1. Definition of bullying in the workplace

Firstly, ask yourself:

Is what I am experiencing classified as bullying

behaviour?

Page 25: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Bullying in the workplace has several factors

Page 26: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Factor #1

1. Is what is happening to you repeated?

Are they repeatedly being nasty or have they repeatedly not included you?

Page 27: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Factor # 2

Is the behaviour unreasonable?

Page 28: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Unreasonable Behaviour relates to behaviour which you would find to be harassing, threatening or humiliating

Page 29: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Factor # 3 Bullying behaviour has to create a risk to health and safety

Page 30: Eradicate bullying in the workplace
Page 31: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Bullying is NOT

An isolated incident of someone being nasty to you or someone exploding every now and then

These are all unpleasant and unnecessary and need to be dealt with BUT they do not

constitute bullying

This is conflict!

Page 32: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Conflict When team members may get on each other’s nerves or have a disagreement occasionally.

This is natural to any workplace environment and conflict resolution may

be necessary!

Page 33: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Examples of on-going bullying behaviour:

If, for 3 times a week for two weeks in a row, you’ve

had a really hard time in your team and they’ve

excluded you from lunches, office conversations or meetings, then that IS

bullying.

Page 34: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

If someone swears at you repeatedly or insults you, that IS bullying

Page 35: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

If someone in your work environment deliberately withholds information from you that you need in order to

perform well, that IS bullying

Page 36: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

If someone demands unreasonable time frames from you or constantly

changes deadlines – then that IS bullying

Page 37: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Reminder – Bullying behaviour in the workplace must meet these 3 criteria:

• It’s got to be repeated behaviour

• It has to be unreasonable behaviour

• And thirdly it’s got to create a risk to health and safety

Page 38: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

Now is the time to do something about it!

1. Establish clear and transparent policies

that are readily available to all team

members and managers

Page 39: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

2. Educate all your team members about their responsibilities in maintaining a workplace that does not support bullying behaviour. MCI has many flexible solutions to support you in this information and education process

Page 40: Eradicate bullying in the workplace

3. Take steps to build a strong culture that enables positive behaviours from all team members

4. Build a culture of resilience where conflict is managed towards positive outcomes
