest-paid newcomer inBollywood. Is that true?

I dont know about thehighest paid newcomer tagbecause I dont have timefor a market survey. If so-meone is making a goodsmall-budget film, I willdefinitely ask for a smallamount.

It is also said that youwere not theproducers choice for

Beyonce Knowles new album wasdue at her label this week, but itlooks as if the 27-year-old rhythmand blues star wont make her

deadline to ensure a mid-November re-lease. Its not going to be completed,an inside source told the New York DailyNews. Shes got to get it out early in thefourth quarter, when theres so muchcompetition among artistes.

But Beyonce is not lazing around. Partof the delay is due to the large number ofprojects shes working on. She spentthree months filming Cadillac Records, where she plays gospel singer EttaJames, and is deep into the thriller Ob-sessed. Another delay stems from a duetwith Justin Timberlake recorded for thealbum. The two did not like the initialoutcome and kept reworking the songuntil they got it right, the paper said. Thefirst two single releases will be If I Werea Boy and Single Ladies.
