The sharp downward movement in long term rates came in as a surprise. However, after this sharp downward movement, the long term rates can potentially consolidate at these levels. The markets will now increasingly look at the incoming data (inflation and tax revenues) to take the next directional move. However, what may help the downwards movement in the domestic interest rate is the possibility of a continued global risk off trade, thereby creating flows towards risk off assets like US Gilts.
EQUITY MARKET OUTLOOK
FACTSHEETMARCH 2018
Midcap index has fallen by more than 10% in the last two months. Post this correction the midcap space of market has started to trade below 1+SD forward PE valuations. The probability of higher interest rate and a fear of trade war in developed market increases the propensity of volatility in flows towards emerging market, leading to higher volatility in markets. The Domestic Equity market is continuing to expect significant earnings pick up in next two years and the probability of that getting achieved is higher due to lower base effect (GST, Demon) and higher inflation (positive for earnings). In such scenarios generally market tends to reward companies who actually deliver earnings far ahead of expectation. So equities can be looked at stock specific and earnings specific. Net two months would be crucial for earnings in terms of FY18 full year numbers and the management commentary on the outlook they are seeing for the future
